The Legion of Extraordinary Dancers (The LXD)
Transmedia Webseries or ARG

Exciting news for those of you who were around for TSDO last year -- The LXD has finally launched, after offering sneak peaks at venues including The Oscars, TED, and So You Think You Can Dance.

Episode 01.01 - The Tale of Trevor Drift
Episode 01.02 - Antigravity Heroes

Episode 01.02 includes a link to http://colewaters.com/ and the press leading up to the series' launch has focused heavily on its interactive elements, so it's possible this might be on the more ARGish side of transmedia (especially given Cole's role in the story)

Addendum: TSDO was an unrelated project dedicated to getting people dancing over the internet.

And unfortunately, it's not available in Canada... if anyone knows of an alternate viewing resource than Hulu *tsk*, please share.

So far the promos seem to say "US" premiere, so maybe it'll open to Canada+other countries shortly. Still. Dumb hulu. =P

Super awesome!

If you are the sort of person who is interested in what characters we might see in the fFuture...
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

The "locked" character images on the LXD homepage have the fFile names (and therefore suggest the character names):

Autumn
copeland
dark doctor (wearing a black mask)
dark nurse (maybe a school nurse?)
elliot
fanboys
katana
jato
sp3cimen (wearing big black shades)
Spex
Lettermakers (2 people in closeup, talking maybe?)

Wow, notgordian (and to a lesser extent theLXD) all I have to say is thank you you may have just gotten my wife interested in ARG's. It's taken me almost 2 years but hey it'll be worth it Razz

Ok, so we just watched the first episode and I noticed they spent quite a bit of time showing the prom invitation so I took a longer look at it while my wife was busy elsewhere and there is a URL at the bottom (attaching screenshot) the longest view of it occurs at 5:30 in (at least on hulu.com, for some reason watching on the site itself was choppy for us). However, it appears to say ????????.edu.net which I'm fairly sure is an invalid address unless they were able to use edu.net which would be weird but possible i guess. If someone else can get a better read on it that would be awesome as I can't make it out at all. I think I see prom in there but I dunno. Anyway look at the very bottom of the invite, it says "Info at:" and then the URL.

ETA:
?g??i?rpr???k.edu.net

ok our best guess after working together is aseniorpromSPLATk.edu.net

I think it says theseniorpromSPLATk.edu.net

here is a less blurred screencap. You can tell that the "the" in "Spin in the Gymnasium" looks a lot like the letters before "seniorprom" in the email addy. Also, the "k" in the word "tickets" looks a lot like the letter after "@" in the addy.

I just fired off an email to aseniorpromSPLATk.edu.net , saying just hi. Just to test if it goes through. So far I haven't received any failed delivery status notification. I'm not sure if it's the right email though, just trying. Anyone else tried emailing it?

Also, I tried visiting the url http://k.edu.net , it seems there's no site for it. It just redirects to http://www.firstplace.com/

I've been following Cole's blog too, I sure hope they update it more often because that's the only way I am able to follow the story. (Boo country restriction)

Yeah I sent out an email as soon as I found it, it just came back (after about 24 hours) that it wasn't getting a response from the mail server, the standard delivery error when a server isn't accepting mail.

ETA: I think the PM's are very new to arg's/virals and either didn't expect anyone to see that or goofed. Also there is a glitch and all of the locked character bios can be viewed, I was attempting to email them to tell them but there is no contact information anywhere that I can see.

GPS coordinates in the most recent LXD episode. Seems to be Fairfield, Iowa near a courthouse. Possibly an LXD HQ? (Also: letter refers to the LXD as "the League", making the whole "is it the Legion or League of Extraordinary Dancers" conundrum even more challenging.)

Also, both the box that was surgically implanted in Sp3cimen and the LXD insignia have the number "7" on it -- whether that's something representing Sp3cimen or the organization in general remains to be seen, as I don't think we've seen any other artifacts close up. However, it's worth noting the star that appears in both images has seven points.

There's a venue near that location, but nothing specific to #thelxd on their events calendar, http://www.fairfieldacc.com/

Wife and I finally watched the 3rd episode and we're looking at things on the site. Under Sp3cimen's Bio it mentions "Pleasanton Hospital". I thought it looked too boring to be IG, but my wife said check the hospital so I did and there is a very nice but definitely IG web site there. Was registered 3 days before the episode aired so it's not a GJ.

From http://pleasantonhospital.com
Quote:
I want to put to rest any further stories or gossip surrounding the hospital's "Grim Reaper". Our state of the art video surveillance system is yet to catch a glimpse of anyone matching the description of the assailant, a fabled "Dark Doctor" who's been blamed for patients disappearing from their beds all the way back to the 1950′s. And in spite of the fact that another patient went missing just last week – a soldier who was being treated for critical wounds – we're confident that the hospital will once again be held in the esteem it enjoyed when Dr. James first cut its ribbon.

There's a place where you can schedule a checkup and it has a box for a phone number! Yay!

I'm so happy this is turning into an actual ARG, even if the creators seem to be a little new.

ETA: Also mentions an attorney that we can't seem to locate after a very quick search
Quote:
Please direct any press or media inquiries to Pleasanton Hospital's attorney. He can be reached through Hoffman, Liebman & Associates – just ask for Spex.

ETA2: The hospital is also mentioned in the Dark Doctor's Bio, and the Dark Nurse's. It's also referenced incorrectly as "Pleasanton Medical" in the Dark Nurse's STATS section.

More leads that so far lead nowhere (Emphasis mine):
http://thelxd.com/characters/dark-doctor/
Quote:
attempts have been made to trace Dark Doctor's origins, each one ends in a dead end at the Edwards Air Force Base in New Mexico.

The real EAFB is in California.

Quote:
Although the hospital still denies any wrongdoing to Martin Woodlington – who was accidentally administered a near-fatal doses of vitamin C, walnut extract and estrogen during his short stay here at our facility

Quote:
our very own Hospital Administrator, Chelsea Armstrong

ETA3: Wow! I posted a comment under another name and not more than 30 minutes later the admin accepted it and responded and this was at 12:30AM EST!

OMG that is so double rainbow!! After reading the i09 interview, I concluded that if it were an ARG, the gears would go into motion when they worked things out to release the webseries internationally. But here it is! Smile

Also, thanks AzureWolf for the reply. I received a Delivery Status Notification for the email as well.

I recently saw a trailer for "Step Up 3D", which is written and directed by Jon M. Chu, the same person doing these videos. I noticed the robot guy is in that movie, and I imagine some of the other cast is also in both.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89TLbK6o-og

My first fear was that this ARG was simply going to be a promo for that movie, but the story lines seem very different so I think it is a completely different story.

Ok the "Schedule a Checkup" booking calendar on http://pleasantonhospital.com/

Last night right before midnight I signed my wife up for a checkup (Since she found the site Cool) on the 16th not thinking there were only minutes left in the 16th and nothing happened.

A little while later I noticed the date issue and signed myself up for the 17th. I instantly received an email
Quote:
Your reservation for: July 17, 2010 has been approved.

First Name:Azure
Last Name:Wolf
Email:azurewolf@****
Phone:**********
Details:
Just need a regular check up thanks.

Thank you, Pleasanton Hospital
http://pleasantonhospital.com/home

Then this morning I noticed the 17th was no longer selectable in the booking section. Now it would seem the 20th is no longer available. Did anyone here book the 20th? or the 17th? or any other dates? To be fair to my wife I'm going to sign her up again, I'll update if whatever date we select becomes unavailable.

ETA: Signed my wife up for the 19th, no email but now the date is purple and unselectable, the 24th also became unselectable and purple. But they're a different color than the other 2 days that have been reserved. Odd.

Well done, AzureWolf -- nice to see some progress! I signed up for August 1st.

Also, unlike the ColeWaters page, the developers didn't register with Domains by Proxy, so it looks like we now know the creative minds behind this: (hidden behind the cut for those that don't want the meta-information)

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Land Elsewhere -- the description provided by Land Elsewhere puts a damper on the "full-blown ARG" idea, but promises a continuation of a more passive transmedia type experience as things progress.

Also, going back to the series' interest with "7" -- in addition to the LXD logo, the show's launch was on 7-7.
