[Wild SPEC] J-Squared possibly Chief Mendez?

I've been lurking around the forums since the beginning of this thing, and almost everything I've thought has been posted. But doing a quick search, I didn't find this one...

Could J-Squared be our lost Chief Mendez, gone to train the next batch of SPARTAN-II's? Right now I don't have a lot to base this on, but looking at the axon transcripts today, the comments that James makes in merry-go-round and then his quick subject change at the end indicate to me a further knowledge of the program than just as a member of a precursor project.

I've not tried to disprove this yet, so I'll gladly take a heaping pile of trout if its deserved.

Good spec, although I'm not sure about it.

In the latest batch of wavs, JJ says that he shot some guy who was in his backyard, presumably someone who was there to take Jan away to become a Spartan 2.0. He then ran away with her to another town, going into hiding so they wouldn't take her. Not really likely to happen if he's the one training the kids.

It's possible, but it doesn't really seem to fit in with what we know. His knowledge of the S2 program seems to come from 'a tech' he knows, although obviously that could be a lie. The spec is possible, but I think it needs a lot more evidence. (As do most specs, I suppose Smile )

Good point. I missed or read-over that one. I'll admit it was thin, but wouldn't a father lie to a daughter if he did something that he felt might make her think he was a monster? Just a thought.

How could he have been on Earth raising Jan if he was supposed to be training the new batch SII's wherever it is they're training now? And wouldn't Mendez be a little old? He has to have at least 25 years on MC which would put him at around 60(math is not my strong point and I can never really remember exactly how old MC is, sorry). I don't think JJ is quite 60.

Another thing to consider is James' attitude towards the SPARTAN IIs. He always speaks of the project and the soldiers that came out of it with fear and revulsion, regarding the SPARTAN IIs as inhuman killing machines. This hardly seems like the attitude that the Navy would have wanted for the SPARTAN's trainer. Heck, Mendez goes as far as to personally commend Master Chief as being the best soldier he has had the honor of training (paraphrasing).

I figure James' knowledge came from a biased account of the project from a technician assigned to it. The fact that he probably had a child of his own by then further colored his attitude towards the SPARTAN II project.

I think it's safe to say, though, that Jan was on the list for kids for either the second batch of Spartan IIs or maybe even the Spartan III project. Her dad saw this, and made it hard for the UNSC to get ahold of her.

Wouldn't Kamal's sister be about the same age as Jan were she still around? (Obviously, she could be a Spartan who is still the same age as Jan, but you get what I'm saying.)

Since Jan has memories of her childhood which are apparently correct, I think that kills the Jan = Yasmine theory.

OT, but, about Kamal's sister.... In the "Fall of Reach" book, it was stated that those chosen for the SPARTAN II program were taken away as children and were replaced with flash clones. Now, cloning has yet to be perfected(in the book), so, eventually the clones die at an usually young age for any number of reasons. Now, it would be reasonable to speculate that Kamal's sister was replaced, at some point, by a flash clone, and that's why she died at such a young age. Maybe she is/was a SPARTAN? Maybe she's one of the few surviving SPARTANS at the end of First Strike? These things we must ponder. Shocked

One of the things that keep sticking out in my mind in the kamal thread is how he keeps describing his sisters predicament after the crash. She couldn't speak, or even remember any of the places she'd visit. That would mesh in easily with the idea of a flash clone, who probably wouldn't have any memories or even the basic knowledge of how to talk.

I would put out that she wasnt taken as for the Spartan II program but for a new AI program. One that, like the Spartan program, takes young children and molds them to thier needs, physicaly and mentaly to become a new generation of AI.

I agree with that, it seems the most likey thing that happened to her. She was a very smart kid, the kind you would think would be used for an AI from what we heard kamal say of her. The Spartans seems to need more of the action hero type like Jan. Smile

Now that brings up the old spec, is SP kamals sister? In fridays contact page she does talk about her brother shortly. And Kamals story seems the most unrelated of them all up to this point other then the dead sister/genetic disease part of it. Or maybe Melissa , or Durga is his sister? Maybe they all are parts of the same whole Who knows.

No, the Spartan II program is far more likely because the existence of an AI program isn't even remotely solid. Aside, AIs are likely as advanced as they'll ever be in Halo. If scientists wanted a more docile AI from someone's mind, they could just alter the Cognitive Impression Model.

EDIT> Then again, maybe she's not part of a program. Maybe she's just a special case where they gave her a flash brain and used the real one for an AI.

Another vote she is a Spartan

Another fact that supports that Kamal's sister was taken to be a Spartan II. In the something_i_carry.wav Kamal says that she was 6 when she died, and in merry_go_round J^2 says that age 6 is when the 2.0s are taken.

Sorry if someone else has already made this connection

This has probably been mentioned before but I can't find it in searches:
Further evidence(?) that Kamal's sister is Melissa (whether that includes SP and Durga, who knows).

From http://ilb.extrasonic.com/index.php/Phase_3_Memories
Melissa wrote:

Bars and triangle, dots and squares. A little like Braille, a little like cuneiform. Felt the old familiar hunger: new language like a new cuisine - delicacies of thought and nuance for me to dig into.

And from http://qube.netninja.com/beewiki/EvenMoreNewAxons. Actual wave file (3rd axon set)
Kamal wrote:
She loves languages! She taught herself - God, I haven't thought about this in years - she made Dad read bedtime story every night, and then she would pretend to go to sleep, listening to a chatter channel hotwired to some other language!

This could just be a coincidence, especially given the fact that AI's can probably learn languages quickly, but having an old familiar hunger for it ... that statement seems suspicious. It would be another personality trait that they share.
