Registering domain under false identity Hi there.
I'm working on a project that will require quite a few websites. Of course, it would do me no good if all of them displayed my actual information. I'd like to register them under false identities, so that any WhoIs checks or the like will lead to actual clues and not water the atmosphere down. What's the best way to go about this?
Keep in mind that I am only one person - while I am putting together a small team for this project, most of the financial predicaments, such as registering websites, are left up to me.
Thank you.

I would strongly urge you to consider shelling out a few extra bucks with each domain registration to spring for the "private registration" option provided by many registrars, where they conceal your account information behind a proxy service. A few bucks ahead of time can save you a great deal of hassle and money down the road if the authorities come knocking on your door for fraudulently registering domains with false information. You might also leave yourself open to domain dispute troubles if you cannot prove you are the actual owner of a site name.

Ah, I didn't think about that. Thanks, I'll probably end up doing that instead.

Some hosts, like the one I use, will do this for free.

I still put false information all the time, but under select circumstances I will use the DomainsByProxy service.
Putting false information is theoretically against the site Terms of Service, but I have yet to be called out on that.

Well, if it's a free website you want, I don't see where it matters what you put for your information, you can make up whatever identity you want to use. A domain search will just pull up the info for the free site, not your little section of it.
If you are wanting a paid web host with your own domain, some of them will give you the free option to keep your information private on a whois search. The host that I use does this for free.
If you are wanting a free site for flash stuff, you could try Wix.com. You can also check out one called Weebly.com, they offer free hosting with no ads, and if you already have a domain you want hosted, they will host it free, with no ads.
Check here for a list of free hosts without ads
Or just do a google for free webhosting without ads, and you'll get a bunch to pick from.

Since this thread was bumped, I just want to reiterate that this is not merely a terms of service issue but (in the US at least) there is legislation in place requiring ICANN-administered domains to be registered with true and correct contact information. Since the change, I am unwilling to expose myself to potential liability by acting in contravention of the law but feel free to make your own choices.

from what I understand, i think in Canada you're name is considered private and is automatically concealed by the host provider by law (it's been a few months since i registered one, but I'm pretty sure that was the case). So if you have a Canadian on your team...

Hmmm... spend $3 for extra privacy, or get your website ganked? :)
