ARGdb
the imdb+ of alternate reality gaming

ARGdb, for those who don't already know about it, is a sort of IMDB of alternate reality gaming with a little social networking thrown in. The site is currently in beta and in the process of a pretty cool redesign, but it is up and running!

I'll use this thread to keep you updated on the progress of the site and, also, to get your thoughts & feedback. So, please, share those thoughts! We're listening - really!

Check it out & sign up if you haven't already: http://www.argdb.com

Ok, first post... a reply to myself. How typical of me Wink

Right now the site is in a pretty massive redesign and we really (really!) want your feedback & ideas. So...

What can you do now?
As players, you can:
* Register & add yourself to the community
* Connect to games you've played and rate & comment on them
* Connect to events you've attended and comment on them
* Connect to fellow players
* Share your contact information, on your terms, with personally created friends groups
* Search the database
* Let us know you want to be an editor so that you can add & edit information on games & events

What will you be able to do soon?
* Add a little bio blurb
* Add & Edit information about games & events
* Add press articles
* Become "fans" of puppetmasters & design teams so that you can share your contact information with them - on your terms

What will you be able to do down the road?
This is, partially, up to you guys. What do you want to be able to do? The redesign is still in the design stage and so now is a perfect time to let us know what you'd like the site to be? No idea is too out there. Feel free to use this thread for feedback or, if you'd rather, ping me privately.

A couple ideas to get you started...
* You want to be able to search people by location and contact them if there is a cache or other event in the area.
* You want to be able to get notifications for new games
* You want to see all ARG related twitters made by your ARGdb friends
* You want to be able to search for games that used a certain technology
* You want to see a calendar with upcoming game events

I've been meaning to make one technical suggestion that's kind of been bugging me for a while... <Smile

Browser compatibility
I've noted on many pages that the content doesn't render the same on different browsers (primarily, it appears like IE has been left out of the testing process). I know it's easy to favour certain browsers as better, but for very public and accessible wide-demographic sites, browser functionality should be pretty high on the priority list. I'd be more than happy to help with that if necessary... I've been having to do a lot of that in recent development projects. It can be a big pain, now with FF 2 and 3, Chrome, and IE6, 7, and 8 (especially the technical gap between those three IEs!), and of course Mac users with Safari Smile

Anyway that's all for now... just thought I'd chime in =)

It have a tip:
as a wannabe-PM, I would like to see a central part where all kinds of articles and tips about PM-ing are gathered.
Now I'm just roaming the Puppetmaster help forums and different blogs to learn what experienced PMs have to say.
I think those things could be somehow divided up in different categories. Like
Story, Interaction, Clues, Puzzles etc.
And of course you can link the articles to the profiles of the PMs that wrote them.
I don't know about copyright though. It could be a bit of a trouble to ask all the authors for permission.

To add to that, perhaps for puppetmasters allow connections to their LinkedIn profiles, or a section for links to published works. It would be up to the PMs to keep it up to date, but it could give a starting point for interested viewers to go on.

Great site!

What I would like:
- Since it seems there are mainly games that are finished/pending, I would like to have a category of "running" games.

- I always thought of "rating" games in different categories:

personal interaction: *(no interaction) **(email auto reply) ***(emails are sent to you, limited personal interation) ****(real interaction, personal replies, chat)

real life events: *(none) **(packages sent out) ***(dead drops) ****(real life events with IG characters)

technology: *(blog, facebook, myspace) **(multimedia, videos) ***(own site(s)) ****(professional web design, flash, ...)

story: *(not really) **(some background story) ***(good) ****(fantastic storytelling)

puzzles: *(none, interactive story) **(some puzzles) ***(good) ****(challanging)

This is just a first idea which surely could be improved.

Great suggestions so far! A couple of comments...

On browser compatability - Ben went through the current site and made it much more IE friendly, but if anyone is having problems, please let us know! If you can take a screenshot of the issue, please do and send it my way.

On setting up the site as an archive of design tips & discussions - I'm not sure that ARGdb is the right site for that as that's more of a "how to" than an historical record and adding that sort of resource to ARGdb (and maintaining it), beyond what the press section is set up to do (allow easy searching and archiving of articles on and about ARGs), might be fairly labor intensive. Or maybe I'm misunderstanding what you're wanting here.

On LinkedIn profiles - absolutely! I'd like to let people connect and share a variety of their social networking profiles. Beyond things like LinkedIn, Facebook, and twitter - are there any others that y'all would want us to look into and, perhaps, figure out how to best utilize?

On multiple ratings - this is a great idea and definitely something for us to consider. I can see it being really useful for people who favor puzzles or those that are looking for strong story driven experiences. I'm not sure how well a star rating for "technology" and "events" would work as it's not easily graded and the various options aren't mutually exclusive. That doesn't mean that people couldn't rank such things, just that I'm not sure we could assign such specific meaning to them. Fortunately, the new design will have a tagging system so people will be able to list the various technologies and types of events that games use. Definitely something to ponder over, though.

Thanks so much for these suggestions and I hope that they keep coming Smile

That's nice. I didn't see that. Maybe to try to extend that part with interesting Blogs (that do have a certain quality) and other non-published articles?
I know thats kind of beyond the current goals of ARGdb.

Changing the name "Community" into "players" (as opposed to PMs).

I think you can copy a lot of features from IMdb.
On the game pages: character pages, mistakes, trivia, synopsis, images. Could be all user submitted.
Bio's of the PM's.

Humans use argument to express disagreement, to reach consensus and to both formulate and convey reasoning. The theory of argument has found wide application in artificial intelligence, providing mathematical structures for automated reasoning, communication protocols for distributed processing and linguistic models for natural language processing. A key stumbling block, however, has been joining together models that focus on abstract, mathematical relationships with those that focus on concrete, linguistic relationships. The first objective of this project is to develop for the first time a theoretical account that connects static, "monologic" argument with dynamic, multi-person, "dialogic" argument and ties together abstract, mathematical models with concrete, linguistic representations.

Nice Site Imbri. Is there a way to connect my registered account to games I have PMed or played?
