IMDb Spoiler confusion?

Hi. I'm Cathy. I know nothing about ARGs. My only experience comes from reading this board in confusion when the weird "Cloverfield" trailer showed before "Transformers." Since I saw "Transformers" six times in the theater, I finally got curious enough to look it up, and found unFiction.

The reason I'm here is the following, from IMDb:

This movie is about a scientific research gone wrong. 8 college students sign up for experimental research. The research changes there DNA allowing them to accumulate powers like mind control, strength, pyrokenisis, telepathic abilities and so on. The military finds out about the experimental program and pays a large sum of money to the scientist for the rights to continue the research and weaponize them. The scientist had stopped the research because they knew what it could be used for. But money corrupted them. The only way to contain the students who's powers were still increasing from the experiments was to cool there bodies to a point low enough to keep them alive but to stop brain function. They sent them by train because it would be a fast way of travel while insuring that they would be contained. Unfortunately something went wrong with the train and it crashed. The freezer they were in stopped functioning allowing them to escape...They hide out and attempt to learn how to control there powers. What they don't yet know is that the military has created super soldiers from the same research they purchased. There mission is to hunt down the college students codenamed as "Super 8" and kill them before the experiment goes public.

In further posts, the writer "fxsaberboy" says that his father is a set designer working on "Super 8" and told him that this was the plot of the movie as far as he knew.

I found out from reading up that there was an ARG for "Super 8" and went through all the information here and at wikibruce.com. I've also run a search here at unFiction. I've tried "spoilers," "fxsaberboy," variations on the words in the post, and nothing came up.

I don't pretend to know much about ARGs, and while wikibruce.com was very helpful, I'm not sure I know much about the "Super 8" ARG, but I think you guys might know better if this has some measure of legitimacy to it, or if it's in conflict with the ARG, and therefore unlikely.

It's too bad this ARG started back early last year. I'd have loved to join in on it, even though I don't know smack about ARGs. Rolling Eyes

Thanks,
Cathy

That dude lied, hard! The stuff in this forum is true, don't trust IMDB.

Yes, Cathy, it's always a wise policy to take any plot/spoiler information about films in production posted to IMDB with a giant grain of salt and a heaping helping of skepticism.

Since IMDB is largely based on user-submitted content, sometimes people are just plain inaccurate while other less scrupulous people deliberately post false "spoilers" just to draw attention to themselves. Or just to be jerks.

Also, if this 'kid' truly learned this from his father who was a "set designer" on SUPER 8, then if his spoiler is accurate then he just got his dad fired and/or in big trouble with the studio. All cast/crew members would be obligated to maintain non-disclosure of movie details, and few biz professionals are stupid enough to throw their career away by leaking true spoilers through anyone, especially their kid.

While we don't know the true plot details of SUPER 8 (deliberately so), it's a safe bet this spoiler author is a crank. Just like the recently 'revealed' design of the SUPER 8 monster, which was quickly proven not authentic at all.

Meanwhile, welcome to uF and the ARG!

Thanks both of you for your replies. Is it still possible to be involved in the ARG, even at this late a date? I don't know that I could contribute much, given that everyone else seems to have figured everything out so far, but I would love to join in the fun. I'm especially interested in this one because of the confusion and interest raised by "Cloverfield."

But back on topic, JJ Abrams seems to keep his cards close to the chest, which is what surprised me about "fxsaberboy" and his so-called revelation. Although as far as plots go, the one he put forward was a lot more realistic than some of the fake plot spoilers for "Cloverfield." That was why I had trouble determining if it was legitimate or not.

It didn't seem to fit with the ARG, but then again I have never played one, so I wasn't sure if maybe I'd been missing something. I like going to IMDb for information on some of my favorite old black-and-white films, but as far as games go, I think I'll stick to this forum. Very Happy

Cathy;

Welcome to the forum. Some months back on another Super 8 info site, someone posted claiming that they were directly involved with Super 8.

What was his name? Dick, Rick, Vick, or some such name that he called himself, made some outlandish claims about the plot and was so full of hot air he could have flown a balloon. This guy was a loon, and it wouldn't surprise me if the imdb poster was the same person.

Long story short--don't believe it! Go on over to rocketpoppeteers.com and join! You'll be probably be sent an email with a link that suggests that "they want to get to know you better." Click the link, take the survey (20 ?s and two 10 word (or less) questions) and you'll no doubt be sent through snail mail a certificate that will assign you a fleet in Cap't Coop's organization, and be patient--the game should be ramping up soon!

Oh please...

Someone doesn't know what history is, or the whole point of having an old fashioned film camera in the very trailer... as in Super 8 film. Ya know, the Kodak stuff. That's the company with the classical red lettering on the film. Just like in the trailer.

Yeah.

Moving on...

Yay! I have joined the unForum and am now going to be involved in the ARG!

So, is it just me, or is the ARG a bit stalled? Is this typical? (ARG virgin here.)

I noticed on www.hooklineandminker.com that people had responded to the first few posts Mr. Minker put up. Were those IG or were they players? Would Josh respond to players putting up info on his web page?

I'm done ranting and will now be heading off to get myself in the Rocket Poppetters.

The game has been stuck in second gear for like 9 months now. Don't worry, I think you haven't missed much. I think all of the previous stuff was very experimental. Like, craigslist listings taken down. Obviously not an integral part of the ARG. You can tell by how the chat conversations downplay that the listings we saw had no importance, but rather this canister does. So don't worry, you've come at a great time!

So I did something stupid...
cue me hiding under a rock in shame

I'm a terrible person and I did something dumb, to which I own up and will hide under my rock of shame.

On a lark, I borrowed a friend's name and email posted a reply to the www.hooklikeandminker.com blog, just to see if the Protagonist might reply.

(It didn't occur to me until after the fact that maybe that kind of thing was frowned upon in an ARG, though I didn't see anything like that in the rules - if I missed something somewhere about it, please let me know, so I can bone up.)

But I noticed something odd, and I'm wondering if it's at all helpful or is purely unnecessary information:

I posted as Amy Bright on the last blog post, December 6. I'm in Texas, and at the time of posting it was 10:39 pm CST. However, the blog is saying I posted at 4:39 am.

So, is the blog somewhere six hours ahead of CST (that's 5 hours ahead of EST)? Or is it an error on the blog page? Is that of any use to anyone? Or have I found a non-clue and simply cluttered up the board with unnecessary junk?

Either way, I'll be under the rock of shame. ::hides::

You are probably just seeing a default to GMT. That would work out to about what you are citing. Doubt it means anything.

As for 'rules' in an ARG - that's purely up to who's running it. The only thing that really constrains players from this end is the law (don't hack stuff that isn't presented to you to 'hack'), and the forum rules about how you post. As long as you aren't the puppetmaster (PM) or posting as an in game (IG) character, you're pretty much fine.
