Salt, Transformers, Twilight, 2012, and Cloverfield are a few examples of non-comic events held at Comic con.

These days Comic Con is more about the movies coming up than about the comics. Yes there are a lot of comic booths but what draws the crowds is normally the booths for various movies and tv shows.
JJ Has a LONG history with Comic Con, heck I believe they had a booth for LOST and a panel every year the show was on. I also remember there was some info about Cloverfield before it came out.
Don't let the name fool you. Comic Con is more Entertainment Con. Ask anyone in the Comic business... you get more Comic stuff at Wizards World. (just avoid Wizards New York, last years sucked)

It has nothing to do with SUPER 8 not being related to comics.
Yes, JJ is appearing in the panel with Whedon, but they're speaking at the Entertainment Weekly panel on the subject of pop culture entertainment. EW may sneak in a SUPER 8 question, but I doubt JJ can or will say much about it this early. EW has their own panel agenda on this one.
To fully promote SUPER 8, JJ would need to be in a Paramount-sponsored panel with the studio behind it (bringing film clips, photos, etc.).
I'm guessing you'll have to watch for WonderCon or some other event in the next 9 months to see a true SUPER 8 panel at a con. I'd guess SUPER 8 will hit theaters before Comic-Con 2011.

LOL!
I never thought it that way. ... I just think it's too early for any information.
Tho, J.J. did speak two sentences about the project.
What? NO 3-D?!?!
LOL! ... I don't even think there were any 3-D Super 8 cameras ever made
I wouldn't have thought the movie was going to be in 3-D to begin with.
Maybe , as filming begins in September ... Paramount will round up some footage and release a special 3-D trailer with one of the MANY 3-D movies opening up between October and Jan. (With a disclaimer: THIS MOVIE WILL NOT BE IN 3D")
BTW - Does anyone have any pictures yet?
I'm especially interested in ones "SUPERFAN8" mentioned NOT getting on another thread: http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=722554#722554
