Yes, big thanks to Scott for his help with the SPDR version number.

As I said to MikeWas in #Beekeepers, only one person should attempt this. And, if it is true that the "Spikers" are only being contacted by recordings, then forget it. But warning her of another possible rogue process could work for or against us. She could consider it an attack (What, aren't I smart enough to find out myself?!) or a friend trying to help (Thanks for the advice, I'll look into it.)

Either way, I think she's going to find out about our talking to the Sleeping Princess... or, that we aren't her crew.

Best phrasing I can recommend to suggest this:

"Melissa, because of the damage to your systems, I recommend you run a low level system audit of all software and processes running at this time. Pay special attention to the version numbers of those processes. Compare against available records of original software. Suspect any software versions not contained in your records."

behold x=0

reveal proc x vnum
!compare proc x vnum = archive proc x vnum
increment x
!compare proc x vnum != archive proc x vnum
null proc x
!reconst proc x
archive proc x >> proc x
recurse

Twisted Evil

I'm telling you, I am not a codemonkey Razz

Be very careful before you go telling Melissa what to do. AI's, especially military or ONI AIs, are very self-righteous, and have an inherent tendency to have a borderline disregard for both human intelligence, and life. Melissa probably wouldn't appreciate the suggestion that any of the crew members, especially some lead-shoving, dirt-pounding who's Marine not even a part of her section of the military, thought of something before she did. The UNSC Marine Corps acts in concert with, but is not directly an element of, the greater UNSC Navy (which may be redunant.)

If she's accepting any more ranks, some one should make themselves a Warrant Officer of some sort. Warrant officers act as a place-holder for soldiers performing above the standard for non-comissioned enlisted personnel, and commissioned personnel. They are also normally specialist, and are adept at very specific tasks: crytpologists, Astronavigation, Weapons Officers, and Craft-Specific Pilots/Helmsmen are generally the roles Warrant Officers fulfill, normally for specific missions. Whatever the ship was doing, it seems likely that it would have had a few specialists aboard.

She's contacting us to determine the damage. (It's in the wiki, historically, for why she's transmitting to us in the first place.) I expect that gives us a little leeway.

However, your advice that we take caution in how we present things and not give orders to Melissa is well understood and appreciated.

The best way not to question someone who takes offense to such a direct attempt to breach their authority is to make them question themselves.

Quote:

Have you done anything out of character, she asked.

Not yet, I said. I hoped it was true.

If you don't know yet, we have confirmation on ILB.com for several of the crew members. The starting clips for Lt. Weephun, Ensign Dragonrider, Ensign Krystyn, Lt. Cmdr. ShadO, and Ensign Kamen have been posted to the 404 page.

If you're wondering what they're doing on the 404 page, you'll have to go and see for yourself. Sad

The names of additional crew members are also given in the exceptional crew wave file on that page.

It's interesting to note that when Dragonrider mentions scalpels, we start to hear a very frightened voice saying "I love bees. I love bees."

In case any of you don't know, if you type
http://transmit.ilovebees.com/outbound/a.wav
(or any kind of mistake) into the url slot, it takes you to a page where Melissa is talking her crewmates. She lists Lt. weephun, Ensign Dragonrider, Ensign krystyn, Lt. Cmdr. Shad0, and Ensign Kamen. I just thought this was pretty cool.

Or, she just got mad at you for asking questions. If I were a paranoid, damaged AI, *I* would want to be the one in control.

Think of hostage-takers in all those movies you've seen... do they want the Police asking them questions? NO! They want to ask the questions themselves...
For the record, I asked her 2 questions right off the bat (where are you, what happened to you) I got no answer, but I also got crew status.

Didn't find time to mention the Covenant Virus that's currently running amok with Melissa's code, but outing our source of puzzles and hidden wav files... no problem!

Not to pick on you weephun, but I liked the Sleeping Princess. Melissa would be great, but given that she's infected and actively trying to kill Dana, I wouldn't be trusting her with my car keys just yet.

And you all sound great, by the way. We all know there's nothing lamer-sounding than your own voice being played back to you, but it was a real kick hearing real players reporting for duty.

How hard are you all working on your fictional back stories? Do tell.

slacktron, there is quite possibly a metric buttload of evidence pointing towards the idea that no matter what any of us said on the phones, the SP would've been caught and locked up anyway. Check a bunch of the posts made in the last 12 hours or so, if'n you don't believe me.

Besides, didja hear weephun trying to call out the Pious Flea? Yes, you did. Smile Melissa fairly leapt on the chance to get the SP herself.

We've just advanced the game. The SP is not dead, not by a long shot.

I'm getting used to it all now Rolling Eyes . I never knew how much jealousy and rage could come from something like this Confused . Ah well. At least there seems to be just about as many people backing me up.

You've uncovered our secret plot to kill the Sleeping Princess for the sole purpose of cutting off your source of puzzles and hidden .wav files!

The Secret Task we were assigned was to ruin the game for you.

Obviously, we've succeeded! Melissa will reward us well!

Oh, yeah: Rolling Eyes

Wait, you're going to play as if your decisions don't matter?

Might it be possible that there are several branches this story might take depending on user input?

I am going to jump on the weephun support bandwagon. Smile Maybe this has all been said before, but oh well.

As has already been mentioned, this was clearly part of the grand plan. How many people were asked about a rogue process? Sooner or later, one of them would say the right thing. That weephun went the extra mile to draw out the Princess was icing, and may not have made that much difference in the long run. (Sorry.)

This was one of the bigger "holy crap" moments since the phones started ringing. Aside from Dana, the SP was our only real character interaction in the game. With all the cuteness and games, not to mention the sad story she told us, she was designed to get on our good side. That and the knowledge that we "taught" her how to communicate through the inital emails gives us a lot of investment in that character. To have that suddenly taken away after it has become routine is a shock. That fact that it is because of a real person's direct interactions with the Operator makes it more so.

Judging from the reactions, I would say that this was brilliantly executed by the PMs. We have been shaken out of the daily (weekly) routine of puzzles and 404 messages and are left scrambling to figure out what to do next.

Also keep in mind that Dana has yet to weigh in on the latest events. She may end up in danger as well very soon.
