Ok, well, I'm thinking that with Elephant, maybe you move the lines in red, to the corresponding numbers. For example, you move the horizontal line of 1 to where five would go, and......... well, it gets confusing in english.

the titles have a lot of w's for those books. I'm wondering, if we take the first letters of the titles (omitting "the"s) we get

wwwezwifdbpmw (I believe)

which makes me think maybe (just maybe) we're getting a webpage?

(I know it doesn't fit the pattern, and I know I'm just hoping, cuz I see three "W"s in a row...)

A wrinkle in time: Meg Murray

The Moorchild: Moql

Out of the Dust: Billy Jo

Can't really read the others

Move the red numbered segments to the letter positions.
e.g. segment 1 goes to position 5
black segments don't move
