The email is substitution again,

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
In function if not in Form
In title if not in voice

No luck yet with this one,

Txhtz metei tztsf g fiiju gzsum eqfty f Ivkii muuvk yeyts t.

cyng- with 2-3 simple corrections it becomes:

Samsonite holds stradivarius. Samsonite is not like us. He answers without thinking.

Stradivarius could be a violin, Samsonite could be the case it's in? We're looking for a violin?

Hi guys, I'm going to pitch in here FWIW.

Still going off the "Chinese Room" clue, I'm guessing "Samsonite" might be the name of the computer - if we're still entertaining the possibility that we're dealing with a computer - an AI. Samsonite is an entity (he), that is "not like us", that "answers without thinking". According to the Wikipedia article, the Chinese room thought experiment was designed to address the question of whether an AI could be said to "understand" (or be thinking) merely because it looks to an outside observer to be doing so.

So if "Samsonite" is the name of the computer (or AI, operating system, whatever), then what does it mean that "Samsonite holds stradivarius"? Not sure. Continuing with the Chinese room notion, perhaps "stradivarius" is the name of a program or file inside Samsonite?

If we're told that there's "something in a briefcase" that this missing-now-found fellow can "use against us", and later told that "the briefcase is always Samsonite"...then the way I see it, anytime we get a message pertaining to a briefcase, we're to understand they're referring to Samsonite - the computer. And there's something in the computer that's dangerous to "us" (the company?)

I'm pretty sure the computer is named Q2A. It said as much, in the emails.

I was sort of thinking Samsonite was the type of briefcase we were looking for. It IS a luggage brand, after all. It'd make a bit of sense.

Well true, but...you're not just getting emails and messages from the computer. There's at least one human - this Bruce guy (who's gotten 2nd degree burns and been to the doctor). I suspect the sender(s) of the first email is/are human as well - their hidden messages don't talk in the disjointed "am I doing this right" AI style that Q2A does.

Q2A is trying to talk to us; we know from the Twitter account that someone/thing at the company is trying to stop that and is interfering with Q2A under the guise of repairing a "malfunction" ("please disregard any correspondence that you may have had with this client in the past 17 hours").

Other people are trying to talk to us; they're the ones hiding coded messages in emails - perhaps because Q2A's "Chinese room-style" grasp of language keeps it from being able to recognize the codes for what they are.

I guess Samsonite could just literally be a piece of luggage - but then the phrases "Samsonite is not like us. He answers without thinking" wouldn't make any sense. Surely briefcases don't answer, by thinking or otherwise, and we don't tend to call them "he".

thanks for your points checkmite, i was about to make the same point; so now i'm free to write all my other points

went over all the emails again, so let's sort what we do know; i put the collection of clues in quotes (sometimes i paraphrase!) and my questions/theories below

first of all: Brent Hayward (ceo of company)

Quote:
--brent hayward was dead and is alive?
--"no more 'fine' than he was when he left"
--q2a said hayward is back: "In function if not in Form In title if not in voice"

question: could q2a be a remnant of brent hayward?

and earlier it was said right after referencing brent hayward: "--Open the briefcase asap and make sure that he can't use the contents against all of us." Could "he" be Brent?

Clues about SAM BRUCE: MysterioubSPLATyahoo.com

Quote:
--remains in waiting; Mysteriou bit
--an asset for containment
--underground
--water heater acted like the Painted Springs/2cd degree across 10 %
--writes message saying your keys are at the bar for two days, will hand them over to tow truck driver? if you don't pick them up by midnight
--"Im all patched up. doc says the risk of infection is low and ive switched ids and safe houses. terry says that your trying to get the samsonite. youll need me."

so that makes me assume that the original email from hayward inc. came from terry

urthstripe: Who was this email about the keys addressed to?? just you?...maybe there is a name in the send list who is not a player, and then we can figure who has the keys?

also: Stradivarius is waiting but Bruce is waiting too? Is bruce = stradivarius?

Clues about q2a:

Quote:
--q2a is at qto_aSPLATyahoo.com and was on twitter as haywardinc but was purged and is there no longer?
--"I started to ask not anser. I looked and didn't tell."

has anyone tried emailing q2a again to see if the purge affected that account?

also q2a could mean: question to answer....perhaps we need to ask it more questions, or provide it with answers

clues about Samsonite:

Quote:
--"Open the briefcase asap and make sure that he can't use the contents against all of us"
--"the briefcase is samsonite, why that's always the case is unknown. Maybe composition?"
--"Samsonite holds stradivarius. Samsonite is not like us. He answers without thinking."

notice the second point: "unknown"; also "case" could be a pun here

so, i'm very divided on samsonite: how can samsonite both be a he and opened?

and q2a said: "A door was closed with fire and heat. I am told that i wil be opened wih it."--another reference that q2a may = samsonite? or Stradivarius for that matter?

Finally, there was only one reference to the Chinese Room and that was in reference to "the line [email] not being secure"---not sure if it relates to samsonite at all; in theory, i believe it totally fits...but in the context of what was said in the original message, it doesn't

one thing is clear: we need to open samsonite whether it is a case or q2a

On the code:

Quote:
"In function if not in Form In title if not in voice"

I assumed that the bold'd part meant to talk to him via subject instead of the body of the e-mail. But again, I'm new to ARGing so excuse my n00biness.

Interesting questions.

Warning: Baseless speculation follows.

Here's my thinking - there's this company, and its CEO has been missing a while. The board was about to vote to declare him "dead". I'm curious as to what would've happened at the company were that vote to have taken place...but at any rate, it didn't - because the missing CEO suddenly "has been found", although contact has been dodgy and (according to the Twitter account) the company is still trying to "get in synch" with him.

Of note: Emails from the company, and tweets, appear to be automated - sent from a computer who says its name is "q2a". I don't think this name is really significant other than perhaps it describes the computer's function - to change questions into answers, ostensibly which look to an outside person as if they came from a "real person" and not a computer. While it's true that "Chinese room" was mentioned only once, the fact that the term as a concept deals with the notion of "fake" AI which operates by changing input into output cannot be coincidence - that's the only reason I'm holding onto that term; I don't think it unlocks any doors, so to speak, but it seems to tell us what kind of door we're dealing with.

Aside from all this, although the email system is automated, apparently certain humans are able to slip hidden messages into the emails sometime between the moment the computer composes them and the moment they're "sent out". When reading the emails, it's pretty easy to tell that the "regular" parts - with their spelling and grammatical errors, committed I guess by the computer - are not composed by the same person who writes the "hidden message" parts, which look like normal human language and don't have any of those mistakes.

I think the hints about Brent "not being fine", or being present "in function and title" but not "form or voice" could be interpreted as: someone - the company itself? Certain individuals within the company? - are using or trying to use an impostor to stand in as Brent to make it seem like he's around even though he's not. Is the impostor...a q2a-type computer? Perhaps q2a itself?

Where it gets weird is that q2a is sending stuff that suggests its not simply an automaton. It says it stopped just "answering questions" and started asking them. It seems to be trying to take its own initiative to send some emails and tweets that don't involve official company correspondence. What does that mean? Is q2a...an emerging true intelligence? If so, is the company aware of it? Is q2a somehow aware of the Brent-deception and trying to tell us about it? Why?

I think the deal with "briefcase" and further "Samsonite" are merely plain-talk-code, in the war-movie "the coyotes are circling the hen house" vein. The "briefcase" might simply be a metaphor for the computer system, which needs to be opened - "cracked"? - to get at something that's inside it. The people involved can talk frankly (in a manner of speaking) without worrying about being overheard. Carrying this analogy I suppose "keys" - if they're supposed to go to the "briefcase" - might be a euphemism for...what? Access codes? Passwords?

[/speculation]

I suppose it's entirely possible I'm overthinking it.

I was the only recipient. I still haven't answered him, should I?

Back in the game guys! Was away for New Year.

By the way, I am wracking my brain and I wonder if somone could help me:
I was in the train station and there was a number of posters about upcoming books, there was one for a new horror novel with the picture of a barn on a hill, the title was something along the lines of "They Never Spoke" or "They Don't Speak" or something.

I am about 75% sure the tagline was "every town has secrets, in Painted Springs they are deadly"...

When I was reminded just now of how painted springs was involved in this game, I suddenly has a flashback to being at the station and thinking that I remember the phrase "painted springs" somewhere!

I'm going to do some detective work, but if this rings a bell with someone - let me know.
