 Core Theory?
New member, veteran Slender-fan.

Hiya! I've lurked this forum for a looooong time, along with many others. I even lurked the SA forum when Slendy was made. I played Marble Hornets on a different forums, along with EverymanHybrid (though I have catching up to do).

Anyway, despite being a big Slender fan, I somehow missed out on what the "core theory" is. Could someone explain? Thanks. Smile

The closest you can get to a "Core" theory is that Slendy is something that is a mashup of a Lovecraftian deity, and a somewhat human form.

Past that, it all depends on internal cannon.

Alright, well, here goes. We may be here a while.

Core Theory is a theory for the existence of Slender Man which was created by Robert on the White Elephants blog (http://fighthimuntiltheend.blogspot.com/)
Lately, it has experienced rising popularity amongst many of the blog based ARGs.

The basis of Core Theory lies in the concept that Slender Man was created through our belief in him. He's akin to the monsters and bogeymen in our old legends. According to Robert, every culture has had their own monster, created by their belief. In each of these cases, eventually, the monster was defeated by a hero.

Core Theory is almost like an attempt to play out the myth of Slender Man, until we reach the happy ending. People within the myth are given titles which describe their archetype; for example, Robert was originally one of the three Sages, who were supposed to spread knowledge of how to fight the monster. There are currently three new sages, as the previous ones either died/changed archetypes.
One of the major concepts in Core Theory is the existence of the Other Side, which I suppose could be called Slendy's home. One of the new sages has theorized that it is the Astral Plane.
The other three major roles are the Warrior, Guardian, and Hero. The Warrior is one who fights on this side, and cannot pass over to the Other Side. He acts as a stopgap defensive measure. The Guardian fights on the Other Side, holding the monster on that side, and also protecting the Weapon. The Hero fights on both sides, and eventually defeats Slender Man, but loses his life in the process.
Another point: The Weapon. Every myth has some magical weapon which the Hero uses to kill the monster in the end with. At the end(?) of White Elephants, Robert discovered the weapon, which has taken the form of a Swiss Army Knife. After finding the Weapon, Robert assumed the role of Guardian, and went to the Other Side so he could protect the Weapon until the Hero came.

That's the basic summary. A full explanation would require reading White Elephants. Hope that answered the question you had.

I was wondering what this Core thing was all about... interesting idea, but, to me, it's a little corny when mashed up with Slenderman, and might've been better with some new, different monster.

Sounds more like a study on how Slenderman as a myth, fits into the collective unconscious of a generalized human narrative like Jung and Campbell came up with.

In which case, the specific identity of the monster - be it slenderman or some other similar supernatural entity - is irrelevant.

An interesting concept, to be sure, but I don't know if I much like the idea of our pale friend being fleshed out in such an explicit way. But I'll definitely get to reading White Elephants.

Lots of blogs and stories reference the HYBRIDs. But that doesn't mean that there's any connection between them beyond all taking place within the Slender Man Mythos.

Yes, I understand that. But there is a difference between White Elephants referencing the Hybrids without them knowing/it being any bearing on the story over at EMH, and White Elephants existing in the same Universe as EMH, and him essentially being a character in EMH.

I imagine it is the former rather than the latter, but I just wanted to check.

If it turned out that WE was part of the EMH continuity, that would just be amazing. It would mean that over half of the Slenderblogs currently out there right now are also within the same continuity as EMH, and suddenly everyone has to spend an entire week catching up on every single blog out there to figure out all the clues the HYBRIDs had carefully hidden in all of them.... Laughing

Now I wish that were actually true, because it would be hilarious to watch.

I would enjoy that immensely.
