The 2 and 3 trains run under Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn, but given the tiny distances between these first clues, I'm wondering how they'll manage to tell us to hop on the 1 and transfer, and get off? The Grand Army from Battle of the Armies seems like a big leap still.

working together

Hey tammyrichards43 I live in NYC and would love to work together. I tried signing up but got not email confirmation. Email me at benhgoldbergSPLATgmail.com and we can start working together. I have a car so I can get quickly to all parts of New York City. Fellow Traveler, you also seem to be very into this, so if you would like to work on this as well, I think we could solve this.

I am interested in working with someone for 50-50 split. No third party please. I also would like someone who has some ideas of their own so we can bounce ideas back and forth. PM me if you are that person. I can wait til you are a member also.

I really hope it doesn't come down to the last video and then a mad rush to get it.

More intrigue the better in my book.

The LIRR has been digging for quite some time along the subway on my way into work so we can eliminate large portions of Long Island City.

We watched the video ten times while standing on Overlook Rock and concluded that it wasn't a waterfall because nothing was moving. Seeing it again hours later, I'm not so positive anymore.

Although I don't think it is, it looks very similar to New Croton Dam.

I think it is a little premature to start developing alliances or whatever. We have eight weeks to go yet, so I don't think it will hurt anyone to continue to share knowledge publicly at this point. Maybe as the game gets closer to the end that will change, but we'll see.

I tend to agree. This forum is here as a *community* forum, to share insight and information. I can understand for some who live in the NYC area to want to withhold, but don't expect everyone to feel that way. If I find something relevant, I plan on posting for everyone to see. Smile

The New Croton Dam looks quite different. I don't think there's a spot like that in NYC. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/91/New_Croton_Dam_from_below.jpg

Columbus Rock
Answer

ALL OF YOU NEED TO THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX MORE!!!! Do you really think that they would make these clues easy to find if it were just going to the columbus statue in Central Park.

Follow me here for a minute and this will blow your mind. Two major things you must remember is that the treasure could be anywhere in NYC's five bouroughs and that the treasure is not in Central park (duh). What everyone is so focused on is going to statues in the park. while that may be for somethings i KNOW it couldn't be that easy. let's take the "Columbus Rock" Clue and break it down. everyone knows the ryhme "in 1492 columbus sailed the ocean blue" remember that....
Rock is short for what place in NYC? Rockafellar plaza. like the shoe 30 Rock. .. 1429 Rockafeller Plaza is the Address to ????? none other than the famous Radio City Music Hall! "Columbus Rock" means 1492 Rockafellar Plaza which is Radio City Music Hall!!!!!!!

so if you want to take this seriously and would like to team up with a true decoder like myself send me an e-mail at joemorano423 (at) aol (dot) com

I don't think Rockefeller Plaza has addresses, per se?

I think Rock Plaza has numbers, but not 1492

What Hnuter probably did was enter "1492 Rockefeller Plaza" into googlemaps. It was a good idea, but failed in this particular instance. The resulting marker was placed on Rockefeller Plaza, since 1492 Rockefeller Plaza does not exist. That of course was on top of Radio City Music Hall. The numbers at Rockefeller Plaza are all small, since the Plaza is small. Sort of like almost all the street numbers in Britain. The street names there change every couple blocks. You can click on Radio City Music Hall (actual address 1260 Avenue of the Americas). The Nintendo store is 10 Rock, the Rainbow Room and NBC stuff is 30 Rock.

The moral is not to believe everything google tells you.

if MIT can find ten red balloons in nine hours

http://web.mit.edu/press/2009/darpa-challenge-1210.html

this treasure hunt reminded me of this article which i read a while ago.

So we got to set up a network that scales monetary awards.

does anyone know what black tom says at around 4 minutes in, the captain says it doesn't belong until the next episode. and that it shouldn't make any sense now.

the lousy code that mulligan came up might span the episodes and any letters he drops/words misspelled might add up to a jumble or just the name of the final location.
'C' which could be anything
'ELE' could be plenty too, but could be elevated train after more is uncovered.

Also can anyone hear what is being said when the captain asks mulligan to say "I etted the Ice cream" I can't really make it out.
Wild speculation though.

Sharing work and rewards

It is possible to set up some cooperative system, but I doubt it will happen on this board. While probably just about everybody here is a nice, trustworthy person, there is no basis for trust in this context. Almost everyone is doing this for fun, since the actual probability of being the first one, or even part of the first team, to the treasure is small. So the amount of "work" or contribution anyone makes, and its relative value is hard to define.

There is only one treasure, in one small area, not many scattered around the country. As we get closer to the answer, the stakes will rise if anyone has figured out most of it. I would expect cooperation to decrease a bit, and that is OK. We should still share ideas. Although it might help a competitor a bit, there is more benefit to getting and stimulating others' thoughts than there is to hiding ideas, at least until the answer is very close. And at that point, it will depend on a final inspiration, which I do not expect anyone to share.

Since the treasure itself is too heavy for any one person to handle, I would guess that people will get a few face-to-face friends to help if they think they have the answer.

fellowtraveler has done a good transcript, earlier in this thread, page 8 or so. Tom is saying numbers in Japanese at the point you mention. I have not heard any thoughts on a speech of his earlier on. I would guess it may not be real Japanese at all, but I have to get one of my Japanese co-workers to help.

My intention is to keep producing the transcripts each Sunday soon after the episodes go live, as I think they will help keep us on track. Should I just keep posting them in this thread, or create a separate thread, or host it offline on a tumblr page? The problem with just posting them here is that they seem to be lost in the shuffle as evidenced by some of the newer guest posts.

I agree with jrc's predictions in terms of the likely level of cooperation on these boards. However, I am a little more pessimistic in that I suspect we may also see some attempts to spread misinformation as the game progresses. A lot will depend on the what the nature of the game is - something we can only speculate on at this point. It could be that the locations themselves form a picture when mapped, which give a clue as to the treasure's final resting place, or each episode could feature verbal clues, which pieced together, will point to the treasure's location.
