Question received 09/7/2010:
ddl: What do you need us to do?
Response:
You seem trustworthy. I have a plan. I am currently engaged in genetic research that you can assist with. Stand by for further information.
Yay, something to do. Even if it does sound boring.
Also, dunno if anyone else noticed but they only seem to be picking questions from new people. 12 questions and not one by the same person.

yeah, I figured that. Also, a couple of my questions were ignored in favor of other folks asking a very similar question.

Jumping into say that is an incorrect statement.
I have been making attempts at question's since a few days after the query system opened up, and this was just the first one that got through.

I think what AzureWolf meant to say is that they are picking questions from different people each time. At least that's what I think he meant.

That's exactly what I meant, guess it wasn't clear.

I guess they're not taking queries any longer. It's been 6 days since any new responses and the query channel has been offline ever since.

site has been updated. I'm not sure how long it's been since I haven't checked in a few days.

You have asked queries. I have responded. I have trust.
Now I act.
eDNA is inherently unstable. I am currently engaged in an intensive eDNA genetic calculation. I cannot process it fast enough before it mutates.
The virus knows.
I need your help. We must work quickly.
There are 9985 genes remaining.
Logging in and typing genetics brings up
Quote:
Genetic manipulation: RRNQP => RBQPQ.
Genetics>>
So far everything I've tried gives "Invalid Command". It seems to me to be a substitution puzzle perhaps. There is a method of mutation called base substitution. Not sure how it could be applied here though.
ETA: The number of genes remaining appears to be a countdown of sorts. Refreshing my browser gave me a different number. Does not appear to be in minutes.

With 9950 remaining I get
BBPQB => PQPRN
ETA - typing any of the single letters (BNPQR) gives a new manipulation for the first part.
Quote:
Genetic manipulation: BBPQB => PQPRN.
Genetics>> q
Genetic manipulation: NNRQN => PQPRN.
Genetics>> b
Genetic manipulation: BBNRB => PQPRN.
Genetics>> p
Genetic manipulation: PBNRP => PQPRN.
Genetics>> p
Genetic manipulation: QBNRQ => PQPRN.
Genetics>> n
Genetic manipulation: RQQBN => PQPRN.
Genetics>> r
Genetic manipulation: RBQRN => PQPRN.
ETA2
Rules seem to be as follows.
Alphabetical order: BPQRN
'q'
all letters change
B<->N
P<->R
Q=Q
'p'
first and last letters change
P->Q
Q->R
R->N
N->B
B->P
'n'
letters shift position forward 3/back 2
'r'
second and fourth letters change
Q->B
B->R
R->P
P->N
N->Q
'b'
all letters change
N->B
R->N
Q->R
P->Q
B->P
ETA3
Solved one!

Nice!
Got one, too.

A nice straight forward but challenging puzzle.

Lazily trying more when I get a chance, scored another so far. So... we have to do 10,000 of these?!

I think "Edna" is working on them as well. I think it's a race against time. We'll probably need to do as many as possible and combined with the countdown we'll hopefully finish before something bad happens.
ETA: I've done about 5 or 6 now. I'm finding some sucess in using only the n and p commands. The last one I did took only 8 steps.

I created another account (ostensibly my wife's ) so I didn't have to wait 5 minutes...
ETA: I'll open this up a bit. I made a php script (web site) that brute forces a solution given a starting string and a goal. If you want access send me a PM. I'm not making this public because I don't want such a processor intensive site being public (read as I don't want my hosting company yelling at me).

Even with the script this is taking for ever. We've hardly put a dent in that 10,000
