You know, I didn't put the two together. My interpretation works too, wonder which they intended: I assumed Flynn already had his plan in place, and that just was a segue to setting up the later situation with Quorra.

oh, I thought that was already clear that it was Boxleitner doing any voice/thought work for Rinzler. He probably was doing the modem sound, too.

ah, I see your point. Yes, the rubbery CG faces were the low point of the movie.

Ok, let me clear up all queries for you people.
Rinzler is clearly a 'derezzed' version of Tron.
The change in name was nessecary so the creator would continue to think he was dead.
He was such a good fighter, clu couldn't just let him be another pawn in his army, so he made him his personal drone, just able to think more freely than those derezzed and placed into his army.
Rinzler even wears the same costume as Tron, the only difference is the colour, but his original white is restored when he falls into the data stream after an ariel fight for the last light jet with clu.

"Derezzed" isnt the proper term for Rinzler...that would mean Tron was destroyed...Tron was re-purposed just like the soldiers in Clu's army.

As a side note, when Clu is about to kill Flynn in front of the portal, Clu pulls the disc in his hand back (Quorra's disc) and smashes it into the ground. It is almost the same shot as in the flashback when Clu appears to kill Tron...I'm assuming instead of killing Tron with the disc (they never show the disc come into contact with Tron), Clu just smashed the disc into the ground (off camera) and took Tron somewhere to be re-purposed.
