[Trailhead?] Avoncroft Stories and Artefacts Project
Dear Museum Enthusiasts...

At first glance, I don't quite know what this is, and since I'm at work I don't really have the time or resources to investigate it further. But the fact that their forum has a thread in it titled "What is an ARG?" leads me to believe it's... well... something.

Received this email today:

Subject: Avoncroft Stories and Artefacts Project - Launched!

Dear Museum Enthusiast,

Thanks for signing up to our notification list for the Avoncroft Stories and Artefacts Project. The exciting day has come now when we're launching the project!

The project has a forum where you can keep track of our progress, join in and have your say on the future of the project. You can find it at:

http://asaproject.proboards.com

We've got three new volunteers working with us for the ASA Project; you'll be able to meet Anna, Beatrice and Cathryn over on the forum. Do create yourself an account and have a read of what's going on at the moment. The project is all about providing a resource for you, our supporters, so make sure you join in the discussions about what's going on now and what's going on next.

Thanks for supporting the Museum, and we hope you enjoy the project!

Regards,

Sarah Butler

I don't know where they got me being a "Museum Enthusiast", considering I haven't been inside a museum in 20 years. And I certainly don't remember signing up for anything of this nature.

Avoncroft Museum is a legitimate museum. I'm not quite sure where the ARG really is, if it is out there. But, like I said, there is a "What is an ARG?" thread on the forum, so maybe there's a game to be played somewhere.

Anyway, just thought I'd pass the word along. Maybe someone else more diligent can find out what the heck this is.

Well yeah, but if there is a game I'm not seeing it.

Then again, I didn't look far.

This is what they say on the forum about ARG's

Quote:
You may have seen the phrase "alternate reality game" or the acronym ARG used to describe the Avoncroft Stories and Artefacts Project. You may be wondering what that means. Well, here's a brief explanation, or at least an attempt at one...

Alternate Reality Games are very hard to define, because although there are some common themes that run through most ARGS, you'll find once you start digging that there aren't really any hard and fast rules. There has been an awful lot written about what an Alternate Reality Game is, which is a good place to start.

The Wikipedia article for ARGs is particularly helpful if you're looking to understand what is going on.

This sort of interactive storytelling, where the 'players' can help shape the narrative, has lots of other names for it too. Transmedia... chaotic fiction... immersive gaming... the list goes on and on.

All you really need to know is this: this is a game, but a game with a difference. You can talk to the characters. You can even meet the characters. You are a character, and you will help shape how the game unfolds and, ultimately, how it ends.

Welcome to the ASA Project.

This is... umm, well, I'm not really sure what it is. I'm sure it's going to be at least a game somehow, but... yeah, not a clue what's going on. If what it promises in the OOG section comes to fruition then this should be interesting at least, so I hope it starts up ASAP. *rimshot*

I'm just gonna take a seat back here and watch this for a bit. *munches popcorn*

I agree, it's a real museum. I don't think it so weird they'd run an ARG, they have quite an extensive events calendar: http://www.avoncroft.org.uk/events.asp

edit: took a little looky loo, and i wonder if these photographs are going to turn up something.... creepy:

So, what is the ASA Project?

Well, three of us are volunteering our time this summer to Avoncroft Museum to help them document some of the buildings and their contents through the cunning use of photography. The idea is to build up by the end of the project a really comprehensive collection of images.

The reason we've got these forums is so that you can see what we're up to! Obviously we're not going to post everything that we take a photo of, because I'm sure you don't want to wade through hundreds of images, but we'll be giving you a flavour. And, the best bit is that if you can't see a picture of something you really want to see a picture of, just ask! We'll scurry off with our cameras as soon as we can and bring you one back.

We're kicking off the photos and stuff really soon. I believe we're starting with the Prefab - tons to photograph in there!

So, if you've got questions about the ASAP, just ask. We're really excited about it, and hope you are too!

New guy here. This seems a fun place to start. One of their volunteers, Anna, has a twitter at

http://twitter.com/heritageanna

The Avoncroft Museum twitter suggests following it if you're interested in the ASA Project. Nothing interesting there so far, but thought I'd put out the heads up.

I think everything on the forums will end up being game related. I'm curious to see what they come up with since there are so many possibilities available to them.

Going to try to follow along on this one.

I went ahead and signed up for their forum. We'll see what happens.

EDIT: I've noticed that members on the forum have karma points, and you can "exalt" or "smite" other members. Think it's related?

To eliminate any doubt, museum's definitely a real place:

It's been around for almost 50 years.
