Re: Hype and SWAG "value"

Maybe... I think that the MAD prices for Tron SWAG will continue to climb until the movie release, maybe a week or two into it, and then plummet for a LONG while. Especially if the market is flooded with toys and promos and clothes and stuff (like I am assuming).

Now if the movie is a "Phenomenon" like Matrix (not Avatar), it is possible that SOME of the SWAG may appreciate in value for collectors for some time, even years, after the movie release. And if the movie is a "phenomenon", than the sequel will make this original SWAG really collectible. However, the "value" of this SWAG is really riding on the movie's success, like it or not. It'll be "valuable" after the movie only if the movie does really well. If the movie only does OK (or God Forbid, worse), than the SWAG will be only SWAG LOL, and not have any value and most "collectors" will disappear. People like me, people who just love TRON, will always "want" this stuff and hold onto it, but it won't really have any "value" in the collector's or public market.

Of course, after the sequel is announced, SOME of the original SWAG may have some value again. If the sequel does GREAT, than the original SWAG will be very valuable, and collectors will come from everywhere. So, I'm guessing, if Tron Legacy OR the Sequel does REALLY WELL, SOME of the original SWAG will be coveted by collectors everywhere.
---------------

Based on everything I've seen, here's my guess of some "valuable" SWAG long term, if we all get lucky that Tron Legacy OR it's sequel is REALLY popular...

* Tron Tokens (the key is to be able to identify "originals" so no one can make knockoffs, or 42E can't just continue to issue more, otherwise, the tokens will be forever worthless, along with the pocket/purse/puch that holds them - So by my thinking, the gold "Home of Tron" tokens will be the most valuable of all, since they can be easily identified as originals)

* The Tron "End Of Line" poster (Since it's limited edition, this could be popular - it all depends on the movie(s) ability to raise awareness of the end of line slogan or end of line club)

* Tron Guest Badge (I think the tron personalized Encom Badges with pics will be essentially worthless, but this is just MHO - the guest pass is "truly rare" so if the movie(s) do well, this badge could be worth something for trading or collecting)

** The Tron SDCC USG Disc (the guy who has 001-500 of this limited edition could get a FORTUNE for it if one or both of the two movies takes off)

* The original 3 Tron Trading cards (only if they start issuing a LOT of "normal" tron movie/trading cards, otherwise, these 3 will never have any "real" collector value)

* The blue tron wallet (but the value of this, in my opinion, will always be small, because of the DELUGE of tron toys and stuff that surely is coming)

* The Flynn's Arcade Ticket (although I am skeptical of this - possibly if it's signed by the director, but even then, I am not so sure...)

* The Space Paranoids Pin, the 89 pin (If these pins can stay "unique", people will ALWAYS pay money for them)

* The Encom Postcard Mailers of Arcwars, Astrogunner, Circuit Cycles, etc. (This, the guest pass, and the pins I think are sure bets to always hold "some" value to some collector, easy collectible...)

* Tron Holofoil Card (This is my sleeper pick - I think this will be highly collectible if one or both movies does well)

Here's some SWAG stuff that I think will mostly be worthless or only have any meaning to the collector or Tron Lover (not the trader or seller):

* Any Flynn Lives or Tron clothing - limited edition or not (I could be way wrong about this, but I just don't see the clothing as collectible or long-term valuable other than just having it before the movie releases... Part of my thinking is because I truly think we will be DELUGED with Tron clothing, so people wont even care about the "rare" stuff)

* The Screening Ticket (again, this will only be valuable to hard-core collectors, and never to "normal" people that want to collect "valuable" tron stuff - this thing has way too much sentimental value)

* All the paper posters that have Flynn Lives on them (blue black, all of them, I just don't think they'll ever be worth anything, too easy to dupe, and not recognizable enough by the general public)

* The UV Lamp, phone, USB, Scavenger Hunt Map, Flynn's arcade directions, etc. (These will have large sentimental value, but collecters will care less about this stuff)

* The Acheivement Badge Stickers (the ones with the FL codes on them - worthless, I don't think anyone will ever pay or trade for them)

* The 89 stickers (even if they are never used, they are too plain and too conterfeitable for anybody to think they'd be worth something, if you are looking for money, dump these stickers before the movie comes out)

* The Tron Coasters (This is one I could be wrong about, but generally, I think they will always be "worthless"... That being said, right now I am dying to get my hands on at least one of them LOL)

* Tron Glow Sticks (This have a limited life span anyway, and it's too, uhh, gimmicky. I don't think these will be worth squat after the movie comes out, even if the movie is a huge success)

* Any Magazines with Tron Covers (forever worthless, always trading around the cover price, which isn't bad actually).

All this is just my opinion. That being said, right now, the SWAG is at it's MOST valuable, and will continue right up until the movie release. Then, we will just have to wait until the movie (or it's sequel) does really well... or not... But for collector's or true lover's of the original 1982 movie (like me), we will always treasure this stuff... Love to hear other peoples thoughts, just don't trash me too much... Wink

i agree prices will soar as the movie gets clser, them plummet once the real gear hits the shelves mid november. it'll probably go up again once the 3rd movie starts coming out with viral gear again though.

I'd tend to agree with the above analysis, with the caveat that we don't know what's left in the viral campaign and how it'll play out... Possibly affecting the collectibility of the previous items. For instance.. If additional tokens for different games come out, later, people who get them will be more intent on acquiring the previous SDCC tokens. Additional pins will be made more valuable if you can acquire the older SPO/89 pins to make a set. That said, I never sell anything (Really. If I don't need it anymore, I give it away or donate it to a charity.) so I may be way off base.

It will play out just like any other fad that has come along I'm sure, you can plot it with a graph--- prices will escalate, plateau and then drop. But regardless how it plays out... all this swag to the real tron fans will be priceless

That's why as a fan of Tron since '82, I am playing the waiting game on just about anything with a price tag attached to it unless I am getting it for the price it originally cost. I will be just as big a Tron fan in 10 years when this stuff is going for pennies as I am right now. I can wait. Any of the stuff that was handed out free or obtained as part of the ARG, I am willing to pay a SMALL fee for to compensate the individual who went through the trouble of getting it. But these prices on ePay are just BEYOND ridiculous and I hope the people paying them feel very foolish in the years to come when they look back. Then again, to each their own. I guess if you have the money and you want the stuff bad enough, who's to call you out for spending on it.

One thing I will disagree on as far as the above is the Flynn Lives posters. I may be wrong but I don't think bootlegging a poster with blacklight elements mixed into the design is very cheap to do. I'd be interested in knowing how many of these were actually made by 42E because I've already seen just as many End Of Line posters on eBay as I saw Flynn Lives posters after last year's SDCC. Or even Wondercon for that matter. Also, did all of the Flynn Lives posters have the blacklight Recognizers on them or was that only the SDCC ones?

Honest Officer...
They fell off a truck!

Light Cycles by the case

No-limit on Vintage Figures either, I guess.

So wrong.

And, 42.. I keep forgetting to mention... If you're listening, a good game promo might be some kind of UV light source say, in the form of an identity disc or that shines out the ass-end of a light cycle? Especially if there's any more UV reactive ink stuff happening.

Note the lack of real closeup on the action figure boxes. I can't make out the limited edition text, which on the real thing as we know has its own 'GI Joe' hallmark error.

Something definitely a bit fishy here.

Flynn Lives Posters

You actually have a point on the Flynn Lives posters being unique and hard to counterfeit. I'm just wondering, after movie 1 gets released, assuming its a runaway success, how popular "Flynn Lives SWAG" will be versus "Tron Legacy SWAG". You can make the case that the tokens, pins, and postcards are "Flynn Lives SWAG", but I think that after the movie, new TRON FANS will want this stuff pretty bad. Will the new TRON FANS want "Flynn Lives SWAG"? Especially if they never participated in the ARG. Time will tell, but I think your point is totally valid. Those Blacklight imprinted posters are rare, and could be worth something to the "Tron Collectors/Traders" if the movie (or the sequel) is a super success. Thanks for your comments on my post! Smile

Looking to trade...

I have tried on Tron-Sector.. but I guess I will try here.
I'm trying to get :

Flynn Lives Shirt (Large)
Flynn Lives Poster
89 Forever stickers
Space Paranoid pin

I never received the last 2 through Flynn Lives.

But for trade I do have:

Flynn's Arcade Coins and pouch
Flynn's Arcade Ticket
Tron: The Betrayal SDCC preview comic
Tron: The Betrayal poster
Maybe I might throw in one of the glow sticks
I forgot to add .. End of Line Poster

But if anyone can help, that would be awesome!

The VALUE list was is a great estimate of what others might think outside of the personal value that we as players hold in the ARG. I found one very important item missing on the list that would be hard to counterfeit and the amount manufactured is undetermined at the moment, although I am sure it could be found out if one was determined enough to look in to it.
BITs
We must assume they were produced in limited numbers. What that amount is, is unknown at this time.
ADDITIONALLY The count is actually split three ways!
Yes Bit
No Bit
Neutral Bit
Further more the bits hold value to ones taste as such in the form of art.Examples: (I want to own a Neutral Bit because that is the movie object/characters natural state, or I want a No Bit because it fits my personal liking and or taste, Or I like the Yes Bit for its artistic form)
Many factors fall in place to add additional value to our exclusive bits.
I personally treasure my Neutral Bit and have built a display case for it.http://pulse.yahoo.com/_5K2XUZ36QGTFDE27RINQVPT4GU/album/photos/99514http://pulse.yahoo.com/_5K2XUZ36QGTFDE27RINQVPT4GU/album/photos/99515

Yes, ladies and gentlemen... this is the Scalperus Assholeus in its natural environment. Check out his other offerings for further evidence of its sad, pathetic state, living off of the broken dreams of others. If you see one in the wild, make sure to kick it squarely in the pelvis.
