[Trailhead?] Handshake Magazine
Magazine that claims it's an ARG, too

http://handshakemag.com/

Quote:
Handshake is not just a magazine or a website. It is also an ARG (alternate reality game) and a social media hub that uses the internet to connect with its audience in a revolutionary way. We encourage our readers to go on missions, solve puzzles, and report back to us. With Handshake, you don't just read the magazine. You are a part of the magazine.

Created and produced by graduate journalism students at Syracuse University's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, the magazine and website target 20-somethings with an interest in geek, online, and gaming cultures.

More details from the inaugural September issue (available as a pdf):
Quote:
Our Handshake handlers sprinkled
missions and puzzles throughout the
issue. Like a jigsaw, our puzzles are
all connected. Collect the pieces
to see the bigger picture. Missions
are classified assignments that you
can only access through your agents
account. Find them. Complete them.
Then sign into handshakemag.com
to collect your prizes. Check in and
say hello.

Without going through the magazine in depth, I can't see how much this translates into an ARG, but it's an interesting venture nonetheless. I particularly like how the website includes links to the articles in the table of contents. (ie, /prostitution-not-funny or /some-powerful-shit). Plus, Cory Doctorow interview!

Am I missing something because I can't find that quote or any mentions of ARGs?

It would appear that pages with a blue question mark icon on them have clues. I've found a few including a bar code, highlisted text, morse code.

I haven't had time to go through the entire magazine or decode much of it, though.

ETA: one website which I believe is IG is http://orobotics.com found on page 37

Ther eis a camera in their "gadgets" section with this description:

Quote:
A horny teen's best friend.
O Robotics finally found a way to make stalking easier for
peeping Toms. The OR 8500 snaps photos through walls, doors
— even buildings. Made with tried-and-tested X-ray flash, the
cam comes with its own X-ray power strobe, eliminating the
need for metering. A lightweight O Robotics alloy shielding
lines the back of the camera for protection. The 50 mm fixed
lens with focal distance scale, 3-inch LCD, and 18 megapixels
with X.O.R. color help provide a crystal-clear view of whatever
lies on the other side of that wall.
Where to buy: ORobotics.com
Price: $800
Camera win: X-ray. Need we say more?
Camera fail: Not for use on humans or animals, unless you'd
like your German shepherd to glow in the dark.

Hmm..I missed the Tox part. There is a @Tox on twitter with one tweet (today) and following one person @commelacouleur with one tweet (2 days ago) Those tweets are from 2007

I don't know if these are IG or not. Primary Communication - twitter - Tox could mean something else I suppose. Not sure what to make of the rest

There is a picture of a domino (which totals 4) and "-u" which probably means "for". That's on page 83.

ETA: the binary on second to last page doesn't seem to translate to anything...useful.

The people are positioned so that the white space says "these"

ETA: I'm not so sure that's a barcode. I've cleaned it up and tried decoding but all the barcode readers I've used say no barcode detected.

Mouse over the images on O Robotics and the images move.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
After the image has moved, you can see each has a character, but some are hard to read or find. Or just look at the source and open the images. Not sure if the order follows the image naming convention.

I think it is supposed to anagram to 'looking glass' with a slash and maybe a dash. Goes along with Wonderland and ARGs for sure.

It would appear that way. It's different coords than those in the back of the magazine. There must be another forum somewhere.

ETA: The poem is by CS Lewis from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/How_Doth_the_Little_Crocodile

ETA2: Just below the poem in teeny tiny letters is the following

Code:
havalhash c7d4995c871325f33e1a985fb910ad70 fab52e9388a457ce37afaab5236fc7256a8ae878 157e39c1f46f35cf122068b4b08f63a56368d5d908fc4777 aef371f425369ed47255e2255dae5f6008d1ddc13c5de60890ddbbba a6d177a117d76e1b2495491b942744d82844c930a63ec1705a996b7c79270dfa 5ad07726ac35032a0f2cbdac1edac5a0 6fdf520e9ad1a1c94c4b7f1f0671bbed6ea90569 e2203ef8757721c968db929d1bc8bbf973c5e404eb509c6d 45d924b75d9421521aaffc0e59a3b7abef4705cb1ddf38f3eaa78d0c 45d924b75d9421521aaffc0e59a3b7abef4705cb1ddf38f3eaa78d0c a6b26c3d2dc84b5c9f8531be2bc7fbc3 a0d172644ab548c91e4ea17124cfc6741c2531db 355e1e43b1d998c5c08c40a4b38c628254085ba82d07858f 8d803c5b6bda75ffdf55b96d105d2fd4d59459f4768223cd6a66815a 861ec953a3df91b9481b21b394ff11a339680951cc6db502179876d73e1e4d1

Appears to be Hex but it's all mashed together. Might take some time to separate it. Also, clicking on the letters brings up a dialouge box that say "Handshake cannot be trusted"

Naw, it's not hex. It says it's HAVAL.

Unfortunately, I can't find a HAVAL wordlist so we might have to generate a ton of them. But Wikipedia also says that HAVAL has some weaknesses so maybe we could exploit those.
