The Colony
Transmedia event

Did a search and didn't see anything so ... just delete if necessary Mods.

J. C. Hutchins is involved with Discovery channel with what looks to be an interesting interactive 'story'.

Here is ARGNet's article on it:
http://www.argn.com/2010/07/coming_soon_new_online_experience_from_jc_hutchins/

J. C. Hutchins page on it:
http://jchutchins.net/site/stillhere/

And the 'experience' of The Colony here:
http://thecolony.discovery.com/#fbid=_7SSk99ICRL

The show starts July 27th at 10:00 pm E/P

There is already activity on The Colony site. You do not have to join Facebook to 'experience' it, however, it claims to make the experience more intense.

Just wanted to pass it on ---

Heh, you beat me to it. I was coming here to post this. Razz

It's not just J.C. and Discovery Channel: Campfire Media in New York is involved as well.

To elaborate further on this, I will quote directly from the email J.C. Hutchins sent:

Quote:
Hey there!

It's been a while since I've reached out to you using my mailing list. Lots has happened since my last shout -- 7th Son: Descent was published to critical acclaim (and is still available at Amazon and in bookstores), and in news that may disappoint some of you, I retired from podcasting to focus more attention on my writing career.

That decision has literally paid off: My latest fiction project -- a groundbreaking online narrative that gives you and your friends ringside seats to the end of the world -- is now live. I've worked with dozens of talented creators and developers at Campfire on this story for months now, and hope you'll find it as fun and resonant as we do.

We've nicknamed this story #StillHere. It's a transmedia experience designed to introduce you the devastated world of the Discovery Channel's TV program The Colony. It's an interesting place to visit, but you wouldn't want to live here: this world has been wrecked by an ultra-contagious virus called "Nuclear Flu." The second season of The Colony debuts in the U.S. on Tuesday, July 27.

The Colony show features seven non-actor volunteers participating in an immersive social experiment, exploring what life might be like after this biological catastrophe. They're tasked with surviving without creature comforts, facing physical and emotional challenges -- including danger from rival survivors. I've seen The Colony's first season, and thought it was pretty amazing.

My involvement with The Colony and Discovery begins and ends with #StillHere, an exclusive online prequel experience that simulates how this pandemic could spread and affect those closest to you. Using the familiar setting of your favorite social network, you'll bear witness to the unhinging of the world, told from many unique perspectives: those of your family and friends.

Literally, your family and friends. Your Facebook-connected buddies are already posting at the site, riding shotgun toward the apocalypse. Your loved ones are writing status updates about hope and coping in this damaged world ... sharing newscast videos about the virus ... commenting on blog posts, photo galleries, home-made videos, breaking news stories and more. They're scraping by, desperately trying to outrun the Nuclear Flu, and need you to join them.

Which you should do. Right now. At JoinTheColony.com.

More than 300 updates and comments -- and dozens of videos, photos, articles and more -- await you, all set in an America ravaged by this unstoppable virus. As part of Campfire's creative team that included artists, filmmakers, animators and programmers, I acted as Lead Writer, playing a large role in creating the world of #StillHere. But this narrative machine had many moving parts, and the people who envisioned and executed this project are as numerous as they are talented.

Give the #StillHere simulation a spin. Visit JoinTheColony.com, log in using Facebook Connect, and behold a unique narrative experience customized solely for you. If you enjoy it, share its content on Twitter and Facebook with your friends and family. Spread the word.

Oh. One thing. Don't bother getting a preventative flu shot or buying a surgical face mask before embarking on your #StillHere experience. Nuclear Flu is already in the air, right now. You've probably already contracted it.

Your friends certainly have. As you'll soon discover, not all of them will make it.

JoinTheColony.com. Have fun.

#StillHere,

--J.C.

Just a heads up, this will actually be the second season of The Colony. The first one was run between July and September last year

I really loved the first season of The Colony. It was filmed near the "LA River" which is just fascinating in itself. (edit: This season is in Louisiana)

TBH, I haven't been too impressed by this "transmedia experience" (even though I wrote that argn article before it came out). I was hopeful. Perhaps there's something I'm missing? But there doesn't seem to be much to it?

I'd like to be proven wrong, of course.

The idea behind the show was laughable in the first season and I don't expect much more from the second.

I don't think the idea behind the show is any more laughable than any other survivor reality show. But, whatever....

I dont know, i think the way it take the names and photos of your facebook friends and brings them into the world of the colony is interesting. Rather than random NPCs, the people in the game are your friends and family presenting you with info. Ill keep an eye on it at least.

The very fact that they're using your facebook friends in a way I'm sure they weren't asked for consent on seems a little disturbing to me.

I've seen commercials for The Colony on Discovery Channel lately. For some reason they're touting it as a series premiere. I watched a few episodes of the first season. It wasn't horrible IMO. It wasn't your typical reality TV show but it had a lot of the same elements of one.

I don't like this 'feature'. Mad
I dislike the way it puts words in my friends' mouths.

If you are unable to separate the game from reality, then you should follow their instructions of the front page, either dont tie it into your facebook or just close the browser and dont play. Pretty simple.

Actually, the reason I dislike the feature is because it makes the game less real and less immersive. The writing style does not match that of my friends and therefore it completely shatters the fourth wall.

I agree that this level of facebook integration is interesting, because of the philosophical issues it raises.
