[HUMOUR/SPEC] Hexapodia as the Key Insight

While I'm waiting for fans of A Fire Upon the Deep to calm back down Very Happy , perhaps I'd better explain for those who haven't read Vinge's incredible book.

During the novel an alien group with a very poor grasp of language "spams" an interstellar version of USENET with posts sharing the title above. The posts are mostly incomprehensible, and are the subject of much abuse by in-novel characters, but:

spoiler for A Fire Upon the Deep
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
remember that the posts DO actually warn about the Skroderider's complicity with the Blight, if you untangle the fractured grammar enough. As was pointed out to me by a much more observant friend... I had to go back and re-read the "spam" posts I'd skipped over lightly.

The quote's been buzzing around my head ever since varroa mites were seriously discussed... spiders and mites are eight-legged, while fleas and bees have six. (Hexapods, hmm?)

Can anybody get anything more out of this than a good laugh?

-- Steve's hoping to put to rest a nagging feeling that he's missing something.

i DARE you to make less sense!

hehe, just kiddin... sounds like an interesting read really

i think the issue largely metaphorical:

SPiDeR(8 ) vs Flea(6) = Bees(6) vs Mites(8 )

(although the protaganist/antagonist number of legs is reversed.... hmm)

but if you total them, you get:
8+6=6+8
14=14
14 divisable by 2
7=7
77
i am just being silly.... hehehehehe. (Just trying to get a "leg" up in the world) Does sound like an interesting read, though. Laughing

Didn't really expect this to break anything wide open, but that danged phrase kept haunting me. Posting it in this thread is an attempt at exorcism more than anything else, but there was the off chance that my subconscious was trying to get my attention.

And the novel is a heckuva read... I strongly recommend it to SF fans who haven't read it yet. I'm seriously thinking of buying a copy and rereading it, as it's been more than a decade and it's getting hazy in my memory.

-- Steve was mighty impressed with his description of the Tines, a really alien alien species. So impressed he jacked some of their stuff for his own work.
