Your opinion
some more filosophical questions about ARGs

Hi all

My name is Annica and I am a student at Hyper Island, Stockholm. Me and some fellow students are working on our final project in collaboration with a company that is developing a new ARG. I am a gamer but new to this genre and would greatly appreciate your input into some of the thoughts and ideas what we are tossing around.
I hope that these questions and your answers can be interesting for this community to discuss as well as for us to read. And as I try to get into the mindset, I am more interested in they WHY behind your answer rather then just yes or no, but anything you have the time to give is awesome. And if you are up for it please send me a PM and we could perhaps take a discussion over Skype or chat.

So, here we go!

* What would be more important for you; that the game feels real or that it looks fantastic?

* Has there been a game that has greatly disappointed you, and if so, why?

* For you, are the social aspects of communities and forums something you use because you have to, or do you think it ads something to your gaming experience?

* If all the ARGs that you have ever played where active at the same time, but you could only play one - which one would it be?

I think I'll stop there for now, might add a few more questions later.

/Annica

What's more important...
That the game looks fantastic, without question. When ARGs start focusing too much on looking real, you start running into questions of whether it will be perceived as a hoax. And if something's a hoax, people aren't opting in to the game, so they're not really playing in the first place.

Has there been a game....greatly disappointed...
Yes. I tend to get disappointed the most if games fail to manage the players' expectations. Although it's still nice to insert a little bit of surprise and mystery into your story, players should be able to tell fairly early on: (a) what kind of story they're getting involved with; (b) how frequently the game will be updating; and (c) what their goal is.

are...communities and forums something you use because you have to....
It depends on the game. Nine times out of ten, the community that forms around a game is one of the most enjoyable part of the experience, as the players and developers get involved in what Sean Stewart refers to as a dance. One time out of ten the players step on my toes, the other one time out of ten it's the developers who step on my toes (sorry for the overextended analogy).

One Game to Rule them All (paraphrased)
...yeah, I'm not sure I can answer that. Either Chain Factor for really integrating the various elements of the story together seamlessly (and making it accessible for the casual player) or Must Love Robots for being almost unwholesomely fun and lighthearted without sacrificing story development for it.

I do wish I was around for I Love Bees, or Last Call Poker, as those were two games that look like they had a really strong sense of community from a large group of players. Axon enhottenating (ILB) and Graveyard Poker (LCP) in particular sounded like they would have been a blast to do as a group.

* What would be more important for you; that the game feels real or that it looks fantastic?
- that is stays CONSISTENT in look & feel. It looks consistent with the characters & the story. I like TINAG (the characters do not know they are fictional, they think they are real and we, the players, treat them as real).

* Has there been a game that has greatly disappointed you, and if so, why?
- any game that is delivered half-assed on the fly. Have a plan, have an outline, and if you make a promise, deliver. Don't impload.

* For you, are the social aspects of communities and forums something you use because you have to, or do you think it ads something to your gaming experience?
- Heck YES! sharing the story is one of the best parts of playing ARG. Otherwise its just like reading abook or watching a movie all by yourself. Plus, lots of the puzzles I'd never be able to solve on my own. And when I do help in a solve, it's a great feeling you're helping out other folks.

* If all the ARGs that you have ever played where active at the same time, but you could only play one - which one would it be?
- my top list: Chasing the Wish (my first), Sammeeeees (1 & 2), Last Call Poker.
