Eldritch Existentialism

I had mentioned in chat (IRC #stfeline) earlier this week that I was feeling a need to sum up the current state of things in the EE world, a tugging at my mind to reflect on what brought us here at the beginning, and an urge to ponder our next steps. I wasn't looking for closure, yet, but I wanted to start the discussion of whether our time in limbo has an end in sight.

I started to post, then backed off, then jotted down my thoughts, then stored my notes away. When dante started a new thread called "ambition and fracture in ARGs" over in the General Meta Discussion area, I thought that was a sign that I wasn't the only one feeling unrest.

So it turned out that his thread wasn't about Eldritch Errors, but it did make me want to return to my question about the state of things for us over here in Ephemeral. (there sure are a lot of E's in this post)

Are we ready for closure? Are we ready to spark some new story on our own? Are we forever waiting for someone else to do all that hard work of building a narrative for us to play with?

I pondered what might happen if I created a new account on the Outpost and began to post as a new Sentry. What would I want to accomplish? I have to be honest, an evil side of me considered taking it to full hoax levels, luring people into believing that the game was starting up again, with a real puppetmaster behind the scenes, and then waiting for a peak emotional moment to reveal the hoax. What would it take to successfully pull off such a stunt? And whom was I lashing out at to even consider doing something so hurtful?

Before I can decide for myself whether or not to continue with a new chapter in the EE world, I wanted to look back on what drew me into it in the first place. And that might take me some more time and another post to write out properly. In the meantime, I would love to know what others here might be thinking...

I'm thinking that, had you decided to follow-through on your diversion, you would have seen it through to a logical conclusion and done it in a way that would not have had folks all up in your grill. I kinda lost interest in/mutual respect for EE, but I have been thinking about it more since Marble Hornets moved-in, next door, forcing me to at least see EE in my MH post-clearing activity.

Dante's post was a welcome validation that maybe I'm not the only one having those kind of thoughts and feelings.

You rang?

While it is true that my meta thread wasn't really intended to be about EE, I'm glad that it at least raised some thoughts in others about the status of EE and what it all means. Here are my thoughts:

EE is dead.

Kaput. Done. Finished. Gonzo. Dead like Stu in pickle juice.

It is a shame, really. I think that the PMs (and they know who they are....) deserve some genuine credit for attempting something very ambitious (see my meta thread) and original (not an existing IP) and completely out-of-the box. Kudos for that. Honestly! While it was active, EE was enjoyed and obsessed over by a very dedicated cohort of players in the best ARG tradition. It had three-dimensional characters (poor Howard), creative plotting and suspenseful events, high levels of interactivity, and overall was very successful (time dulls the memories of occasional misfires and complaints, not to mention the Everlasting Interlude of No Game and No Explanation).

However, it feels to me like its time has passed. If the PMs (and they know who they are...) were to pick it up, dust it off and resurrect it, my bet is that it would not be successful. It would certainly have to be different, and operate under a different set of 'rules.' Most of the players have moved on, in one way or another -- and from what I can tell, I suspect that the PMs (and they know who they are...) have moved on as well. I, for one, would be extremely interested if the "bible" of the game were made available at this point to the players (just for closure's - and curiosity's - sake), but otherwise I think it's appropriate to send it off to that big Archive in the sky...

Although Halloween *is* coming up...

Oh how I miss the experiences I had in this crazy world... It is indeed sad to see it gone as long as it has been with no actual ending that so many of us would have desired... Oh well... One can only hope that something just as magnificent and interactive can happen one day again as well... I for one know that I never got nearly as involved in anything like this afterwards because I was afraid I'd see this happen again and be so heartbroken when it never actually reached it's conclusion... Oh well... Time will tell what might happen and if another one of these will ever capture my heart in the same way as EE did...
