For what it's worth; on the night of February 24, 1942, unidentified aircraft panicked Los Angeles's military defenses into initiating a sustained anti-aircraft barrage for about an hour at what turned out to be nothing. The incident was called "the Battle of Los Angeles". Decades later, UFO enthusiasts would claim the military was "really" firing at alien spaceships.

Might explain one inspiration source for the movie; also why a member of MUFON would be interested in the movie.
