Molnar had the right solve idea, but he's appeared to have spaced out. Given enough room to breathe, though, I'm sure you'll get the right answer.

I know what you're trying to say (It's the first thing I noticed about the text.), But that doesn't help me with those last 7 words. and only under certain circumstances for that big one in the middle

7 letters, not words. Total letters encoded in the note:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
15
The "hugs and kisses" part does not encode anything.

Guess I'll have to wait with catherwood, for Molinar as I'm on a different frequency, obviously.

Sorry, I'm knee deep in the Logica hunt right now.

Rogi, you seem to be too concerned on counting what you can see.

Gotcha.
I see what needs done and know it's the right way to go as Romulus gave me the first word via PM. But the remainder is too tedious to do, this late. I'll run it through a database, tomorrow.
Finally got a few minutes to play with it.
Step 1:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Convert spaces between words to dots and dashes.

Step 2:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Figure out where the letter spaces go in the compressed Morse to determine letters, and words.

Final:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
friendsxenemies

This is the second to last step of the puzzle, but I feel like it's a bit needlessly complex. I'm going to go ahead and post the solve in spoilers here so that you can point in the right direction for future puzzles.

Step 1:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
MORSE from the bacon cipher in the hugs and kisses portion of the note is meant to give a clue that there is another layer to the puzzle.

Step 2:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Using single spaces as dots and double spaces as dashes, you get the phrase FRIENDS X ENEMIES. This is where the connections get a bit iffy.

Step 3:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
There are 3 people that the narrator has admitted to loving: his wife and two children. There are 2 men that he admitted to hating: the men who killed them. Granted, you may also consider the hermit someone he hates, but that didn't occur to me until way after posting the puzzle. This gives you 3 x 2 from the FRIENDS x ENEMIES, which gives you 6.

Final Step:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

This was intended (since the person who--in the puzzle--encoded the note could only have meant for the number to point to the note itself) to point to the 6th word of the note, namely "forgive." This was the intended answer to the puzzle and the answer to the narrator's question in life--how to find peace.

In hindsight, I can see that I made it a bit needlessly complex and made a few tenuous connections, but I feel that the answer would have been reached eventually had I made the encoding of the
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
morse code
a bit clearer. That was my first time encoding anything like that, so I didn't realize that I should have denoted spaces and the like. I'm disappointed that I failed to make it clear enough to be plausibly solvable, because I felt that the final concept (
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
using the word "forgive" in the note itself to be the answer to his life's question and the puzzle itself
) was a cool idea and one that would have been nice had it worked.

No tips/suggestions? Nothing? I want to start working on a new puzzle so I don't suck at making them when I have kids!

And "HI", to you, distilled.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
"HIUNFICTION" in the reverse encoding of the following TTY implementations:
Elliott 405
EMI 2400
BSI
Pegasus Mercury
Pegasus Flexo UC (Letters)
5-bit Code (1 and 2)
