Here's my problem with all of this. The film is labeled "scariest thing I ever saw". If Josh had seen the contents of this film, and it were indeed that scary, would he be going about his daily life as if no life changing scary thing had been discovered?

It even seems in the printout that Josh has no idea what he's got on the film--
"See I have the damn thing. What is it?"

Also, what's been puzzling me since this update yesterday:
We've been discussing whether or not it is Josh communicating with this Mysterio person. And now it seems like it is. But If this is the case, HOW exactly is he doing it. If he's accessing the system through the sim like we are, he must know the .REENTER device, how else could he use the sim to reply? Why is their conversation always ready to be printed? Is it just so that we can see what they are saying? Is there some way we can reply to the conversation?

I believe that this story will be about what happened to Josh's father, and what is on that film.

One thought I had was that even though the file is a .MP3 (Thus it was created recently) there's nothing stopping it from being an audio clip from years ago, or even possibly the super 8 film itself that was converted/recorded on .MP3.

Refining:

Okay, having listened to all 3 versions and really messed around with different sections individually this is what I've got:
Quote:

<click>
<click>

Speaker 1: "Sorry, didn't see you back there"

<slam>

Speaker 2: "If we had any, he can't play on it."

<tones>

Speaker 1: "You think there's any of that now?"
<scat>
Speaker 1: Ok, Bye..
<scat>
<click>

... Are those tones a shop counter (discussion between store person and speaker 1???)

Perhaps as I have been seeing it, Mysterioso and Josh's father worked together on trying to unravel the facts about what was seen in that super 8 film. For some reason, those who are "looking in the wrong place" (maybe the bad guys?) got a hold of Josh's dad and have been holding him to keep him from finding out what the government knows about this alien presence here. Since that time, his partner (Mysterioso) has been hiding to avoid capture and knows that Josh's dad left everything he had discovered until his disappearance in his wifes attic amongst old clothes and artifacts (the CL stuff). After her death, Josh cleans out the attic and finds the old clothes n stuff but uncovers the box with the film and the old computer drives etc..Josh is able to hook up the old terminal and this must alert Mysterioso that someone has found this old terminal as he has been monitoring for just such an event. (something may have reactivated)..
Being careful, he verifies that this is indeed his partners son Josh and he has discovered the hidden case files of his dads.. Now they will join to find him.. but at the same time, the bad guys are looking for someone to reactivate the computer too, but they are looking in the wrong place.

This sounds like the most probable so far. What if this is a recording of the people who "go underground"?

I honestly don't hear blue piano anywhere on it, plus I can only hear 2 tones not 4 (low,high), though I haven't slowed it down to check. Also the person speaking JUST before the tones has the same American ?drawl (is there a better term for it) as the "If we had any", so I think it's the same person....

upload is coming, its little less crappier MP3 than the original one, but ehh uploading is like driving in England (the wrong way) I dunno where to put it... brains come in three sizes large small and huh? HA URL inserted in original post Braincell rules.

Also male 2 has a slightly higher voice than male 1. Male 1 has a nice resonating bariton.

Hmmm, Add an attachment might have been easier? Anyway, I stick to my original point - I still don't hear blue piano and I can only hear 2 tones.

I'm getting something like:
Sorry, (I?) Didn't see him back there.
If we had any (It's blue?/Wouldn't you?/It wouldn't show?)
Blue (Camera/Piano?) (laying/playing?) on it.
Do you think there's any in back now/no?
(Ok then, sorry./ Ok, they're sending for us)

One more thing, has anything been done in the way of sound analysis been done on those two notes? I'd do it, but I'm not sure how, and I'm not on my home computer Smile
(By sound analysis I mean checking the frequencies, and possibly comparing them to a note scale and seeing what the two letters are?)

So, gave the mp3 a couple listen throughs and here is what I got:

Person 1: I'm sorry to see you back like this

Person 2: If we had anything, we'd know
Blue piano, *a few notes that sound like a keyboard* playing on it, do you think there is any background?

Person 1: Okay, I'm sorry

I'm torn between two ideas on what this is. One is that this is from a film project that Josh's father did with one of his friends. I'm definitely in the camp that Josh's dad was like on a hill overlooking what happened and filmed it on the super 8. If he did that then chances are he was into making his own movies. This could be part of the film he was making when the train crash happened (maybe the scene beforehand was in a coffee shop or someone's den/basement?).

But really I think it sounds an awful lot like discussing the actual production (like p1 is apologizing for piano music in the background), like the two people are discussing the filming. It reminds me of Marble Hornets actually. Talk about a twist if those two ARGs are actually one.

But either way I don't think this is Josh and Mysterio talking. Why would they record their conversation if they are trying to be super careful and discreet? If it sounded like a recorded phone call I would think that STIES is in fact the desktop of the people who are watching Josh and M. Since the voices are so clear I don't think there is anyway that this was recorded without the two people knowing (M seems waaaay too careful) if it was Josh and M. But then again I can't find a recording of the Evelyn Minker memorial fund recording so I'm not sure if one of the guys in this recording are the same as that one.

I'm also partial to thinking maybe this was part of the film that Josh (or whoever else) may have used to see how conversion would work. You can tell by Josh's blog that he is not the most tech saavy and in the interest of making the super 8 film digital (easier to share with M and easier to inspect maybe?) He'd try digitizing whatever little bit seemed least important (or maybe a scrap in the canister). Now that he's been at least partially successful maybe we can expect an extended trailer soon on STIES?
