In America, the news rarely checks its sources or does any real research into what they are reporting about. So hoaxes and misinformation runs rampant.

a lot of news stations have a tipline, and some let you submit your own news to the website. you call/post with a human interest story, and if it's amusing or strange or heartwarming enough, it gets picked up.

Timing's also important. If several major stories are breaking the paper or news station won't bother running with unsourced fake-sounding stories because they don't need to - they've got all the content they need. If it's a slow news day they're more likely to just run whatever you give them for the sake of filling column inches/screen time.

Sorry for the double post.

I updated my "clean" EMH notes with a new section in which I try to list the major active mysteries/plots. Here's what I have so far; let me know what I've missed.

Quote:

- Slenderman: who/what is it? Why is it after the EMH crew? What does it want, and can it be stopped?
- The Rake: who/what is it? Why is it after Alex? Who is it working with?
- HABIT: who/what is it? Why is it running these trials? Who is it working with? (See below, "HABIT or a Rabbit?")
- Corenthal's Children: Who were they, and what happened to them? Any connection to the modern-day group? What demons haunted them?
- The Good Doctor: What happened to Dr. Corenthal? Can we trust any of his letters/reports?
- The Damsel: Who is she? What is her association with Slenderman?
- Jessalyn: What happened to her? Was she taken by someone, and if so, who?
- The Hidden Videos: Why can't the guys see them? And what will happen when they finally do?

Go hang out on any of the cryptid foums. They are full of local news stories of stuff like this, though usually not as clearly filmed. Of course for every post like this there's 50 people screaming that it's real, and 50 more screaming that it's a dog with mange. (or a bear, or a raccoon, or a possum...)
