You guys need to bone up on Navy ranks....their enlisted are seamen and various levels of petty officer; and no warrant officers in the Marines, either - just a variety of privates, corporals and sergeants.

Try this:

I'm gonna bust out of school early to catch the 8:11 PDT axon.

Do you think a rank of "Lieutenant in ONI" would go over well?

Or would i get railed with a weird question about the Office of Naval Intelligence?

I'm either trying that or going with CPO. Because Mendez was cool Wink

Thanks for that link aliendial, it's very helpful. You think she'd believe me if I told her I was an admiral? Razz

Take some vacation time. Come visit. Take a train and meet us in Union Station.

We can use the help, really.

I doubt the Apocalypso would actually have had an Admiral on it. Admirals are usually on really big ships, and then they have a bunch of other ships around them.

Does anyone know offhand if any ONI "spooks" were mentioned as being on the Apocalypso?

I know there were conversations posted on ILB after Aug 10th, i think, that involved ONI personnel.

i think i'll try that route...

But some people who melissa except gave ranks that are army ranks didn't they? If they didn't get the right branch and she didn't reject them who's to say she woudn't accept someone who's in the right branch of the military albeit a high rank?

Also her memory is damaged so she probably doesn't remember who was on her ship.

When the crew gets calls, I think at least one of them should say that they've made contact with more of the crew and tell melissa that there are still more crewmember out there trying to make contact with her (if she doesn't do the live calls again). That might get her to make a few more.

I don't know if she cares; look at all the ranks she's letting people claim. At the moment the ship is mostly officers. A few marine noncoms. I wonder who was doing the real work. Very Happy

So Navy and Marine officers and noncoms to be expected. Avoid Army and Air Force ranks. Unless you think the Haloverse space navy grew out of the AF and not the Navy. Like I said, I don't think Melissa is troubled by what we think are the right types of ranks.

Claim whatever you want, but for realism I suppose Admirals are a bit beyond the norm for this scenario. Admirals generally aren't driving ships. They're running larger and larger organizations up the chain (bases, squadrons, etc). Ship captains are usually captains/commanders, depending. (voipme and mazian will, I am sure, point out where my vague recollections depart from reality; they're knowledgeable, I used to know a little about it.)

Not inconceivable to tuck in an Admiral for a specific purpose, I suppose. But more than one Admiral would look plain silly. An admiral might set up shop on a flagship or something like that, but I didn't think the Apocalypso was on that kind of mission.

Of course, that's reality. Not sure what the Haloverse would dictate. For all I know we'd get an interesting plot twist if someone senior to Captain Greene clocked in with Melissa. Smile

Oh, good call. I've become so used to everyone worrying about getting axons that I've forgotten that we get them in advance sometime and we have to wait. Guess the plans are in no danger now (the wife will be happy to hear that).

On and Inio, I was playing with your Brain child and it's come a long way. I'm pretty impressed. Thanks for banging that out.

If I get a call, I might try it. I probably should have a back story to support the claim though eh?

Well, there was ONI Tech Kowalski, who appeared in one of Melissa's memories in the Phase 2 Operator's Monologue. When I was deciding what rank I would give Melissa if she asked me for one, I actually toyed with the idea of saying that I was with the Office of Naval Intelligence, but ultimately decided not to risk it -- particularly since I have no Haloverse knowledge whatsoever apart from what I've picked up here. Let us know how it goes if you try it.

Wait, the Apocalypso was a Navy ship? So we have to use Navy ranks?

Yeah, I don't know if anyone should attempt anthing with ONI. I mean, there's a pretty large scale conspiracy with ONI, and the Apoc. was caught in the middle... so that might not go over well with Melissa.

Well, a navy ship would have a marine detachment assigned to it, so no worries there. Because of this, navy/marine ranks are fine. As for upper ranks, while an admiral may use a ship as his flagship, he's not driving the boat, that is that captain's duty. The admiral would just be involved in the big picture stuff. But you'd think she might have records of VIPs on board, admirals usually aren't undercover.

As for myself, I thought that if asked, I'd take an enlisted position, probably naval, Warrant Officer range. Not exactly a grunt, but low enough on the totem pole that brass don't notice, but up enough so that there is some manner of freedom. (Just tried to figure out where my job would lie in relation to the Navy's way of assignments Smile )

I believe that you can still get axons that were archived early this week as failures. I got two Wednesday night myself -- 18:49 and 19:11, both in the "bang" group -- and they have both been changed from AXON CANCELLED to AXON SUCCESS.

And, if you believe that Melissa is going "live" only at the most reliable axons, well, then, you might want to reconsider deciding not to hit one if you can. Up to you, of course. YMMV. Mr. Green
