Yup - a shy finder, though.

Is it Texas because of the stars? I presume it is I-35 for the marks on the wall, and 180 for the 'time' on the clock (there is a rest area recorded at mile 179).

Sorry

Guys, I wasn't able to make the event I signed up to do. I'm really sorry. I hope that everything else goes smoothly for you.

My local paper did an article on the number I found. The first paragraph is sorta funny though...

Quote:
The Chesterton mom doesn't experiment with any fancy gadgets, owns no treasure map and spends her afternoons reading to her 7-year-old daughter, not solving riddles.

Hrm, something about that doesn't seem quite accurate Wink

an update on the news site gives me an excuse to bump our thread:
http://gustwintig.com/news/2010/6/17/replaceable.html

We can also ponder the definitions of "alternate reality" when they post things like that article -- no, I did not find an external source for the Journal of the Society of Theoretical Cryptoarcheology -- and when they stay so committed to keeping in character with their updates and responses in the blog comments.

There have been a few more updates to the main site at http://gustwintig.com which might be taken to be hints. Some also popped up as tweets on http://twitter.com/gustwintig (but we think the re-tweets are an abberation)

I tried to transcribe the latest image from http://gustwintig.com/news/2010/6/28/primary-secondary.html
Quote:
... and I fear Mrs Baboon shall be eating no more
porridge, at least not this fortnight! Yoicks!
Eftsoons we returned to the upper carriage,
whereupon we found ourselves twixt a wigged mariner
and a lass of great pungeance. I pleaded with
the quartermaster to eject them from the premises,
but apparently they had paid their fair like everyone
else, "the rights of humanity," etc. etc. I suppose
these are the risks one takes when one journeys
out to the queen's wider embrace. My nose filled
with odors most foul, and my qunicepaste went
unate, and I was on the verge of heading back
belowdecks -- when I heard the mariner addressing
the lass. "Ye like the twinklies, miss?" he said --
I suppose this was his form of courtship. "I just
seen a green sparkle bright enough to blind a Duke."
I rolled my eyes and sighed loudly, but the ragged
miss seemed intrigued. He went on: "A whole clock
of 'em, I mean. From all over. And now mine,
mine and me men. The twelve of us, one number
each. And the twelve itself -- ay, miss, tis some-
thing to see, full of swoops and beasts and all
crusty with em'ralds. A bauble like this could win me
any lady I wish -- and here I am with ye!"
I snorted conspicuously, conveying my disbelief of
his preposterous story and even more preposterous
wig, and left the dining cabin. I returned to
my cot and began to braid the flowing locks of
my dolly, whereupon the sloop's heaving turned my
...

There are definitely a few nonsense words in there. There may be some misspelled words in there -- aside from any typos of my own, some words just look wrong in their original, whether deliberate or otherwise. I think "my qunicepaste went unate" is trying to be old-timey but is just saying his belly went bonkers.

(later edit to add)
another update today added a side contest for creativity...

Los Angeles book event TONIGHT
for Clock without a Face

Is there anyone available in Los Angeles to attend a book event in the next hour?

per http://twitter.com/GusTwintig
Quote:
Los Angeles: tonight, Skylight Books, 7:30, Barnett & Horowitz, "Sloppy Sleuthing and Other P.I. Boo-Boos."

This is in reference to this news entry:
Quote:
Los Angeles, on Wednesday the 14th — Skylight Books, 7:30, free. Costumes are not encouraged, but they are not forbidden either.

Details on http://www.skylightbooks.com/event
Quote:

ELI HOROWITZ and MAC BARNETT discuss and sign their young adult mystery/puzzle book "THE CLOCK WITHOUT A FACE"
Start: 7:30 pm
End: 9:30 pm

The Clock Without a Face (McSweeney's)

An event for this new eye-catching, pentagonal mystery/puzzle/board book, featuring Eli Horowitz and Mac Barnett, two of the book's authors.

Twelve emerald-studded numbers, each handmade and one of a
kind, have been buried in 12 holes across the land. These treasures will belong
to whoever digs them up first. The question: Where to dig? The only path to the
answer: solve the riddle of the book.

Eli Horowitz has edited and designed books and journals for McSweeney's for the past eight years. Before McSweeney's, Eli was employed as a carpenter and wrote science trivia questions tenuously linked to popular films. He was born in Virginia and now lives in San Francisco.

Mac Barnett: Born to non-farmers in a California farming community, Mac now lives near San Francisco. He's on the board of directors of 826LA, a nonprofit writing center for students in Los Angeles, and he founded
the Echo Park Time Travel Mart, a convenience store for time travelers.

Adam Rex

This maybe deserves its own thread, but I've been keeping an eye on Adam Rex's blog in relation to the Clock Without a Face. Today it looks like Mr. Rex is starting a bit of an alternate reality story tied to his new book, Fat Vampire

http://adamrex.blogspot.com/2010/07/message-from-adams-dad.html

Quote:
Hi, this is Adam's dad.

If you read this blog then you're probably already aware of some of the stories getting around about him, but I want to set the record straight.

Adam was last seen at the Phoenix Book Festival in the company of what I'm told was "a fair-skinned and darkly beautiful young copyeditor." She approached him after his signing and professed to be a big fan and brushed her slender hand against his. Phoenix in July is pretty warm, and Adam was heard to whisper that he could not account for the fractal chill that spread in his breast.

He's always talking like that–you should have heard him when he was a teenager.

According to eyewitnesses he walked off with the beautiful copyeditor after she remarked that she wanted to share with him her "dark embrace."

"Ha!" he was heard to say as they left. "For a moment I thought you said your 'dork embrace.' Huh…that would be a funny premise for a book."

He hasn't been seen since.

If anyone has any information, we'd appreciate it. He was supposed to come over last night for Jenga.

Confirming clues?

I did not notice any confirming clues from floor 4 at the rest area where I found the 1, such as correspondences in the illustrations to buildings, landmarks, businesses, streets, or communities. Did any other finders (or anyone) see anything like that at the treasure sites?

I have a theory where one is. Does anyone live in Delaware and can get it for me in return for something?
