[OT][META] Thumper's Father

Parley?

I humbly request a return to civility. I feel like some of us are really acting quite intolerably here. When I first started following ILB, ARGN was bar-none the most mature, accepting, discussion-fostering forum I had ever seen. We're not terribly far off, but there is some rudeness creeping in.

One, there are personal attacks going on here. Reaction to weephun is problematic because he is reacted to as both an IG and OOG player, but it's clear that he has been getting a lot of flack. I'm really not talking about weephun here, but some of the posts I have read in the past couple of days are OUT OF CONTROL. Instead of a trout, someone says, "You should be banned." A person disagreed and was met with words to the effect of, "I hope to see you in hell, playing with burning excrement."

Some people are specifically out to malign other people by name, either insinuating, mud-slinging, name-calling, or even telling others to quit playing the game. Others attempt to smear their "opponent" by "rising above (this) petty little discussion." They attempt to get the last word and devalue those who would continue debate, but they betray their thinly-veiled attack by using highly charged language--speaking down to others, or calling the issue "petty," "a waste of breath," or other such demeaning verbage.

To a lesser extent, some folks have been pooh-poohing discussion by directly undermining a person's right to speak. For example, I have heard the thought repeated, "You do not have the right to voice personal distress at the game's progress." I have also read people replying to a spec, "This [SPEC] is too wild, therefore you do not have the right to discuss it." In still other places, I have heard the reply, "You do not have the right to speculate that this involves OOG Haloverse information." Folks, it seems to me that we shouldn't be telling anybody that they do not have the right to discuss something in the context of a discussion board (unless it's a personal attack or trout).

Not always, but this often seems to be a sort of cognitive dissonance response to those who imply a threat (real or imagined) against another's ability to play this game in the way he or she deems appropriate. Some have said that this game is free to play. I disagree...cognitive power, gas mileage, and time aside, we have emotional investment in what happens--it's no surprise that disagreement becomes intense. We can still be civil toward one another. vpisteve even made a fantastic post about not getting too stressed out. Some great replies were made too, but it's now degenerated to name-calling and repeating the same five things by different persons.

Maybe we need to use more "I" language than "You" language. Maybe we need to vow not to type when angry. Maybe some of us need to personally apologize to someone else. Maybe some of us would do well to re-read our own posts, putting ourselves in the "other guy's" shoes. We must embrace conflict, but we must also embrace civility.

Now, I have used some specific examples here. Lest someone think this is a personal rebuttal...don't. This isn't about who is on what side of what issue. This isn't about what he said or she said. This is about respect. This is about Thumper's father saying, "If you can't say something nice, don't say nuthin' at all." It's a thin line between disagreeing and pooh-poohing, between the person, the character, and the argument. If you feel like I have attacked you personally or said that you don't have the right to speak, then my sincere apologies. And from here, let's go back to the way things were. Remember: the power of life and death are in the tongue. pen. type. emoticon. whatever. Smile

Yep. I'm glad people have such passion, but use it to advance the game, not to anger each other.

Well, what you do is up to you (sorry Weephun), but I'd recommend not. Wink

I'll burn The flea instead then *burns the flea's text, as it travels all the way to it's source, where the flea burns in the fiery pit of hell for being a flea* ((I think we should make a humourous thread that allows us to make fun of the in game characters, such as the flea "I saw him on my dog last night", or SP "She sleeps all day and night, no wonder she got caught".))

It might be a great venting place... But according to that logic,

That might be a bad idea...

I think it's a testament to the storytelling powers of the PMs to make us feel so strongly about the characters. They may've realized or not what chaos this would cause, but they decided to go ahead anyway. So did Weephun. Why?

Storytelling. Sometimes the hero has to die for the cause. Sometimes the hero doesn't win every battle. Sometimes the hero makes a mistake.

Kudos to the PMs, but poopoo to us all for not displaying the appropiate thoughtfullness and tact. The Sleeping Princess, though I love the gal, is imaginary.

-------------------------

Speculation is a great thing, [strike]even[/stirke] ESPECIALLY if you don't agree with it. I reserve, for every pundit, the right to be able to state an opinion, especially, ESPECIALLY a well reasoned one. Either for or against a speculation.

After all, there was [url=http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=6112&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&]
this thread[/url]

Though I didn't accept the speculation, it made me seriously think about the origin of the .wavs. I applaud that. It wasn't idle speculation on Bubba Wilkins part. He present evidence and got me to question my beliefs.

Did anything pan from the sepculation? Beside proving interesting for me, it would seem not. Does that mean it was wrong? Hardly.

Anyway, I probably haven't done much to help. But, ya know, I felt like doing this because I like this community. I feel invested, ya know what I mean?

Have fun, all,
Luke P.

Yes, you are right. And I'm sure that I have not been blameless in the "typing while angry" and "saying things I shouldn't have" area. So, to any that I have offended by such things, I sincerely apologize.

I left activity in the Bungie.net forums due to the bickering and child-like nature of things there and I feel terrible that I have in any way contributed to bringing that here. Again, I'm sorry.

See you all tomorrow.

Personally, I think you all don't have the right to type what you have. So there.

Laughing

I know I'm only doing the "SPARMY" thing as a way to get more in-depth character-wise.... I'm not doing it to be "against" other players... just a way to role-play WITHIN the game... I'm all for weephun doing his thing and for the rest of the crew to play their role, and those of us in the opposing "faction" to play our role and see what happens to the story. But if anyone and I mean ANYONE really feels "superior" to another person (not a character) due to their "stance" in this whole thing... well, you're a big idiot. Pony?!

You know what? I think that's why I like that horse smiley so much... it's so open-ended that it could really emphasize anything! Wink
