Two things...

First, from a game design perspective, the ZIP code on the box with 'sold' on it is like a finger pointing to the CL listing. Isn't that basically how the CL posting ended up being found?

Second, we used the hat to connect the pic on STIES to the CL post, and the CL post to find Josh. What we haven't exactly done is establish that the pic on STIES is actually created by Josh. It's possible that the pic on STIES is by whomever got the hat FROM Josh. We don't really have the whole dialog of STIES worked out after all. The 'sale' from CL may have been the cover to establish contact and communicate the shipping of the 8mm film, inside the hat.

Some had discussed that the photo in the STIES printout might actually be two photos seen overlapping, as if laying one print atop another (which may have accounted for the odd perspectives and size ratios).

Maybe the photos were items in the box of vintage stuff (why would a 70s-era turntable/tape be on a table in a pic he took in 2010?), so Josh took a pic of or scanned the photos, and sent it off for the 'verification' he sought?

hidden items in printout

I just saw that Josh updated his blog, and then checked the other sites. I printed the files from sties to Microsoft Office Document Imaging. In that program, you can have it recognize text.

There are 3 text boxes on the picture.

I converted everything to Word (has the ability), and I get two pictures. Both are the same. I also get some odd items. It says this:

Quote:
I think something may have reactivated. Need to make sure we're still alone. Keep it hidden until further contact.

[QUASI-TECHNO GLITCH TROUT]
qualifying troutiness pending outside verification of results

Oh man. This was brought up here on June 22:

http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=713562&search_id=325615607#713562

...and just added to the game-so-far summary so people wouldn't repeat old discoveries here only days ago:

http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=713562&search_id=325615607#713562

Enjoy your Omega-3 Trout award. Trout

EDIT: amending my Trout declaration if only to see if independent non-Word based results can be duplicated. If not, the "find" is just an app glitch and not a new STIES site update, and thus Omega-3 rich Trout.

That's just the OCR in MS Word. The character recognition software saw a cl instead of a d in the original image file. This happens sometimes when the original is blurry or not perfectly straight (like if you used a scanner on a document but the paper you scanned wasn't perfectly aligned in the scanner bed).

Please take back your trout (I think). I reprinted thinking the site was telling us to go back and look at sties since it was linked in the blog. I normally printed to paper, and saw the app to recognize text in the Office Document Imaging. It produced 3 hidden text blocks (and changed "damn" to "clamn".

There are 3 text boxes hidden on the picture. I believe they are the "F--", "-0;", and the "S". It also produces 2 pictures (instead of 1) when converted to Word.

Can you post the 2 pictures ?

and the comment linking back to the website is probably OOG just like all those other comments.

the 1=y substitution

I am just still questioning about this. If it was a programming mistake, wouldn't it be corrected by now (since the josh blog update). I find it strange that we can not try to access those files due to this substitution:

A5RSR1.WRK 5
CL03.WRK 2
DD09.WRK 2
GMRF71.TXT 4

Text recognition in Word is notoriously error prone, so don't trust that method at all. It's also not a standard thing available to everyone, as it's generated at YOUR end. This isn't how they would do such things for the viral. They want to be sure of what you get at your end.

I'd agree with Euchre on that. If others can reliably generate the same results you found via other methods outside of Word, then that would be a valid (if confusing, on their part) find.

true, I ran OCR some time ago and got different errors.

TIME?
New time code on STIES

A new timecode popped up on the site (unless, I missed it earlier, it was not there).
Seems to be yet another countdown!
http://www.scariestthingieversaw.com/time.php?time

But, its counting "up."

Any ideas (or, has anyone noticed this before?)

EDIT ... I found a mention of it through another ARG site on May 20, but the discussion was immediately dropped.

I wouldn't be surprised if that 'countup' was simply the cycle "backstage" at the site which started with the countdown earlier. It could simply be counting how many cycles have run since zero hour as an automated function.

I don't see how to access the .php page you linked from the main STIES game page, so I doubt it's part of the game — rather just server-side mechanics, that's my guess.
