Huzzah for all the new people! Smile Welcome to Unfiction.

I kind of figured that Mulligan's footstep clue was about tracing your footsteps. Since that's what he did... he traced a footprint. lol.

I'll be really keen to see people's photographs of the route. Especially if you find that rock that the Captain loves so much.

 Theories
Tom's Numbers and footprint

Hi! I'm new to unfiction thanks to welostourgold. I love this forum so far. I live very close to Central Park and got to visit it yesterday at 5pm and today from 11 to 3. I took pics and videos which I'll post up later tonight. So far, yes I think we can confirm Walach Walk (I took pics of the stone with the name), Balto, the "cave", the two statues, the dairy, but not really the rock. Funny, at the dairy I found a book called The Old Pirate of Central Park by Robert Priest. Bought a nice detailed map at the gift store and everything... also just a gorgeous day to be out. I'm not sure about the rock, there's a ton all around that area.

BUT I noticed something.

All the lampposts have four digit numbers that start with the number 6! AHA!!! I might be wrong but it's a damn good coincidence. So I checked what the numbers meant (which gives you a cross street and distance inward toward the park and tried my best (I had a baby and a dog to maneuver) to find these three numbers. Guess what... Some are missing. While looking for 6229 it led me across a bridge below the rink but it was missing. I got up to 6227. Then I was looking for 6323 which is around the arsenal, but I could only find 6324 right next to the zoo's gift shop. After that I was tired so I came home. Maybe someone should try to look for 6251. Maybe this is me going treasure crazy and I should just wait to the next video.

Also the footprint. I think it just means to retrace our steps... literally. I found that I had to walk through wein walk and the zoo in order to go back to walach walk. It might also mean to walk back from sherman's statue and see what was in between that and the rock... the pond, the bust of Moore (I like that last one the best because it's a mispelling of more like windowsill and windowsele.).

Anyway got to go. Maybe this is all garbage but I like it Very Happy

Hey all... I live about 2 hrs. away from New York and am working most days, so it will be difficult for me to be active on this one, but I think the concept is fun and the videos are cool to watch... I'll be lurking on here for a while, if I have any extraordinary insights I'll let y'all know. Laughing Just saying hi for now!

Very cool stuff czg22. Thanks!

This website confirms your reading of the lamp post numbers as indicating the nearest street and the east-west direction relative to the park.
Quote:
You call determine your north-south direction by checking the numbers on lamp posts. The first two numbers indicate the nearest cross street. Thus if you pass #6687 and then come to #6513, you know you are beaded downtown or south.

However, for the sake of other puzzlers, can you give a little more detail as to where on the lamp posts the numbers are located? I can't see any numbers in these photos for example.

Edit: I have created a new map to take into account the position of the lamp posts as reported by czg22, overlaid with the agreed upon clue route so far. If anyone reports the location of the last lamp post (#6251) I will update the map.

The numbers are on silver tags. I found 6250 between overlook rock and the pond!! Thanks czg22! The rock looks a lot like the captain's, but that water ramp thing definitely isn't there.

Signed up for unfiction, it would be great to decode this thing. I'm pretty excited.

I have a hunch it's in brooklyn.

I live in New york and don't mind doing footwork.

Lamppost Maybe Not Be A Good Theory
Or maybe taking us to the west side of the park...

So, I kept reading on the lampposts. Either my theory ain't so good or we need to be going west and that's why the next video will be helpful. Here's what I read from the official central park map (buy it at the dairy and support the conservancy Very Happy ):

Quote:
Finding Your Way Identification plates on many Park lampposts serve as orientation tools. The first two numbers indicate nearest cross street; the last two numbers, if even, indicate that the area is closer toward the east side (Fifth Avenue) and, if the numbers are odd, the area is closer toward the west side (Central Park West).

Here's what I'm thinking after watching this video a million times. I think the next video will continue in Central Park somewhere in the SW side.

You are probably right.

I walked the route in central park

I followed the route from 72nd street all the way down to army. I didn't find anything. I found no hidden USB sticks or treasure maps. No pirates or ninjas of any kind. No interesting characters. I did see some other treasure hunters though. I heard someone talking about morse code.

Speaking of Morse at the 72nd street entrance to the park where I started there is a big statue of Morse. More info here (http://www.centralpark2000.com/database/morse.html).

I also saw a couple of bronze plaques noting that I was walking on Wallachs Walk. But nothing very interesting there.

I went to the top of Overlook Rock and while it does look a lot like the flashback scene with the captain and totty it is certainly not that spot. There is no waterfall backdrop there and the stone is much darker on overlook rock. I even tried to line up the cracks in the rock from the video with the cracks in overlook rock and there was no match that I could find.

No notes or anything unusual on any of the statues (balto, columbus, shakespeare, grand army). Just a shit-ton of tourists.

In short, not much to report. Certainly no footstep related clues that I could find either.

Suppose I might as well throw my hat in.

Literally discovered this an hour ago, got the morse code and a few of the Central Park references, but nothing else.

I'm a native NYCer, am looking forward to having fun with this one. =)

Tottie (the correct spelling)

If you would like to see what has to be where "Tottie" came from:
http://query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9400E0D9153CE633A25750C0A9609C946396D6CF

I can't come up with much that it helps, except (spoiler)
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
to relate the Captain's flashback to the Zoo
, but it is cool. I also can't figure out how the filmmakers came across this item. 1912!

My news is basically the same. The Morse Statue at 72nd got me so excited... however, when I realize the real start to Wallach Walk is actually much further south, I felt a little deflated.

Also, same to report about The Pond and Overlook Rock. Nothing there looks anything like that video. I walked around all the walkable parts of The Pond and saw nothing resembling it.

I'm going to take a look at the maps posted and see if there's anything I can add/fine tune.

Well that is disappointing. Oh well, back to the drawing board then. I think we just need to keep going over stuff in the video to keep sparking ideas. Glad some of you locals checked it out.

Some Pics From Today's Visit
I have more but coming later...

Some Pics of my trip today. I have more but they're on another device.

Totally random coincidence. I found this book at the souvenir shop in the Dairy.

Also another weird random coincidence: Yesterday my hubby and I thought that Belvedere Castle might be part of the clue. Don't go there, it's not! But suddenly it seemed like a scence out of the Amazing Race. There was a piraty looking guy playing Irish songs. Hubby asked if he was a pirate. He said no that he was a minstrel. So then Hubby says he might get asked a lot if he knows where the gold is. He winks a lot and says he knows nothing. Suspicious right. Turns out he was just crazy! Here's that pic.

Here's a blurry picture of a model of Central Park that was on display at the Dairy:

Here's one of the lamppost numbers I was tracking, but it looks like I should be looking on the west side instead:

This is Gapstow Bridge right next to that lamppost and below the rink:

This is a random pic but I thought it was a beautiful coincidence. This is the foot of the Lombard Lamppost with an anchor on it:

Last for this set, this is Sherman's Statue at Grand Army Plaza:

Done for now! Good luck, treasure hunters!
