[FILM] Solved! How old is Kevin Flynn?

There was some discussion a while back about the age of Flynn as experienced from within the computer. During the movie tonight, Flynn mentioned that the "portal" back to the real world would be open for a millisecond, or "about eight hours." So as soon as I got home I did a quick calculation:

1000 milliseconds * 60 seconds * 60 minutes * 8 hours =
28,800,000 milliseconds

Thus, if you take any time unit in the real world and multiply it by 28,800,000 (or 28.8 million) you will find the equivalent time as experienced in the computer.

Thus, 21 years (1989 to 2010) in the real world is the equivalent of 604,800,000 years old. (Give or take, lol!)

Just thought I would share!

I'm really not trying to be argumentative here, although I was expecting someone to post something like this. I was sort of aware that the official word on Flynn's age is far less than I posted...I seem to recall something like:

1 year in the real world = 1000 years in the computer.

However, if you go by the words uttered by Kevin Flynn himself, I does seem that using a multiplier of 28.8 million is really the only logical conclusion. (Again, give or take.)

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Juuuuust trying to point out - a movie line spoils it, cant quote verbatim, but the 1 year to 50 sounds more accurate when comparing hours to days. Still, just that number is staggering if you consider virtual imprisonment

Disney made the point of saying that it was 1000 years subjective.

My calculations about a year ago led me to conclude it to have been ~63 million years.

So, yea. 1000 years ::shrugs:: It's not really a big deal, honestly

Sorry for the spoiler...I will be more aware in the future.

Broklynite....whatever Disney says (1000 years or whatever) it seems your 63 million is actually much closer to the mark!

I guess I just love the idea of Flynn being many millions of years old, and I love that it mathematically fits with the 1 millisecond = 8 hours thing (which is, after all, in the movie itself, rather than an "official statement" by Disney).

I thought I heard something far less dramatic than that, but maybe I mis-heard... will need to listen more carefully for it next time.

1000 what?

For what my $0.02 is worth, I'm reasonably certain that what he said was not "millisecond" but "millicycle."

I agree. Definitely a millicycle.

What I don't think is in doubt is that Kevin has experienced time far beyond a normal human life. It seems to reflect in him as well, which makes the scene most everyone has seen now of Kevin and Sam reunited make a little more sense.

Before we get into the whole "Been alive too long" thing (Or wherever it goes)... Can we slow the roll for those of us waiting for the IMAX?

Ok, this is what I heard as well... I thought there was another point where a comparison was made, something like 5 minutes to an hour or something. Will have to listen for it again.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
He was talking about when he, Tron and Clu built the new grid and he was spending so much time there that "minutes would be hours" but did not specify how many minutes or how many hours

I am still of the opinion that 63 million was an absolute bare minimum, but wadyagonnado?

You know, if it makes you folks feel better, resolving the original movie with this- think about it like this. The original movie took place on a computer network which was the size of a building. This one took place on a computer the size of a desk. Assume that the desk model, while advanced, maybe isn't quite so powerful, so maybe the time scales between the two grids are different. If we assume that Flynn's computer is less powerful, maybe its digital world runs slower, I dunno.

Okay, so I am willing to concede millicycle rather than millisecond. In that case, I have no idea of how much time he experienced in the computer. I'm going to the Thursday midnight showing, so I'm going to be paying close attention to that part. (And to everything else...I freakin' LOVE this film!)

So maybe the "Solved" in the title of this post was premature.

Sorry for the confusion I caused...but seriously, thanks for the correction!

its was directly stated (i think in the comic book or on helloflynn) that the computer world is 1000 times faster than the real world. also in comparing how long the portal would be open, it is about 8 hours. thats 8 hours of computer time, not real time. so the portal, although its open for some 8 hours, is only open for about 30 seconds in real life.
