[SPEC] We have a timeframe!!!

This may be trout, but I think that it deserves explicit statement:

We now know EXACTLY when the wavs take place - immediatly before, during, and after the glassing of Reach. This is as per the first new wav "On_Reach."

That being said, what relevance to ILB does that timeframe have?

We have the curious time gap between Melissia's memory of Reach burning and their breakout into subluner orbit (which Greene doesn't seem to have reported to GOM.) Then there is how many days later till the official announcement was made?

So far it's been assumed that Melissa arriving in our time coincided with the Apocalypso's near earth arrival. Maybe this proves that it doesn't. It seems to be that it could be: the Apocalypso arrives, Reach gets glassed, THEN something happens that sends Melissa back to our time. Maybe a Covenant attack?

Don't interpret that "Reach burning" as the final assault on Reach; I think it was a metaphor.

The exact quote was "Reach burning in the darkness like a lantern of hope, dockyard after dockyard buzzing with worker /// drones..." (quoted from here. A planet on fire isn't best described as a lantern of hope. Also, workers in the dockyard wouldn't be doing routine hull-patching during a full-fledged attack; Apocalypso would either be left untended (as was the Circumference in Fall of Reach) or scrambled for combat duty.

Remember that heavily urbanised areas on a planet show up as lighted areas against the dark ground. Astronauts and cosmonauts have commented on that a lot over the years, and even made reference to lanterns floating on a dark sea. I think Melissa is reflecting upon her last refit in the Reach dockyards with fondness, looking at the city lights far below as a sign of human industry and determination to resist against all odds.

It's entirely possible, even most plausible in my opinion, that Apocalypso was nowhere near Reach when it fell.

-- Steve thinks this simplifies the timeframe enormously.

Thanks Steve, I did not tie all those broken bits of memory into one coherent whole. That does indeed put a different complextion on the matter.

But that also means it is unlikely that they picked up Guilty Spark??

EDIT: removed smerky remark, sorry

timeline "reach burning like a beacon of hope

I agree with Steve. And I am positive that is all one memory segment. The sentence "Reach burning like a beacon of hope" could only be said by a human ai (Melissa) before Reach fell.

Based on the waves we heard today doesn't it seem most likely that the Apocalypso crashed before Reach fell? I realize that the time frame isn't perfect-- but we do know that Durga appeared first (when the power interrupt occured which we relate to the crash as the only cause we have heard so far) and sometime later Reach fell.

This is from the Jersey waves we heard today - Reach falls, Jersey asks durga to bring his dad home. When she refuses, Jersey reminds her of previous interactions regarding money, which we have heard in other waves. So Durga was on Earth prior to Reach falling.

Also, it is my understanding that Reach wasn't glassed, it was actually invaded as the Covenant were searching for a forerunner artifact.

This leads me to a question that has been bothering me for a long, long time: what are the bits of sapphire and ruby that the Widow finds in the Widow's Journey?? I know we don't know yet.

Allow me to put on my "Miracle Max" voice; Reach is "mostly glassed." The Covenant deliberately missed a spot in their systematic bombardment of the planet, said spot containing the Holy Light. It also happened to contain the SPARTAN home base, something that made their archeological dig a bit more perilous than the Prophets had counted on...

It should be noted that the Holy Light, the Forerunner crystal found on Reach, was described as giving off sapphire-coloured light. The Widow found a scrap of sapphire and a piece of ruby... and the navigational coordinates for Reach and for Halo were found on rubies retrieved from Sigma Octanus IV.

Dun dun dunnnnnn.....

So did SPDR find and write to ruby Forerunner crystals when searching for the leftover bits of Melissa? Is that what the tire-shaped Artifact contains? Does the Sleeping Princess come from the sapphire, which was not marked as the Queen's property but noted by the Widow?

Can I squeeze in any more questions?

-- Steve encourages you to tune in tomorrow for the next thrilling episode.

Also, it couldn't have happened right away because James was a former ally of Master Chief. If it took him within a month to recooperate and become the man he is that we hear, that's a miracle... especially with the fact that he is now a civilian and not a SPARTAN personnel. They heal fast, but mentally recooperation can't be that incredibly fast.

The "sapphire" and "ruby" are computer system components. Look at the Widow's Journey / Computer Text Comparison on the wiki. What the story calls "a chip of precious ruby from the Queen's crown", the command dump calls "host sector 0" (or rather, SPDR chooses to call it that.) The Sapphire doesn't have an equivalent in the command dump, but it's sufficiently similar in the story that it's probably host sector 1 or some such. SPDR is tracking Melissa's core program by following traces of the directory. They are referred to as gemstones, rather than the "broken blocks" that SPDR labels as tertiary, because they are more important to SPDR.

What did I miss?

What solidified that time line for you, Theorizer. For me, it was the mention of Jericho III that set the timeline for me.

But, that definitely means that Kamal's sister was not a SPARTAN-II.

Also, there's the interesting little thing about James James being a SPARTAN. I have had time to catch up on all the new axons, so I can't really SPEC on that yet. Just wanting to leave the door open to others, cause it probably has strong relevance to the story.

Anyway, better get on that wav listing so I don't sound like a black bear fishing for trout, see you all.
