Fanfic: Borrowed

Dedicated to quitthecarnival, who, in one of the threads last night (I had, like, four of them open so hell if I can remember where), said:

Quote:
I'm picturing Damsel surfing the web and reading the questions on Evan's laptop. Evan is hovering behind her watching over her shoulder and annoying her with questions about what everything is and does.

---

Borrowed

One of the first things she was grabbing when they got to her apartment was her laptop. This was ridiculous. She'd spent a lot of time trying to sleep, and then when that didn't work, Evan loaned her his sketchbook and some pencils. She'd filled nearly a dozen pages over the course of the day. She was bored, and antsy, and finally asked if she could borrow his computer.

Big, big mistake. Evan, apparently, barely knew how the damn thing worked, and was sitting beside her on the couch, watching as she skimmed through the messages on her blog. "One hundred and sixty two," she muttered, shaking her head.

"How do you know?"

"It says so right here," she said, pointing to the new messages number.

"Oh."

She shook her head, and opened one of the most recent ones. It was from a regular commenter, a message about how it was good to have her back, and that it was likely many of her messages were about It eating apples. Impossible, really, but that particular question never failed to make her smile.

"What's this about Tall Dude and apples?"

She raised her eyebrows at the name. Better than invoking any of his real ones, she supposed. "A while back, someone asked me, and I quote, 'hey bro It ate my apple what do."

Evan grinned. "Oh, yeah, I remember that guy! Didn't you tell him to kill himself?"

She smirked, and turned back to the screen. "Seemed like the only reasonable advice I could give at the time."

"Heh, yeah."

He leaned back against the couch and stretched his legs out in front of him. She posted a quick reply, still marveling at the number of messages she'd received, then started a new entry to post the song she'd found.

"How'd you do that?"

She shot a sidelong glance at him. "Do what?"

"Get that video to show up there."

She shot him a sidelong glance. "I pasted the link in and used tags," she replied slowly.

There was a long pause, then, "Oh."

"I'm surprised you managed to find my blog in the first place," she commented.

Evan shrugged and grinned crookedly. "Google's not that hard."

She shook her head and posted the song. It was nice to be back. She paused, lightly tapping her fingers on the keyboard, trying to think of what she should check on next. Two months out of the loop... she was way behind on her blogs and everything. News from back home would probably be a good place to start. She'd checked a couple times a week before she went in, seeing if anything about her family had ever turned up.

"What're you looking at?"

"Are you going to sit here the whole time and ask me annoying questions?"

Evan smiled. "Maybe."

"If you want the computer back, you could just say so."

"Nah, it's fine," he said, shaking his head. "I'm really not very good with any of this stuff, anyway."

"You don't say."

"Hey, put a controller in my hands and I kick ass," he retorted, gesturing at the game console on the table. "This stuff's just hard to keep straight, y'know?"

"I guess." Her search of the town's newspaper archive didn't turn up anything of note. No fires, no missing children, no grisly scenes of trees and bags and blood...

"You okay?" Evan leaned forward, frowning in concern.

She shook her head. "Yeah. Yeah, I'm fine."

He was still staring at her, she could tell, but she refused to look back. Somehow it became a matter of principle. She quickly pulled up one of her favorite photography blogs and started skimming the entries. Mercifully, Evan didn't press the issue. She wondered if he knew about her family, if any of them had bothered to read that last post she'd left.

"Hey, what time is it?"

"Uh..." She glanced at the clock in the lower right corner. "About eleven twenty or so. Why?"

He gestured at the computer with his chin. "Can I get that back?"

Something about his tone was a little off. She nodded, avoiding his eyes, and quickly logged out of her accounts. "Here. Thanks."

"No problem." He settled it on his lap, tilting the screen, and started typing rapidly. She was pretty sure she saw a Twitter page as she stood up.

"Mind if I keep stealing your sketchbook?" she asked.

"Gonna keep drawing pictures of the big guy?" There it was again, that weird rasp, that strange chill to his voice. And even though he could have been referring to Vince or Santa or the Jolly Friggin' Green Giant, she knew exactly what he meant.

She swallowed hard. "Probably not."

"Suit yourself."

She grabbed the book and a couple pencils, then headed for the stairs. She glanced over her shoulder; Evan was typing away furiously, frowning, an occasional sneer twisting his expression. She turned, and hurried upstairs. Vince was still hanging around, she thought, and he seemed like much better company right now.

Do you have a blog or a site that you can put all of this stuff on? If not, I recommend it. This is all enjoyable to read.

I've been posting my fic (which I'm writing a hell of a lot more of than I anticipated) over here: http://community.livejournal.com/hybridfiction/. I'll probably migrate this one over during my lunch break, since the formatting is a slightly more time consuming process.

Re: rescuing damsel

Well!

That was delightful!

This is one of the happiest EMH videos I have ever watched. Not because it's good; because it fails wholeheartedly on so many simultaneous levels that my heart just jumps for joy.

First of all, you bet your ass that was filmed in a school, and there is literally nothing more lazy than that. You know what the most recent vlog to use a school as its setting was? "The Slender Nation, the ARG". And they at least admitted that their school was a school. Marble Hornets is renting a hotel room, and EMH decides to take that lovely step down from filming in their bedrooms to filming at their school. Just beautiful. Love it.

And to anyone who thinks this move is "badass", consider the amount of fucked you would be if you tried any such thing in real life. If you broke into an asylum, you would be considered a dumb ass, and the only thing bad would be your jail time.

I cannot fucking WAIT for the next entry. I may actually subscribe to their channel just so I can know when it comes out so I can have another day filled with this much laughter and run on sentences. However they try to wiggle out of this impossible plothole is going to be a glorious train-wreck to watch.

By the way, I don't even know why this series has a section here, or on any other Slender Man discussion board at this point. Haven't they pretty much definitively proven that they are no longer a Slendervlog? What they're also not is quality entertainment. This dickwad bunch of *EDIT: very nice people* has no fucking clue what being true to the story means, or staying in character, or prewriting the plot. And at this point, I really don't think they give a flying shit about their fans.

Fortunately, I am not their fan, and as such, I am loving this. So. Much.

Hi Jon. Glad you copied and pasted your exact same response from the Slender Nation thread on to here. Classy.

I had to come out of Lurkdom to post about this. Hi.

They didn't just jump the shark, the vaulted over it and pissed on the shark on the way down.

Seriously, that was the biggest joke of a video I've seen... well, ever.

I mean, of course the guys are in on the joke -- why else would they be giggling throughout the entire break-out? I mean, that's the normal reaction of young people who are breaking someone out of a facility, being chased by security, while being under the constant stress of being pursued/attacked/assaulted by at least 2 supernatural beings, right?

EMH has become a joke. But guess what? The joke's on us.

They're not even trying anymore. Why put in any effort when the absolute minimum gets them just as much attention?

Hmm... three posts, all one after another, bitching about the latest entry. Sockpuppetry, much?

If you don't like the video/series, fine, whatever, that's your opinion and you have every right to it. But why, exactly, do you feel the need to come and bitch at the fans about it? You're not going to change our minds through your sarcasm and whining. All you want is attention. Well, congratu-fucking-lations, you've got it, asshole. Now GTFO.

God, I know I'm feeding the troll, but... I just don't get people who feel the need to rain on other people's parades. We're having fun over here! What's so wrong with that?

Fun was banned by the Y SO SRS Act of 2009, which passed the House and Senate with large majorities and was signed into law quickly.

You know, you'd think that as someone with a poli sci degree, I'd have heard about that.

WAIT. I got that degree because it interested me, not because I wanted to make money! I think I may have violated the law!

brb running from the feds

Seriously, though, this is something I've never understood. Disliking something? I get. Making snide comments to your friends who share your opinions about disliking something? I get. Going over to the people who like the thing you dislike and being an asshole and telling them they suck for having an opinion different than yours? I don't understand. Clearly I would have made a terrible bully. ::shrugs::

Ooooh, speaking of Evan, this seems like a good time to deploy the gif G.I.R. made from his look at the camera at the end of "Alex." The raised eyebrows of "this shit is so ridiculous, srsly" seem appropriate.

Sadly, I am at work, or I would do it myself.
