red balloons

An important aspect of the balloons is not just that they are red, but that they were specifically chosen from a bunch of ballooons of different colors.

The balloons were gathered over time and caused (Perdita) to move far away from the Circus, missing her family and then searching for them leaving the balloons as hints. So the balloons are something she carefullly selected, gathered and then leaves as unmistakable hints to her presence.

I reiterate my spec that the balloons represent data packets, that they could be sound messages, and, a new idea, that it may have something to do with the whole glassing of Troy.

I can't work out why Perdita's family would leave her behind and why the circus is locked so she can't get back.

My only solid idea is that the balloons are the waves that we are hearing now, but which ones I am not sure--probably the ones the SP gives us access too-- we don't know if Durga recorded those or where they came from.

I know this is sketchy, but I need help with this spec. Please post any ideas or suggestions. I can't take this any farther than what I have written here.

I am going to be way off base in speculation I am sure, but the facts of perditas' story such as the circus and her parents leaving bother me. It is obvious that it is an allegory so who exactly are the parents in relation to real story counterparts. i.e. do they represent the govt/sections of govt/a doctor and when things go wrong with the SP (if she is represented by Perdita), she is abandoned. As far as the circus goes... they travel from town to town so perhaps it is closed because it is time to get out of Dodge? Maybe the glassing of a planet like Troy? I have no ideas, either, but hope some good theories can come forth in SPEC. Cursing

I like the idea that it is Melissa with her horde of .wavs that she keeps leaving at payphones all over the country so that we can find our way to the end of the story. But at least one thing stands out to me... Why would the sleeping princess be telling us the story of Melissa if she was asleep when all of that took place?

However, that said, (and I think this may have been said before) the clockwork rat does seem a bit like the inclusion of the pious flea in the next chapter.

Someone wanna add to this?

Following rose (always so insightful) - if the balloons are the data packets hidden for us by the SP, and represent Perdita's attempts to find her way home, should we see this as confirmation that the reassembled data packets in the recruitment story were found/were hidden as the result of the Operator's (or is it SP's) attempt to find her origins? That they in fact are her (Op? SP?) story? This was specced in the forums just based on the content of the clips, but here we seem to have confirmation with in-game evidence.

But do the recipe3 wavs fit this? I suppose of the balloons are about SP, then the recipe3 stuff is about Melissa?

Remember what the song "99 Red Balloons" was about?

No, it wasn't about red balloons, it was an allegory for nuclear war. The red balloons are mushroom clouds.

(See bombardment, Covenant.)

I knew that, 'cause the original title was 'Neunundneunzig Rot Ballons'

"Rot Ballons" being a German metaphor for nuclear explosions

Aren't I glad I did German literature in First year Uni.... finally used it 3 years later.

Well, isn't it a little scary that Perdita is using mushroom clouds to find her way back to her family? Shocked Confused Shocked

Allegory? I thought it was poking fun at the military, because they percieved this massive threat and it was really just a bunch of balloons...I'm going to have to look at that song again now...
/later/ Okay, yeah, it's both...the balloons go up into the air, the confused military blows the whole thing out of proportion and an actual nuclear war starts.
"I think of you, and let it go..."
Maybe the Princess really was thinking of this song...

Someone affixed red balloons to the street signs outside of my apartment complex today.

Haha! That was me!

Not.

On a more serious note, I wasn't thinking that Perdita's family *left* her so much as she left her family and then when she finally realized it and returned, they were gone. For all we know, they went out looking for her and it was just bad timing.
