 		Breaking the rules is a huge faux pas; you are basically trying too hard and jumped the gun. Take some time, flesh things out, and think things over. PM people, hunt for emails, etc. and make some effort if you want your ARG to seem like an honest ARG. Announcing it here takes all vestiges of 'could this be real?' out of the experience and is probably what's making people disappointed.

A good way of thinking about it is this: The G stands for Game. What are the rules and how is it played.
