[UPDATE] UM 9/21, and hack on 9/24 = Puzzle? New update at UM. Pretty darn interesting.
Theo-Why are Dutch campers calling his name?
Dutch reader Kender writes in with the following legend:
"8 years ago a dutch boy named Theo (pronounced tay-oh in dutch) disappeared without a trace at the Lowlands music festival. Since then every year you'll find dozens of people roaming the camping and festival site at night calling out his name at the top of their lungs. The weird thing is that when asked, these people have never heard of the missing boy and cannot really explain why they are calling his name!"
He further says that there's a news story about the phenomenon here: http://frontpage.fok.nl/nieuws/45512 (in Dutch). Pretty weird!
Going Underground- Spooky Tube
UK reader Flidget writes in with the following:
"London is famous worldwide for its train network, the Underground, but what most people haven't heard about are the 'ghost stations'. These are stations that have been closed up and abandoned, but you can still glimpse their dark, deserted platforms as your train hurtles past them through the deep tunnels. Very spooky, so it's no wonder eight of those stations are rumored to be haunted. The British Museum Station has probably the most impressive ghost, that of an ancient Egyptian angry at that his tomb was violated and his mummy kidnapped back to England. Eventually the station was closed in 1933, but in 1935 two women disappeared from Holborn, the next station down the line. Strange marks were found on the walls of the empty British Museum Station and sightings of the ghost increased, but the women were never found."
Poor Flidget works near one of the haunted stations and managed to get creeped out writing this!
Fortunate Son- How many yard apes ya got?
Many people are familiar with the legends of the Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. Such men were believed to have great power including ESP, healing ability, and spellcasting. There are rumors that the wrestling families of the Harts and the Von Erichs were trying to produce seventh sons. It's said that in days of old, ship captains would lie, cheat, and steal in order to get a seventh son onboard, as this would keep the ship from sinking for whatever reason. Sinbad was supposedly one of these seventh sons. Sailors also highly prized a bit of the caul some babies were born with, which they would put into an amulet and wear around their necks. Some areas of Appalachia view the seventh daughters of seventh daughters to be the blessed ones, often attributing them with the gift of clairvoyance.
Do you come from a large family? Who among you might have the gift?

It's possible, though some of us in #uh were thinking that we probably stumbled on theseventhsons.com a little early, and this myth was supposed to be one of the clues to send us there. This spec is supported by the fact that there's nothing on the site yet - though as you suggested, it's possible that it's all hidden and just waiting to be found...

Looks Like UM has been hacked I don't think this is in-game, but it's still interesting (and in an ARG, you never know for sure):

The image is hosted here , and looks like it came from here , though again, I don't actually think any of this is in-game.

Yea you're right, I don't think this is in game. I think its a bunch of script kiddies that figured something out. If this is real, hopefully they find their arse a bit sore quickly.

Quote:
T.R., is that you? I think my site got hacked! I've got a trouble
ticket in with my host. I think they must be looking into it because
nothing web-related is accessible right now. I'm able to check my
mail, just not send it from there.
I think I walked under a ladder or broke a lot of mirrors or somthing.
I am not having good luck lately. :-\
Anyway, I thought that might be why you were sending me a test
message. Hopefully they will get things resolved soon.

Amanda/Ed reports on the recent hack:
Quote:
9/23/04 Update: I'm sure many of you noticed that this site was inaccessible for a while after having been defaced. Although the purported hackers left a calling card, I have my suspicions that it was window dressing. I'll update if I get more information.

. . that makes it sound like the hack was in-game. Maybe the stuff that was found weren't spoilers after all.
[EDIT]
Or at least, if not originally in game, I think the PMs may be deciding to incorporate it.[/EDIT]

Can I just say, I'm impressed with the mention of the Harts and Von Erichs? Someone knows their old-school sports entertainment...

I think that the hack may have been ingame. However, some of the stuff uncovered afterwards was definitely stuff we weren't supposed to know about yet. One of the pages I saw has since been taken off of UM. That's all I'm going to say about it.

I can't tell if it's in-game or not. Maybe the PMs are just trying to play it cool. What are they supposed to say? I guess they could have pretended like it didn't happen... then again, maybe Ron didn't need to talk about ARGs and link to UF. (Maybe UF is in-game!)
My point is (I hope the PMs are listening) that I can't tell if the hack was real, or part of the game. I also can't tell if what was released was intentional, or an oops. I expect Edmanda to clear it up if we should do anything with the leaked info.

Another update!

9/23/04 Update #2: Still really weird stuff going on with this site. I'm unable to send e-mail, so my apologies if you mailed me and I didn't respond. Weird files keep popping up here and there, so I'm afraid whoever hacked me still has access. I realized that I had some stuff up on my server that was private.. hopefully it didn't get too far out there. I feel like I've walked through a large group of people with my zipper down!
Sounds like they're telling us to ignore the stuff we found.

I agree with Flidget Jerome's edit. I investigated the hacked page, and there's no way it was in-game.
However, the PM's are very good (which we already knew), so they're rolling with the punch, and using it as an opportunity to heighten the paranoia.
I don't think there's any value in investigating the hackers (this isn't Lockjaw, after all). But I do applaud the PM's for dealing very well with what could have been an extremely bad situation.
In the highly unlikely event that the hack was in-game, I'm sure the PM's will give us a nudge in that direction. Unless and until that happens, I think we'd all do better to move along to other more promising lines of investigation.

*ahem*
UM has been hacked again. The main page shows this:
Quote:
I hate the long hot days
of summer. It seems to be
endless at times. And to
make it worse, it forces
me to wait for the time I
long for every year. But
at last it's here. Fall is
the season I love. All my
pals and I go every time
to see leaves. Autumnal
leaves at sunrise have
a unique beauty that is
majestic. The crisp air
holds scents of nature;
the trees explode with
color. You can sense the
great power that hides
behind the facade we've
come to call nature. I've
seen the face of what is
beyond that veil. I know
I will never be the same.
xuujuujuuhuhhn,
Ramon
So do you guys think it's in-game? Seems a little too creepy to be OOG to me.
