[EMAIL] Asking Dana for some help

With all of the infighting going on between the beekeepers, I sent an email to Dana. I asked her if she could try to say something to help get us back on track. I thought it was a good idea at the time, and I figured I should let you guys know I sent it.

Anyway, here's my email.

Subject: Factioning of the Beekeepers

Dana,
This is the first time I've emailed you, but I think that
something needs to be done. The beekeepers, the people trying to find
out what is going on, have started to split. The 2 main groups are the
"Crew", or the people working for Melissa/the Queen/the operator, and
the "Knights," who are trying to free the Sleeping Princess. Melissa
is the first AI you met, the one who saw you on your webcam, and the
Princess is the one who tried to protect you. The Princess has been
captured by Melissa, with the help of her crew. This is the first time
a split has happened, and its not looking good. People are talking
about hoarding information, spreading misinformation, trying to
discredit each other, and it goes on. Although I haven't had a big
part in this so far, I think I've done enough to know that any split
within this tightly knit group is very bad indeed, and in the end can
help no-one.
I wrote this email to ask you to say something about this. We
can't let this group of people start fighting with each other, because
any hostile elements within your server will only benefit from it.
'Divide and conquer" is one of the oldest tricks in the book, and it is
still very effective.
I don't know what we should say, but something needs to be done to
keep this from getting any worse. We've done what we can to help you,
and now we need your help to get us back on track.

Please help,
Bobman

As a "member of the Crew" I assure you that anything that is not "mandated secret" by Melissa will be posted here. At least, anything that I personally hear/see/say/do.

Any division is part of the game. All of the crew that I have spoken to (and I'm sorry for stepping in to a spokesperson role, I'm not, they haven't asked me or approved my saying this) have made it clear that they only want to help the game along.

The truth is, I'm not entirely sure that "secret keeping" is the best way to handle anything given to us in the game. However, there is a obvious division over whether to trust Melissa and help her, or whehther to support the Princess. This division is obviously going to cause people who are opposed to one camp to SPEC and suggest things that do not support the other camp.

Ultimately, the goal is to get to the end of the game, which means that we all have to do our part, together.

And for anything that is "mandated secret" by the PMs via Melissa... It'll come out eventually. But for my part, unless I hear the magic words "Do not tell anyone," I'm going to assume that it's ok to share it here.

I was thinking that we needed an outside voice to say something about the split, someone that isn't part of either of the groups. I thought Dana was as good a person to ask as anyone.

More importantly, Dana is an *in-game* voice. With the SP gone, she's going to be the main contact most people have with in-game events.

If the PMs have something they want us to do (or not do), they'll probably suggest it through her replies.

A thought about divisions

Perhaps I shouldn't be jumping in here, and perhaps this post would be better on the thread where most of the dissension is being expressed, but I'll say this here for starters, and when I have time, I'll schlep on over there and see if they'll listen.

Personally, I feel that breaking into factions, especially when the PMs have not made the choice imperative, is a bit ridiculous at this point.

The "crew" members are simply those individuals who were lucky enough to answer the right phone, and quick-thinking enough to tell Melissa what she wanted to hear.

Take a step back a moment. Our goal here is not to save the Princess, help Melissa or anything else. Our goal here is to figure out what's going on. I respectfully disagree with the decision to keep *any* information secret, and I would suggest that that's probably not what the designers of the game intend.

*No one* here is *actually* a member of Melissa's crew, in-game *or* outside of it. In-game, the "crew" members are merely those individuals who have accidentally come in direct contact with Melissa, and then done a good job of deceiving her into believing they are crew. Which is what we *all* were doing in answering the axons. Outside the game, we're a bunch of people trying to figure out a story. Lots of minds are better than none, and the more widely the information is disseminated, the more likely it is that someone will have a random flash of insight that will unlock something. While I have faith in the intelligence of those individuals designated crew, they *were* randomly selected, which means that there's a good chance that someone else might see something in the information that the crew member might miss.

I also do not feel that sharing information that Melissa requests be kept confidential will endanger access to her. In-game, I feel safe in assuming that Melissa does not monitor these boards. I also feel safe in assuming that the PMs are not going to give out any information that they want kept secret. They have no reason to believe that the crew will not tell anyone, simply because "Melissa," who is at best unreliable and paranoid, asks them to. Their plans have to at least include the possibility of "leakage," if they don't depend on it.

That said, it remains the decision of each individual whether to share their information and ideas, and if the crew members feel that it is necessary to keep secrets to protect their access to her, so be it. I feel that it hinders our ability to play the game, but I respect their decision.

Causing further dissent by creating factions, however, is a decision to which I must object. The *last* thing we need is factions. One is enough. This is not like a chess game where we have a clearly defined opponent: we're not even really playing "against" the PMs -- they presumably *want* us to figure things out, albeit on their schedule. I think that creating factions is contrary to the structure of the game, and that if the PMs *want* factions, they'll do something to force us to choose. The way I see it, right now it's still eminently possible to continue playing both sides.

Let's keep working together unless we're *forced* apart. Please?

!behold: problem

The problem with crew members sharing information that Melissa specifically requests be kept secret isn't fear of Melissa monitoring the boards. It's the actions that would come of that knowledge. Few SP supporters here could honestly say that if they had known ahead of time what was going on, they wouldn't take certain steps to at least try to stop it. These steps, when done on such a large level, would alert Melissa to the fact that her supposed Crew may not be so loyal. Melissa doesn't need to monitor the boards - we bring the info to her.

I have personally really enjoyed watching all of this unfold for the past several months. Especially now with the drama between the SP supporters and the Crew. The Crew are only doing what they believe is best for the continuation of the game, while the SP supporters (dubbed "Knights" apparently) believe they are doing what's best for the game, since the nicest of the three entities is easily SP and it has been the most interactive thus far.

I'm not sure why so many are unwilling to accept this particular change. Things were fine when it went from simply embedded text in images to payphones ringing across the world. Nobody minded when the wav files stopped playing over the telephone and instead it was a very dimented AI speaking directly to human beings. But for some reason, when the PMs decide that having Melissa speak directly to people and our princess talking to us is too much interaction, and so finally disbands SP, people get upset.

It's all the same to me, of course, since I'm not really an active player. As has been stated before, no axons in SC. But I would like to see people come to terms with this and stop making it more complicated than it has to be. It's not like she's gone for good. This, if not so previously, is at least now the plan. So rather than bickering over whether or not information should be withheld, the supporters of SP should instead focusing on solving this new puzzle, as there are now several (I belive 5) threads dedicated to doing so.
