I know there are a few of us!

I'm going to be downtown tomorrow evening and thought I'd try to hit at least two axons. Here's what I have so far:

"real" - 16:31
30.262757 -097.742165
San Jacinto & Cesar Chavez - TGI Friday?
512-473-0624
512-477-0142

pony_tail 17:13
30.264370 -097.744210
2nd & Congress
The payphone next to Tesoro Trading Company on Congress at 2nd St.
512-473-0798

pony_tail 17:23
30.266182 -097.743526
4th & Congress
The payphone by the Central Parking Systems lot on the northwest corner of 4th and Congress - it says "No incoming calls"; it LIES! Wink
512-477-0548

Are any of these locations repeats from last time, or was there just the Capitol one? Is anyone planning on being at any of these? I might be able to make the last two, but I'm wondering about the 17:23 location.

All times are in PST, so add two hours for our local time.

Edited in the locations of the phones we answered.

FWIW, I just called Spaghetti Warehouse and the guy there said they do have a payphone and have been getting strange random calls. Looks promising.

I'll be looking for the "real" axon tomorrow, hopefully. Smile

for the record, concerning "real" at 16:31 PST
i waited by the Dick's Deja Disco on the east side of San Jacinto for the twenty minutes surrounding 6:31 with no phone call. friday's does sounds like a better bet or possible a phone located somewhere in the parking garage?

We staked out the phones at the Four Seasons, and Jugglerobaby was at the phones in the adjacent building, to no avail. Looks like this was a bad location.

My Austin experience

Ok, I drove 2 hours to Austin on Saturday and got 3/6 axons. It felt nice to participate and to hear the phone messages; I live on the outskirts of Houston, and since there haven't been any axons there, I haven't made any hot until now. I saw no other players so I had the phones to myself which was nice, but it would have been cool to meet some others and help put our heads together on finding some of these axons. But in case people still want to find these, I hope some of my tips below are helpful. And I hope the longer post isn't minded, but I'm excited about experiencing my first axons! It was surreal hearing talk about bees on a payphone on the street in downtown Austin. Smile

I'll discuss where the hot axon locations were and more importantly where I think the other ones are. I used my GPS so I had pretty good positioning on my side. With that said, it appears that most of the axons target the nearest intersection as discussed in the forum, so you have to do some searching to find the nearest payphone. Luckily in many cases (at least here) they are in plain view.

Of the 3 I made hot, 2 of them were the same as described by Addlepated from the hivekuts page pony_tail axons: at Congress & 4th, and Congress & 2nd. They were pretty easy to spot, not far from the intersection, and convenient too. They are right next to pay parking lots, but you don't have to pay (when they're unstaffed anyway, they weren't on Saturday but this may be diffent on weekdays) because you can keep your car within sight from the payphone.

The third one I got based on my accumulated knowledge from past mistakes, as explained below. In my opinion, most of the payphones here are on the street and by the same provider (AT&T or something, I forget exactly). But once you've been to a few of them they are hard to miss.. you see them every 2 blocks or so in this area. So if you keep a lookout for one of these within a block of the intersection at the coordinates, it should be the right phone. That's what I did with my third hot axon: there was nothing at the coordinates intersection, but 2/3 of a block to the west on 5th (outside Antone's club), I saw the only payphone nearby like the other ones I'd seen. And sure enough, despite that it was closer to the other intersection to the west, it rang at 18:03 (8:03 p.m. local time.. it was almost dark by then!).

This knowledge came at the cost of a painful lesson at the 17:21 axon. I had seen the previous posts about this location, where players were looking in nearby businesses like the Four Seasons Hotel, but that just seemed too far from the intersection. True, its address may be at the street but my hunch was that wasn't it. But what I didn't realize is that there *is* a payphone nearby, also about 2/3 of a block away. I just wasn't looking that far away. I had checked a few of the nearby buildings but I really should have made more time to scope out the area. So anyway by 17:21 I was scrambling, and finally checked inside a small mexican restaurant on the NE corner of the intersection. I specifically asked if they had a payphone, and they said no but there is one up the street. So I ran to it but I was already 2 minutes too late, unfortunately, but at least I learned from it and that helped me get 18:03. But as for 17:21, I bet if other players try that payphone later, it will be the right one.

As for the other 2 I didn't get, 16:31 at Congress & 8th is a mystery to me. It had a phone not far from the corner on the NW side of it, and it appeared to be the only payphone nearby, but I was there 5 min. early and the phone didn't ring during the 10 min. I stayed. I even picked up the reciever a few times near 16:31 in case the ring wasn't audible, but no Melissa on the other end, just a dial tone. (The other 3 phones rang moderately loud, an electronic ring.) And the other one I didn't get was in the State Capitol building. I didn't get to Austin quite in time for that one, plus it involves much more walking than any of the other axons since you can't normally park anywhere near the Capitol.. security and all. But I went in later and did find what is sure to be the right phone. There don't appear to be any payphones outside nearby. But inside the Capitol building (which is what the coordinates indicate), if you go in the doors at the west entrance and take your first left corridor, there is a small corner with a single payphone. There are actually partitions for 3 phones, but only one there.

Finally, I thought I'd share the locations of the axons I made hot. I used my GPS to mark the locations so these are more accurate than the "address" locations. They are:

10:01 4th & Congress 30.266567 97.743617
12:09 2nd & Congress 30.264517 97.744017
18:03 west of 5th & Colorado 30.267567 97.744983

Well, I hope you enjoyed hearing about my experience. I had fun and it was worth the trip from out of town. I also did some biking while there (I used that as my transportation for the later day coordinates to avoid parking hassles) but the steep hills in Austin reminded me that my body is not as young as it used to be. Razz But being thirtysomething isn't all bad.. I can make a cool roadtrip like this and not worry about skipping class or neglecting homework! That's all for now. Smile

Ken

Just a quick note - the payphone that you said you missed, was that the one outside of Dick's Disco? Cause if it was, someone said they tried that one and it didn't ring.

17:21 axon

I didn't look for a nearby business, so I'm not sure if the phone on the street near this intersection was near Deja Dick's Disco or not. But the phone I saw is mounted on a brick wall on San Jacinto St. on the east side of the street, about 2/3 of a block north of the intersection with Cesar Chavez St. The phone is actually closer to the San Jacinto and 2nd St. intersection. But that may not matter, as the 18:03 axon was similarly distant.

An added note about 18:03 - I chuckled to myself when hearing hey_bev on the phone since it wasn't live until that day. Jan told Bev she hears that the sprinkler system really puts out.. and I do programming on software for fire sprinkler systems, among other applications. Smile

FYI, the phone at 8th and congress is on the north west corner. by the restaurant and very close to an ATM. i answered a call there last week. BTW, i believe i saw you at the fouth and congress yesterday (saturday right afternoon), i was at UT for test course, got out for lunch and though i had time to get that axon hot, but couldn't find a parking place, but i saw someone pacing the phone just a minute prior to the call. guess that was you.

Yeah, I think that's the one, just a little up from the Mexican restaurant. I didn't personally try it, but someone else specifically mentioned they staked it out to no avail. I did try calling it and it rang, so it takes incoming calls. Confused

Alright, I've definitely been among the lurkers too long. If someone from Houston came down and got 3/6 Axons, I definitely have no excuse to sit idle. So I'll be keeping watch on this thread from now on and try to meet up with other Beekeepers when the opportunity arises.

So...are any of the new "previewed" axons in our area?

Edit: Found Darkforge's nice list. The following axons are in/near Austin:

1) 09:07 PDT 30.266182 -97.743526 (NW corner 4th & Congress)
2) 09:27 PDT 30.274933 -97.741183 (Capital building, west end)
3) 10:57 PDT 30.26437 -97.74421 (2nd & Congress next to Tesora Trading Co.)
4) 16:33 PDT 30.262757 -97.742165 (San Jacinto & Cesar Chavez)
5) 17:01 PDT 30.267528 -97.744512 (west of 5th and Colorado, outside Antone's)

Too bad these don't start until the 28th; I would have liked to have a Saturday free to just activate axons. However, I should be able to make the 9:27 one...I reconnoitered that one earlier, back before we even knew they were payphones, so I know exactly where to park. Wink

got a couple of axons hot today, 5th and congress and the capitol. i though i'd finally figured out where the elusive San Jacinto & Cesar Chavez axon was, but no luck. i waited at a payphone in San Jacinto Center (it was practically in a closet and it's about as close to the intersection as the one by Dicks Deja Disco, maybe even closer). no rings. (the phone does work though). there is no payphone in the mexican restaurant. my only other suggestion is trying somewhere in the parking garage on the northwest corner. any suggestions?

I'm going to try and make it to at least one of the axons on Tuesday...complete with digital camera. I'll also try and take a look around this weekend and see if I can find other possibilites for our elusive axons. Any other Austin area axon hunters going downtown on Tuesday, post here so we can get together!
