AGAIN.

What could Damsel do to help the boys?

Road trip down south to the ruins of her old house for a clue hunt?

I'm sorry... But as soon as I saw 'road trip' I automatically pictured a drunken frat boy adventure. Mayhaps with Slendy acting as some sort of Boss Hog or Dean Vernon-esque figure.... Cursed be where the mind goes after exposure to the internets.

Evan/Vince has hints, Damsel/Jessa even moreso.

Random note, probably nothing, and trout me if this is old, but I've been watching the old EverymanHYBRID videos instead of doing homework and noticed something that I'm not sure has been touched upon.

Episode 5: Upper Body and Arms takes place in Evan's basement. It very strongly resembles the basement in Welcome To The Ark and Ashen Waste, much more so than the basement seen in the rest of the series. The walls, mess, etc., match much better. It probably means absolutely nothing, but just thought I'd note it.

*finger snap* Damn. Thought I had something new, even if super inconsequential. I just remember there being a very light debate on if it was Alex or Jeff who wanders in at the very end, which made me think that it may have been thought of as Jeff's house (i.e. why would theoretical Alex [who is clearly actually Jeff] be in Evan's house).

Ah well. Was still a fun little thing for me to connect the dots on. Carry on with the Evance and Slake slash!

Hey Didz,

In the rake creepypasta, the lady doesn't remember that the Rake was talking to her husband until afterwards.

You should ask Alex if he remembers the thing talking at all.

Timely because TribeTwelve has a little THEN WHO WAS PHONE? moment in their latest video. Wink

That's true. Someone should ask Alex if he remembers it talking at all. He might of been too startled when he posted the video and right after it happened to remember.

-Quick edit- I asked him.

So, I just started watching this. I watched all the Youtube videos, beginning to current, yesterday. I have started reading this thread too but I'm only through 15 out of the 464 pages currently up, so forgive me if this has been discussed already (or if it belongs in the off-topic thread instead of here).

Anyway, is it just me, or does EMH have a metric ton of homages to other cult-classic horror, both trope-wise and in specific?

The first thing that popped into my head when I saw Slenderman in #6 was Jacob's Ladder, though of course the sped-up psycho demon head bob thing has been emulated in other bits of horror fiction as well, such as the mannequins in Silent Hill (which, itself, was borrowed from Jacob's Ladder, I believe). And am I misremembering, or does Jeff make a specific verbal allusion to Silent Hill when he is in the school? His voice is always rather quiet so I wasn't sure if that's what he was saying.

Also, the whole hiking section seemed reminiscent of The Blair Witch Project (though of course TBWP didn't create the "go through the woods, end up at abandoned shack" trope). And they didn't really get lost, either, but the aesthetic seemed very similar to me. Then again, I thought the "guy running ahead, camera guy far away in the back so he can't see" thing was also fairly reminiscent of the end of TBWP and various parts of Cloverfield as well.

Anyway, I see a lot of allusions to various other previous horror works, but maybe I'm reading too much into what I'm seeing. Am I?

Nope.

Silent Hill, Alan Wake, BioShock, Red Dead Redemption, Blair Witch, Jacob's Ladder, House of Leaves, Slender Man, The Rake, Candle Cove... EMH is definitely building a horror genre metaverse.

I don't think that all the "shakey-cam" genre movies can be included (TBWP, Cloverfield, Paranormal Activity etc.) just because they are so damned ubiquitous these days, but they have certainly made allusions to some of them.

If I were you I'd also read up on your creepypasta too, they really seem to enjoy throwing those in.

Welcome to the game!

Thanks Smile

And I forgot about the direct reference to House of Leaves. It is an interesting reference, too, because there are so many different layers and types of horror in that book, but the one scene in House of Leaves that always disturbed me the most was this:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Johnny gets into an truck or something with this woman, but Johnny gets some kind of intuitive bad feeling about her and gets out of the truck. Then she kills the dog they found, caving in its head, and throws it out the window of her vehicle.

It's an example of real, non-supernatural, incomprehensible human cruelty and it manages to actually be more horrifying than all of the semi-supernatural dimentia going on in the rest of the story. That one thing, for me, is the most disturbing aspect of House of Leaves and as EMH is still toeing the line between the supernatural and the real, I think there is real potential for some deep, multi-layered horror much like what the scene I just mentioned in House of Leaves provides to the atmosphere.

Of course, I'm not sure if (and even doubt that) they had any specific allusions to House of Leaves in mind, but that's the first scene I thought of. The whole "side of the road" trope, too, since a good percentage of video here (like 10-20%?) is on a dark road.

And as a side note, I need to get a new Xbox 360, or repair the one I have, so I can play Alan Wake.
