Hey guys, haven't played any Args that much recently (college/work) but I've kept track of the last few ones. Anyway I was hoping on jumping in on this one since its just starting up (hopefully).

Anyway so far I have to say great job with the script, and I feel it is a bit odd that they reverted what we have done so far with the puzzles. I tend to agree with Nighthawk, I think we're just missing something.

If they do indeed expect us to actually do 10000 of these puzzles, they will be sorely disappointed. Those dedicated to this simply won't have the time (unless we cheat) and honestly it's just plain unrealistic if they plan on dragging this out to attract people to the arg.

In the mean time I'll work on a few puzzles still and see if I can work anything out.

Btw is there any IRC for this at the moment? like a webchat.quakenet.org #darkspore channel? It might prove useful if these puzzles get harder.

Heh I was kind of interested to see if you'd get a reaction out of the script. It did kind of force the hand of the PMs. I'm sure they weren't ready for it to be solved yet (or at all)

I wonder if "outsider" is a reference to the virus. As the virus spreads, we'll see more text begin to become corrupted. In that case, 10,000 puzzle just may very well be a herring.

This.

Traditionally, Unfiction uses chat-solutions IRC. I went ahead and registered #darkspore so we can use it. My sleeping schedule has been kinda crazy lately so I'll probably be on for the next couple hours or so.

I'm not sure it was a reaction. In the past they've automated things quite a bit. It may be that once we reached a certain threshold, say 9300, it automatically added 170~ to the total and triggered the degradation of the message as well as the warning. The only concrete evidence we have of doing something they didn't want is the slap-on-the-wrist deletion of Nighthawk's extra accounts.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Around 7:30 PM EST on Thursday, an IP address tracing back to EA clicked the link to my hackedna script. If it really bothered them I would have expected an email or something.

I'm thinking this is the case, I'm also guessing it's coded to trigger at certain thresholds like I mentioned above. Wonder if we can get it back to 9300 if this will happen again. I'm also very curious what happens if you use up your 100 attempts.

ETA:
Quote:
0 operations remaining. Genes mutated
New calculation required.
Genetic manipulation: BPQBB => RPRPQ.
Instability in 100 operations.

So far as I can tell no ill effects from failing.

ETA2: I made some ease of use updates to my helpedna eDNA Solver

A small part of me is tempted to kick it off again, but it does seem obvious that they don't want that sort of thing.

I'm tempted to have it running for ONE account... It would take *only* 32 days to complete... Rolling Eyes

I don't think it's a matter of anger on their part... They should expect someone to try this, and I hardly consider this "hacking" or "brute forcing" a solution (especially if I have to wait 5 minutes after each attempt).

I think it's just a means by which they control the time it takes, slow down the game.

But if they expect that people are going to go through this amount of work for this long a time, got news for them... It's been almost a week and we've only gotten through 700!

Status update to people who haven't been following along:

HelpEdna.com is host to an artificial intelligence that's currently trying to do some complicated DNA calculations, and needs our help. What an you do?

-REGISTER for the site by typing "login" at the command prompt. Now type "new." It will ask you for a username and password to enter for future logins.

-TYPE "GENETIC" and you'll get the puzzle. By typing certain letters, you can shift the beginning code to get it closer to the end code.

-STUCK? AzureWolf, awesome fellow that he is, created an applet that will tell you the solution to practically any combo. Go to http://peachmonkey.net/hackedna.php

-REPEAT AS NECESSARY. Sadly, the Powers that Be make you wait about 5 minutes between solutions -- that's why we need your help.

its possible, that since you have to log in, they are tracking how many you do, and maybe its just something to fill time for a month or two for some reason

for some reason, when i started to input the solution for one genetic puzzle, my operations count jumped from 100 to 443...

another finding: whe you type qr, np, rb or bn after genetic, the computer accepts the input and the operations count go down by one but nothing else happens...

I would almost prefer dead silence and a self-imposed "hiatus" compared to this.

And, yes, they are tracking who does them... They explicitly deleted the accounts that I created for my process, but did not delete my own (which I used for testing) even though it was in the same domain and from the same IP address. So they knew exactly which account was the culprit.
