Chicago Police investigators on Friday said a house fire that killed the son of the late alderman and congressman Roman Pucinski did not appear to have been intentionally set.

While police continue investigating, the exact cause of the Thursday fire that claimed the life of Christopher Pucinski may never be known, a fire official said.

"The Chicago Fire Department has ruled the cause of the fire undetermined," said spokesman Larry Langford. "The amount and type of flammables within the structure make it difficult to determine what did or did not contribute to the start and spread of the fire. If new information becomes available, the department will review its findings."

The fire broke out in the Pucinski family home in the 6300 block of Louise Avenue about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. Pucinski, 48, was found on the second floor.

The cause of death was still pending the outcome of a police and fire investigation, said a spokesman for the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Several chemicals and items Pucinski apparently used to build rocket motors were found in the lower level of the home, said Chicago Police spokeswoman Monique Bond.

Pucinski, who was single and unemployed, had lived in the family home alone since his father died in 2002. He is the brother of Aurelia Pucinski, the former clerk of the Circuit Court who is now a judge.

Pucinski was said to be a rocket enthusiast and a "kid at heart."

New postcard theory that I don't think is too much of an epileptic tree:

Way, way back when, at least one poster suggested that "Land of Ashen Waste" reminded them of the Valley of Ashes from The Great Gatsby. For some reason, I don't think anybody ever picked that up and ran with it.

The thing is, the Valley of Ashes was a real place that has since been rehabilitated into a location that is easily accessible and in which they wouldn't be out of place shooting video: Flushing Meadows.

The very first Google hit I get for "ashen wasteland" "new jersey" is a pointer toward that location, which works in its favor. (I know it's not in NJ, but I was doing a search strictly from the clues available to us.) Several hits just for "ashen wasteland" point back to Gatsby, suggesting that they might have thought we would find it pretty quickly. Is it possible we were overthinking this all along? Or have I gone off the deep end without realizing it?
