[UPDATE] Dana's blog Sept 14

Just a little post to let you know that Dana changed the interface on her Blog page. She added a couple of new links...

She links here! That's cool!

And also weird. Smile I mean, we live in a world that has Halo, Bungie, the Halo novels, and...well, no Dana. Wink

Maybe such concepts are taboo to discuss without [META]stasization, but still... it's a little like if a character in a novel were to tell another character to email the author's fan club for more information about ... umm, life. Wink

A Warning, and some Solutions. [Too META?]

As most others did, I had assumed that the lou2.com site Dana had linked to last week for DarkForge's spreadsheet was an in-game site. It seemed logical that she would link to a site that was hosted by someone she knew to prevent DarkForge's Server from melting.

So on Tuesday, I naively informed her that the correct page was now comatas-coords and that she, or her friend lou could grab it and she could provide a link to the correct page.

I pointed her to DarkForge's page, and a page that I had set up to mirror it.

Yesterday, after a marathon of 12 axons in SF, I return home to get a PM from DF mentioning that I should update my page, because Dana was linking directly to it....

wtfpdqomgeep!?!?

This is a big file. 670 KB. And with a 30 GB/month limit, I was understandably concerned. I checked my usage, and I served over 300 MB in one day. Not bad, but it could get worse if slashdot got involved.

First things first. I updated the file. People need this info, and I will not fail them!

Second....reducing the bloat. Excel outputs html that is three times as big as the original spreadsheet file size. Most of this is due to overly long names for CSS elements and proprietary tags. I was able to reduce a lot of this with "Find and Replace" and HTMLTidy for windows.

This still left a file that was about 350 KB.

radicalbyte had suggested that I compress the file. I wanted to do that as a last resort, since it adds a couple of steps and the more steps, the less likely people will use the data. But he got me thinking....I recalled hearing about on-the-fly compression. Apparently some servers support gzip compression of pages and this works best for html.

The only problem is they have to be php. but if your server supports it, one line at the start of a php file will compress it.

So, a quick redirect, and I am now serving a 25 KB page per visitor.

Whew.

My usage is still under 400 MB today, thanks largely to this change.

The lesson is, be careful how you participate in an ARG! Conversely, have some damn content on your site that this kind of promotion can take advantage of!
