The Coal Mines of Beckley, WV
"We go underground..."

So we figured that the location was Beckley, West Virginia from the zip code on the "Sold" box... and i just realized something. Doesn't West Virginia have coal mines?

Beckley, or Beckleyville, is known as the "Smokeless Coal Capital" for its unique history in coal mining. Two of the city's attractions include the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine (BECM) and the Youth Museum (YM).

The BECM offers tours by veteran Coal Miners that can take you 1500 feet below ground to see how it once was years ago.

I found the following exhibits at the YM interesting:
Puzzle Quest
Planetarium

While these two attractions are real, we may be able to get some info from the sites. After all, the last sentence of the newspaper message was "we go underground."

The fact that the zip code on the box in the pic was for Beckley WV does not necessarily connect to the newspaper printouts being from the same town or even the same decade.

True, but there is still a possibility they are related. More clues may tell.

There's a reason Becklley WV was highlighted and their coal mines are an important historic attraction.

Coal Miners and Red Hats

Apprentice coal miners are called "red hats" because they wear red hard hats. I don't know if there is any connection or not.

Howard Hickam wrote a novel called "Red Helmet" and and earlier novel called "Rocket Boys" which became a motion picture called "October Sky" an anagram of Rocket Boys.

He also was born and raised in Coalwood WV which is close to Beckley.
He went on to work for NASA in the space program prior to becoming an author.
