There are some subtle differences between the two

The trees in the top of the image seem to say "Go" a lot more clearly in the "painting version"

That's pretty much all I get Razz

Wracking my brain trying to think of what a password could be if the image has something hidden in it. Tried "Answer" on a backwards cipher with the 7 = Z shift, and a bunch of others.

EDIT:

Also, I think that what looks like letters there is incidental. If you look at the same shot earlier on, there are trees and natural shadows in those places. Either they don't mean anything, or someone is wicked skilled at flora sculpture.

There is something hidden inside!
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Rename the file from .jpg to .rar. Hidden archive that contains a file called 'theanswer.txt'

Inside that file is binary:
01001001 01000011 00110101 01110111 01011010 01001000 01110000 00110110 01100100 01111001 01000010 01101100 01100100 01000011 01000010 01101100 01100011 01001000 01100011 01100111 01011010 01010011 01100100 00110101 01100010 01000101 00110100 00111101

Which translates to:
IC5wZHp6dyBldCBlcHcgZSd5bE4=

Which is base64 that translates to:
.pdzzw et epw e'ylN

Which ROTs to:
.esool ti tel t'naC

And thus
"Can't let it loose."

Jeez, that's complicated as all Hell! How did you work out the .RAR thing? Also, how DO you turn a .RAR to an image, and actually have an image show up? I have never even seen that before.

Wow, nice work MrToasty!

So we can be fairly sure now that IIAE is out to help GBJ rather than torment him? In which case, who left the box? Could it have been the 'she' that IIAE refers to?

EDIT: It seems that asking relevant questions of IIAE may help to drive the game on in the absence of updates from GBJ, then. I'll try to come up with something worthy.

Yes, it does seem clear that IIAE is trying to help, or at least prevent bad things. Although I'm not even more curious about the "Them" that keeps getting mentioned, as well as what the thing trying to possess GBJ is.

OK

I follow the
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
rename (r7 could indicate multiple rar files so I follow that)

I follow the
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Binary conversion

My question is what made you decide on
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
base 64 then Rot?

The string of characters with the = at the end was a giveaway for base 64. Position of capitals and punctuation suggested there wasn't any transposition involved and it looked backwards, so the easiest thing to start with was Caesarian shift.

The other thing is that while I like the idea of thirds, I think the open document on his computer is interesting. It seems to read something like, "Hey, it's me. I'm having the dream(?) again. I'm afraid it's happened(?) again" and then there is something after the line space that I can't make out.

This, from the 'Someone left me a box' video, is something that we haven't really followed up on. Can anyone get a better look at what's on the screen? If the above transcription is correct then does it point to GBJ being more aware of some of the more strange goings on than he seems willing to admit?

That would tie into the "He pretends to be happy" business nicely.
