I think the word is spelled "sheidel" and yes, it would be Yiddish for sh*t.

[OK, maybe i was wrong, I'm still looking for verification.]

OK, back with more info.

First, i was going on the thought that the word was linguistically related to "shite" and the German "scheisse", and in context it would seem to mean a similar explitive deleted. It also has that Yiddish/German sound to it, so I searched on a variety of spellings.

The best I could come up with is:
~ shaidel ~
{Yid} A wig that Orthodox woman use for modesty.
"I wear the sheidel because a good wife covers her head."

I want to keep digging...

sheol means hell in hebrew; but I don't know how it is pronounced, or if there if a yiddish derivitive of it. I found itt while looking thru a copy of the book of enoch
