[OT] Tron Legacy at the box office

"Based on predictions by box-office analysts, Tron Legacy was expected to take in $48.5 million at the box office on its opening weekend.[59] It grossed $18 million domestically on the first day, reaching an estimated $43.6 millions by the end of the weekend, making it #1 on the box office during its opening weekend, above Yogi Bear and How Do You Know.[3]"

From the wikipedia article on TL. Overall, I think it did really well on opening weekend. Considering the original film didn't get much advertising and didn't meet box office expectations, it's a refreshing change to see the sequel really take on the competition like it did. And I'm glad a film that thinks outside the box is getting the recognition it deserves.

It's got some work to do if it's gonna break even. Much as I loved the film I have a horrible feeling we're gonna be waiting another 28 years for a third...

UK opening was poor, under 2 million. But IMAX is looking booked solid, so hopefully the weather was to blame.

i dont know if anyone else has mentioned this yet but i view the film as a "segway film" for the franchise just as the most recent star trek was for that franchise. the only difference is instead of setting up an alternate universe, tron sets up a new universe in the same timeline. in both cases, however the films' purpose is to set up future stories

If the segway means abandoning much of the canon the way Star Trek did, in favor of cheap and easy thrills, I think I'll take a pass. I'm turning into such a JJ hater.

I think if they really want to make this a good franchise they're going to have to go a little less distopian/not blow up the place/not turn off the computer. Make it a world you figure you can plug into as well as make it absolutely gorgeous.

I'm also worried a bit by the box office sales, it is on par for most nerdy franchise starters but it didn't even recoup a third of the money spent on it. But the weather has been absolutely oppressive in a lot of places so I'm hoping maybe once the roads thaw out more people will go.

Well in addition to seeing the Monday Chicago IMAX Norelco screening, I've personally spent over $100 on IMAX tickets for myself and family so I think I've done my part. I'll probably hit it again before it leaves theaters but I think four times in one week is good enough for now. Just really hope the BluRay is packed when it hits next summer. Cannot WAIT to purchase this thing when it comes out!
