me thinks not... he still wants to get his family here, and he seems smart enough to realize that his "favors" will not be enough for aiden

I think he does/will/did go back and blow most of it on the tables or something. Otherwise he gets kneecapped etc. We know from the clip that he didn't actually cash out, right?

Kamal's use for the cash

Epic1980 wrote:

No way, he wants the cash to impress Sophia! In stretch_em, Kamal is initially reluctant to continue the game until he hears about the 30% bounty. He utters to himself "Baby needs a new pair of shoes." He is clearly thinking "Hmm, slingbacks or italian flats?" as in "slingbacks".

Unfortunately, I don't think cash is going to do it because in "slingbacks" we have:
Sofia: Mostly, Aiden makes me happy.

She likes the gangster, but doesn't mind the money that comes with him. Hard to believe that Kamal made more than Aiden does since it was Aiden who paid him. Even as a bag-man Aiden would not have sounded happy to give Kamal more than he makes.

Right. There's a reason Mr. F doesn't give Kamal a cashiers check. He has no intention of really letting Kamal walk out with a buttload of cash.

what do you want to bet that Aiden got paid, though? Good point, Arana, on the shoes bit... makes more sense than the family route I originally thought. Aiden knows how to play people... He knows Sof likes expensive gifts, and he knows Kamal likes Sof (thus the reason he had her around him), but he is a manipulator and charmer, and would never voluntarily find himself in a vulnerable place with Sof regarding Kamal's money... thus the chips. I hope this is making sense. The way I see it, Kamal is useful to Aiden, so he tolerates Kamal's romantic interest in Sof and even uses it, but make no mistake, she is HIS girl, and knows how she likes to be pampered. Kamal will never see his gifts rewarded properly while aiden is in the picture, because Aiden needs to keep control

My SPEC on the video clip in the chip is an anti-counterfeiting measure, just like the holograms on some present-day casino chips.

[spec]Regarding the casino owner not just doing a transfer into Kamal's account, I'd rather think that it's because the casino is used to launder money not because Kamal's going to get injured/iced.

The chips would be cashed in by Kamal and he'd get clean money, rather than a large sum of money from a potentially known criminal, like the casino boss. Then when Kamal get audited sometime, there won't be a money trail back to the casino boss.[/spec]

Hehehe, kinda OT, but wouldn't it be great if Kamal did get audited, and it was poor ol' George Shibura (Jersey's auditor)?

George: So, it seems that you gained a rather large sum of money during your vacation.
Kamal: I can explain it, there's a good rea--
George: If you don't mind, sir, I will be the judge of that. Now during... Hm, seems to be getting warm in this room... (Turns pale) Oh God, not again!
(Door bursts open, SWAT team storms in)
Police: Mr. Shibura, come quietly or we will use force! Where are you hiding the drugs?
George: (whimpering) Why me?
Police: Officer Helms, full cavity search!

Astute observation, but keep going.

From SO_DENSE:

Sophia: All things being equal, life is better when you're not broke.
Kamal: I was just figuring that out.

Kamal makes this statement with an odd emphasis. Upon hearing it again (even before listening to Chapter 5), it made me think that Kamal has a new goal.

Kamal is coming to the realization that perhaps the money IS Sophia's prime motivator. Only perhaps, but at least it is a possible in-roads. He's looking for a way to meet her needs, to supplant Aiden.

At least that's my take.

This does not indicate, however, whether Kamal will gamble his windfall or keep it. I was surprised that he did not cash out.

I would have to agree with you, based on the (present day) societal tendancy for women to be attracted to the rich and the famous... Razz

I am hoping that Kamal will be able to outwit Aiden's manipulation and get the girl in the end.
Getting the girl to fall in love wit you: lots of multi colored chips
knowing the ganster boyfriend can't harm you: priceless!
