[INFO] Gilly echoes the Operator's Monologue?

From "bang.wav"

Gillie: Sooner... or later... life gets the drop on you, kid. Bang.

From "The Operator's Monologue"

SURPRISE! Look up and smile, honey. Bang! Bang! Bang!
Got the drop on you that time, sweetheart.

-----

It strikes me as odd, because when I heard that bit from Gilly I knew we had heard it before, paraphrased. I also don't think this is the first time we've had dialogue from a character echo something from the Operator's Monologue.

That struck me, too. Who knows if it'll turn out to be relevant, but it was an interesting echo, to be sure.

Does anyone else recall other times this has happened? I'm pretty sure this is not the first time an character from the WAV's has echoed the monologue. I've never understood the significance of this fact though.

in cases like 'get the drop on you' it could just be a particular phrasing that the PM author of both texts uses a lot. it's a bit of a giveaway if so. however, given the extensive care that has gone into all this, it's a little more likely that they intentionally use the same phrasing...

Here we go again ---

In "dream_child.wav":

Jan: "So what's even me? So what's not just Spartan I voodoo potion?"

In the emails from SP:

have any enemies
voodoo witch voodoo parents
voodoo witch that runs into the web
voodoo parents wanted to cover all my
together a home the forte of voodoo parents of mine
voodoo parents keep me

---------

Wouldn't have been remarkable except for the parent/child aspect of the conversation. Could be yet another conincidence, I admit, but they do sorta stand out.

Razz

the other possibility is simply that because these are memories that Melissa is broadcasting, her dialogues in the past may have 'subconsiously' used phrases or visuals and such from these memories, not knowing the connection...
and still the other possibility that the PM's like certain phrases... *cough* '7'... so repetition doesn't necessarily mean anything significant...

we'll find out soon...

i don't think those dialogues occured in "the past" for melissa, they happened after she left the 26th century, they're being recorded in "real time" well, future real time... and transmitted to us:

so the 26th century is advancing forward in time along with us, that's how we're able to hear reports of the Apololypso crash "after" it happened

that works with phrases such as Jersey asking Durga, "So how's the weekly eavesdropping soap opera going this week?"

we also get our eavesdroppings once per week.

If Melissa is getting her info streamed to her from the future at a constant time differential, think about what just happened and what is just about to happen. Reach just went bye bye. What does that mean? It means The Pillar of Autumn just made their "random" jump to Halo. The Master Chief John-117 is possibly being thawed out as we speak and getting ready to cause some trouble on Halo. This should make for some very interesting wavs in the next few weeks.[/SPEC]

that's a good point... cool... if you think about it, First Strike takes place 3 weeks after Halo explodes... I'm in the middle of reading First Strike, but do you think that we'll be passing through the actual time period of the 3rd novel from here until Halo 2 releases, so the end of ilovebees/First Strike really is the beginning of Halo 2? On a real-world timeline?...

"creepy..."

On the subject of the future timeline coinciding with the present timeline...

In First Strike, we see that UNSC High Command doesn't find out Reach was glassed until September 4, 2552. If, in fact, Melissa is getting her information streamed to her, then that means that the population of Earth didn't find out Reach was glassed until 2 and a half weeks after it happened. This information might be relevant in other [SPEC]s, too.

An interesting tidbit: the UNSC High Com Facility had been nicknamed "the Hive."

I agree that the dialogs are occuring in "real time" in the 26th century, BUT that doesn't mean Melissa just learned about our pals Jan, Kamal, Jersey, et al through the dialogs we are hearing now. She could have had lots of data on them before the crash into the 21st century... perhaps she was even observing them for some ONI reason. Then, the crash happened, names and sayings got mixed up in Melissa's memory, and out spews a bunch of fragmented memories that she's "heard" before but cannot place.

Besides, whoever is transmitting these dialogs to her, there's got to be a reason. I doubt the transmitter just picked Jan, Kamal, and Jersey totally at random (well, maybe Jersey if the transmitter is Durga, since she said it was by accident that she landed on his comp).

Thus, I still find it very likely that these "echoes" are not coincidences and that:
1. Melissa knew of Jan, Kamal, and Jersey et al BEFORE the crash.
2. After the crash, her memories were fragmented and partially erased, so only bits and parts come out and she's not sure if they're her own or not. Very very confused Operator.

[SPEC wild="100%"]
Couldn't it be possible that, with the time delay on getting the report back that Reach is gone and that information reaching the general public, that the Apocalypso's return is around the same time that John-117 and crew were fighting the covenant in jumpspace while under the effect of the Forerunner crystal?

Then that would "neatly tie up" how the Apocalypso managed to crash part of it's shipboard AI back in time. They don't have to have the crystal themselves, the effect of the crystal was Jumpspace wide.

Mazian, that reminded me of something.

When the crystal was destoyed, some was deposited in slipspace. Say that a ship in slipspace passed near or over these shards, say one Apocalypso. That might cause a crash.
