Seems like every other day there's a new vlog/blog coming out. And sadly, most of these aren't following the old pattern. By which I mean, in the early, pre-EMH days when every new blog that wasn't worth anything normally died out. A few crap ones hung on and were ignored, a very very sparse couple of good ones went to their completion, and that was that.

Now it's new ones all the time, almost all of them of the same quality (mediocre at best, galling at worst), all drudging along.

I have to wonder: in this environment CAN a good Slenderblog be made and accepted? Everyone talks of projects but is it possible for their to be a good Slenderblog in all this? Even if it is good, will anyone even notice it since we've got such a watershed of mulch covering the field?

You need to give the blogs time to die out. It's not like they'll give after only two videos/posts. Eventually they'll die out.... And then we'll have dozens more in their place! Wink

I'm not bothered by the huge numbers of blogs coming out, since I can usually speed read through them. My poor internet connection makes keeping up with vlogs harder, so that's kinda annoying. But what really bugs me is the trend of "hey gais, look i found found a blog thats rumrd to b abt slenderman!" Then link to a blog with only an introductory post. Them rumors have been traveling fast, huh?

True, but, I don't think it's so bad at the moment. There's a pattern that most blogs that tend to be samey end up being abandoned pretty quickly.

That's where market forces come into play. Readers don't want to read the same stories over and over, so those that play the same tune get dumped quick.

And, often, it isn't even really the "samey" story that's an issue. Take Dreams In Darkness: "Guy finds out about Slender Man, stuff starts happening, weird messages, past links to SM, goes mad". The author just took those basic beats, did something just a bit different with them, and wrote it decently.

I think it's the last two that are key. It's possible to write a good Runner or Strange Businessman story that just follows the main trail, but you gotta do something different. I don't care if it's the character (ST: Zeke Strahm) or the method (DID: Slender Man doesn't show up "in-person" until the last seven posts), do something different.

And write it decently. You don't have to be able to sell it to a publisher, but do it decently.

(Note: None of this is anything against some of the modern crop of Slender Bloggers. Even though I don't read much of them anymore, I do see some good, original works being released. Keep up that good work)

For me, at least, Slender Man has reached the "zombie movie" stage. The character is no longer interesting or scary just for being there, and I have no burning desire to see any new works based around him. I feel like I've had my fill for now, but I reserve the right to get incredibly excited if a really great new story comes along. Very Happy

This is precisely where I am now as well. I haven't been scared of Slender Man in a long time. The key for upcoming bloggers is to shatter the current perception of Mr. Thin. Do something to make your story about him compelling. New victim, new reactions to SM, new ACTIONS by SM (there are SO many things that could be done with him). Audiences want to be interested. You can't do that by pumping out yet another typical story.

EDIT: Went to post this, got hit with the "new post while writing" message, post ballooned further. Way to go wall of text. Why must brevity be a cross-class skill for me... And why did I take the Opinionated flaw?

This is why I feel differentiating is the key to getting noticed and being good. As soon as someone posts here about a Slender Man blog with a theme I've never seen before, I'm sure I'm going to leap at it. If a blog is good enough and different enough, it should instantly stand out from the lame ones.

I honestly have faith that Slender Man has tons more stories in him, people just need to unearth the hard ones and not easily retell the tales people have already found.

This. Oh my god, this. I understand people wanting to get their work to the fans as fast as possible, but come on. Slow burn it. If you must post your own work, do it after the blog is solidly established.

My theories on the whole mythos only really include EMH, TT, MH, and that blog Finding The Darkness. Those are the big ones for me that hold the most information and are pioneers and execute the whole thing really well. The new storylines are usually half-assed blogs or shitty videos.

Pretty much this. I mean, to me a Slender-man project is only good after it's been running a couple months.

I don't think there is a critical mass for these stories quite yet. I have yet to see a Slender blog told with puppets.

I have to wonder how many you've actually tried to read through.

whats up with this thread? so you're all crazy for anything slenderman related, have now had a forum dedicated to discussing him and his blogs, but you're complaining about videos and side stories that feature him? i don't get it.

and also, reading through a thread the other day discussing what everyone would like to see in a slenderman story, apparantly you want these stories to go back to the roots of the slenderman mythos. some blogs are doing this. but you still complain. frankly, you're all odd.

I now have an image in my mind of Slender Man pushing a guy in a wheelchair down the stairs. Seems like the sort of thing he'd do.

k. it just annoys me to read these posts as of late that say stuff like "ooohh there's a sound distortion! they can't do that, mh already did!!!"

visual and audio distortion, tentacles, garbage bags, paranoid bloggers... all these are generic elements crucial to the mythos. don't become outraged when they are used outside of mh. it's like watching a werewolf movie and saying "ooohh a transformation scene! they can't do that, werewolf in london already did it!!!"
