 		London Axon Fun Part 2!
Well, I went back to London today, to try again. I met up with Flidget, and was informed that Fi and danhon were stuck on the trains, so it looked like it was up to us! I decided to take the phone just round the corner from the GPS point, on Shaftesbury Ave. Flidget elected to stick with the two phones closest to the GPS point. As I waited (not getting bothered by foreigners this time!) and as time ticked steadily closer to 18:07 (local time) my phone booth door opened, and there were two guys who are regular lurkers here on the unforums (sorry guys, can't remember your names Embarassed ) Props to them both, they came into London from Southampton! Anyway, they went to cover the two booths across Shaftesbury Avenue. Well, the upshot was that no phones rang, and so we had a little scout around to see what else was available.

The map below (which you'll need to download to see clearly) shows phone's we've tried (in yellow), phone's which don't take incoming calls (in green) and any other phones (in purple) that are near to the GPS location (which is the red dot) (though personally I think it's a bit of a stretch to expect those to be called).

I'd try to reverse engineer the GPS coordinates from an address, but I can't find a website that will give me 6 decimal place precision for a UK address. If anyone can find one - please let me know!

Thanks to all who showed up, I'm afraid I won't be going back there now, I really have no idea where the phone could be, plus I'll get hit by the congestion charge during the week, and I think I've spent enough on parking as it is so far!

 		Malrog & Co - Remember it could be inside a business. Or inside a tube station (although the one I see on your map looks pretty far away). Or it could simply be wrong. So be detailed in your reports of what has failed.

Also - yay! somebody got calculus this afternoon!
In which, if I'm not mistaken, they're talking about Enigma - the terrible choice the Allies had of letting some bad things happen so they didn't reveal to the Germans that their codes had been broken. And apparently that's what happened at Harmony and Troy.

 		It could be in a business, this is true, but there are just SO many shops around. There's a Subway pretty much where the GPS coordinates are, and there's a pub next door, but neither of those had a payphone that we could see.

Tube station is an interesting idea, but I don't think it'll float, given that, as you say, all the tube stations are a fair distance away, and I don't think any of them extend that far underground (and no, I'm not gonna go walking along the train tracks to find some abandoned payphone that was installed for the workers to use when they were building the tunnels) Smile

PS. I can't access chat, which is really annoying, as I'd quite like to find a willing American who would call one of the payphones at the Axon (I have the number) to test whether or not they will receive international calls. Any Americans reading this who would like to call a random payphone in London, please PM me and I'll PM you back with the payphone number.

Edit: Added strike tags, to prevent a PM barrage, as I managed to find a willing volunteer (see post below).

If it's in a shop we're doomed, since shops in England close by six. We did check out all the pubs, coffee bars and restaurants in the area but none of them had payphones (or people behind the counter giving their private phones a creeped-out look).

We also got the address of the payphones and at least according to multimap they match the coordinates exactly. It's not like that '30 phones in one mall with the same address' nightmare situation either, the shops in this area are tiny and densely packed, so having a street number really narrows it down.

I got my best friend to call the phone from the US and she did say she couldn't get through, but we also dialed the operator to check and he said the phones could receive international calls, which is why having a third opinion on this would be really appreciated.

For what it's worth, I'll be heading back there tomorrow to try again.

14:17 PDT Calculus axon is smoking hot, baby!!!

Location: Franklin Square Lake Success, Long Island, NY, near the border of Queens.
GPS location: Between Iris Ln and Aster Ln at the Hess mart on the south side of Northern Blvd (25A).

I went alone; most of the people I knew personally were unavailable for various reasons. I arrived at about 5:00 PM local time after braving heavy Long Island traffic. As soon as I got to the spot, I could see the target; one lone payphone in plain view of the road by a gas station. The entire south side of the road was taken up by a gas station, and across the street were a car rental agency and a car dealership - unlikely targets. The coordinates, as reported by Mapquest, were spot-on perfect as far as I can tell, and since there was no one else with me, there was no point in searching around. First I checked if the phone worked by dialing 1-800-MATTRES - it did, and I hung up on the poor mattress saleman on the end. What can I say, their advertising is so ever present and effective it was the first 800 number that popped into my head. Then I whipped out my cell phone to check if it accepted calls - the weird ringing noise it emitted told me that this was definitely the one.

I had 15 minutes to kill; I bought a Snapple from the gas station, so they would think of me as a patron of their business, rather than a strange guy in a black trenchcoat hovering around their pay phone. After drinking the Snapple, I had more time to kill and a pay phone to guard, so I used the pay phone to call my credit card company. Seems I'm slightly overlimit. Urghhh. With about five minutes to go, I hung up and pulled out my cell phone. I chatted with my friend Jerry for a bit, who had been to one of the Axons from the first wave that seemed to point to an Ethiopian church. Still no beekeepers in sight (Long Island beekeepers, where were you people?).

At the appointed time, the phone rang, just as I knew it would. They asked for the Captain's last name to make sure I was one of her crew; "Greene" I replied, and waited. And that's when I heard the terrible calculus you can hear now at http://transmit.ilovebees.com/outbound/calculus.wav

I repeated a few times, but there was no one there to share it with. Satisfied with my success, I told the Operator to continue, and she told me about my crappy hardware and how much she loved bees, and hung up. Wonder if the 777 mark will make continues possible... I doubt it.

The moment I got back in my car, I gave a whoop of victory. An axon hot, a wave file activated, and it was all my doing. w00t!!!!!

Well, further to my inability to get onto chat (seems there's some servers down) I've managed to get into #beekeepers by downloading mIRC. Anyway, with the able assistance of Beowulf (thanks!!) I was able to confirm that the UK payphone we called (which is one of the ones right by the coordinates) DOES accept international calls. So that's not the reason for it not ringing Sad

To Flidget, who may be surprised by this info, when dialing from the US they need to put 01144 at the beginning, not 0044.

Oh, and congrats to XStryker, nice work, I wish the London payphones had been as easy. And I really thought it would be, given that there are 2 payphones right at the GPS coordinates. *sigh*

 		Hi!

New to all this, just caught up with all the.wavs. Great fun!!

I work just round the corner from the axon location ( I think - I'm not sure exactly wher it is, despite a rigrous search - but I'm two minutes from the junction of Old Compton and Shaftesbury) So, if someone would be so kind, let me know where you lot are meeting tomorrow - Monday 20th, (in the Costas?) but more importantly WHAT TIME???

. . . . . I wonder if I should go back tomorrow at lunch and ask that chef uniform shop if their caller ID registered any wierd anonymous calls over the weekend. . . .

As far as we can tell the axon's just south of that intersection. I'm not quite sure when I'll be showing up tomorrow. I finish work early, so I may grab an early dinner first before showtime. Want me to PM you my mobile so we can at least coordinate?

 		I notice that the time is listed as PDT, which I believe means that instead of London being +8 hours of the US west coast, it would be +7. This might mean that the London folks are in the right area, but just at the wrong time. So if anyone could get there an hour earlier, it might work out.
