It Started As One, New ARG?
what do you think it is about?

Now what am I talking about you asked, well I just found this odd site that, I believe, being a new ARG.

Anyway, this is how I found the site. I was going through the interwebs and just going through junk in general. I was bored on 4chan and clicked an image because someone said it had something "important" in it. So I clicked it, and nothing. I sighed, but I didn't give up too easily. I did the ctrl+U function and found the usual coding and a link. I was fixated on that link for a moment and decided to copy and paste it. (I don't have the image on me, forgot to save it before it 404'd...) This is what it lead me to...

The site: http://itstartedwithone.com/

When you reach the site, you get a bland black background with white text stating: "it started as one..." with a date corresponding below. (Jan. 1, 2011) Now nothing special really, expect the date, until you open the source code. (ctrl+U while hovering over the page.)

You get the usual code for the site, but there is one small message inside the code.

Code:
<!-- If you expected to find anything here, I'm sorry to disappoint you. Come back January 1, 2011. -->

Now I get really gitty on this kind of thing and I was wondering what you guys thought about it. Will you be F5ing the heck out of the site during Jan. 1, or just shrug it off?

While searching through the code a little bit more, I found an email that could, or could not, give you some information on this ARG.

This is the email:

Code:
 helpus@itstartedwithone.com (at it startedwithone.com)

I have yet to have a reply, but I will tell you guys if I get anything...

Now whatever the case, it's only an ARG, don't make it into something real and commit suicide if it turns out to be an end of the world thing. You will most likely have to solve puzzles with others during this time, but who knows, you might need to have your own abilities.

So what do you think of it?

Tl;Dr version: ARG are games that are IRL. New ARG "It Started As One" is shown. Codes aboves show small bits of information on the ARG. Don't kill yourself, it's only a game. Feedback?

P.S. I also found it on the wikipedia page on ARG after going through the coding.

Sent 'em an email (to helpus(at)itstartedwithone.com), we'll see what happens on New Year's.

PS: You can probably delete your preamble. No need to explain the genre to the hangout of its progenitors :)

Yeah, I was being lazy and just copy and paste the preamble and the main thing together. I'll do that in a minute.

I sent an email. I also did a whois and the information is almost useless. A google search yielded so many different websites, you can't make heads nor tails.

The page is being tracked by google analytics, a tool for tracking visits, page views, pages per visit, bounce rates and average time on site etc. I can't find too much else.

I guess we'll just have to wait till a return on emails or the 1st.

I have a theory, a very bad one though. The title and words "helpus" seem to have a vague connection. Maybe the thing that is going to begin, shall begin with one person starting, or helping it. Perhaps we're suppose to stop "the one" or maybe we're suppose to "help" the one. I don't know... we're going to have to wait for a reply, or for the 1st for this to begin to unravel.

I'm new to ARGs but isn't WHOIS somewhat behind the curtain?
I'm not sure it's gonna be an arg, though.

The guy behind the website is an 18 years old programmer who's also started a tile rpg game (mystikrpg.com -- obviously from the same guy, vide itstartedwithone.mystikrpg.com; he's got some other projects as well)...

Anyway, if you look at his last post, he mentions a "secret website" which he could finish "right now, but there are other parts that are out of my control".
Looks like a programmer hobbie project. Somewhat dependant on the social aspect.

His last question on stackoverflow includes this snippet:
Code:
var url="riddle.php?answer=" + yourAnsw
xmlHttp.open("GET", url, true)

It could be an ARG. But he expects 500+ simultaneous users... Sounds like a lot for an indie arg. Maybe he thinks it'll go viral.

(I'm writing this post as I'm researching.. Sorry if it's not that clear. I have changed my mind a few times)
I had not noticed the comment where he says the riddle.php will check for a single constant value. That's too simple for an app. Maybe it really is an arg.

Gah, I don't know.
Let's wait.

Or..

Searching for mystikrpg leads us to Dan's youtube user UrbanTwitch. Wich leads us to Dan's Twitter user and full name (Dan Jasnowski).
He recently tweeted about a 4-characters domain name for his project. Given the site, the hoster and the date, we get:

http://estf.net/

I really think it's an ARG now. It's not ready, but the way Dan has been spreading links about it is not cool.
Look at this tweet trying to go viral: http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:t3TqRga1dnoJ:twitter.com/UrbanTwitch/status/9001254181150720 (I can't link it -- I think it's too big?).

I won't go any further as this is surely behind the curtain.
Be prepared for some anagrams, though.

Alright, now I can get some sleep.

/edit: Full name and URL's where one could get personal info removed per user's request -ndemeter
Edit: Info re-added because goddammit, I already said "no!," Dan, but mainly because the request was ridiculous and this is valuable meta-info for future potential players of yours. -SpaceBass

EDIT: I'm reading over my post and I feel like I made myself sound like the guy.... FML.... I'm not, but it's odd after reading this information.

CouldntRegister, WHOIS stuff CAN be behind the curtain, but it's sometimes not and is therefore good to check. Your discussion of mystikrpg, though, almost certainly is. While I'm glad to see that someone has actually put thought and preparation into this, could you spoiler it for people who don't want to know?

Although most of the people following this game are probably aware of this, it's worth noting in the thread proper for those who are stumbling across it late -- game's over, PM has abandoned the project.

Wow, seriously, exploded in the hangar before takeoff? That was fast.
